Island of Baseball is the untold story of black baseball in Cuba and its role in helping to bring about the end of baseball segregation in the United States The film explores the special relationship between baseball in Cuba and baseball in the United States and the central role of black Americans and Afro-Cubans in that history. This captivating exchange included American Negro Leaguers, major leaguers and Cubans of every race. It provides a narrative of VITAL cultural importance and insights into the complexities of race in both Cuba and the United States in the first half of the 20th century and the crucial role Cuba played in breaking the color barrier in major league baseball, one of the most important early successes of the civil rights movement.
