Alizarin was a project that I did in the early 90's with Annie Smidt.

One of my oldest friends and sister, Annie needs help covering some of her out-of-pocket treatments from her recent cancer diagnosis.

Her needs are, thankfully, not as huge as they could be, but still very important to relieve much of the stress of 'f**k, what now?'.

Her needs are, thankfully, not as huge as they could be, but still very important to relieve much of the stress of 'f**k, what now?'.

Many of you do not know the elusive genius that is Annie, but I would not be who I am today without her. Since the late 80's, she has inspired, instructed, and taken care of me when I was a spastic, random, feral weirdo trying to find my voice and place in the world.

Her magazine, Tear Down The Sky, included much needed articles like the evolution of Simon Gallup's beautiful hairstyles, she was responsible for bringing bands like Cindytalk and Breathless (I am pretty sure) to the US, and we explored early musings in sound with bands like Alizarin and her overlooked and carefully hidden brilliance as Wineredglasseye.

Avid devotees of local band such as Think Tree and all things involving Scott and Val, she also turned me on to King Ink and his merry band of Bad Seeds.

Printed in brown and bronze on sturdy off-white card stock, kept perfectly flat since their original printing, these posters were found hiding in a flat box in the office.

2023 HOLIDAY MYSTERY BOX FUNDRAISER
VIDEO ARCHIVING PROJECT

A big project for next year is to professionally digitize all the video footage in the archives; VHS, Beta, Hi-8, DV, etc... dating back to the mid-80's.

This project will cost quite a lot, but will be worth it. It will preserve many hours of treasures long lost to time. The archive includes early performances and footage of Drekka, lovesliescrushing, Low, Static Films, The Stuffings, Turn Pale and many other Bluesanct artists and friends.

To kickstart this project, I have decided to try to raise some funds to send off the first batch to be transferred.

I thought a fun way to fundraise would be to curate some mystery selections of releases and items you may not have heard before, including many rare items.

Let the mystery unfold before your eyes or send one to a friend as a gift!

This, the debut release from the newly christened project, is perfect for the series... Michael J. Tapscott and Isaac Edwards have been part of the Bluesanct family for over 20 years; always close to my heart and on the speakers at the office.

Pacific Walker finds the Odawas duo, Michael Tapscott and Isaac Edwards, once again weaving their mysteries into an esoteric tapestry of mycelial folk borne under cosmic whispers.

Joining forces with percussionist and classical guitarist Raphi Gottesman, the trio embark on their first journey, an initiation stretching from the furthest outer reaches of Creation to the innermost Temple of the Eye Am.

Channeling scorched church spaghetti westerns, warped tapes transmitted from abandoned spaceships, the murmured seances of a watery grave, our three stoned apes can be found strumming barely tuned nylon guitars beneath a monolith of blaspheming synths, their midnight hymns inviting you to the table.

Drekka is Icelandic for "to drink" or "to imbibe"... to take into oneself, to drink sound.

A reflection of the sounds around, filtered in the mind, embellished with memories and visions, distorted, deconstructed, transmuted, and retransmitted.

To grieve is not to wallow and weep... it is to step inside and think and remember and smile... and perhaps still weep.

TODAY marks the 25th anniversary of DREKKA's debut album release!

Released the day of my friend Phil Perry's funeral, the first copy is buried with him. Phil was one of the earliest supporters of my initial attempts towards making music, always honest and constructive when I was failing and always encouraging when I was making progress.

Today, I am unsure how I feel. I have created a body of work from this project which I think Phil would have been very proud of.

Yet, during the 25 years since its release, music and art has been both marginalized and commodified to the point of almost total devaluation. The world is moving ever more quickly towards the inevitable chaos that plague and disorder brings. Lack of touring and community engagement has begun numbing me mentally to an almost stand still.

Still, I am extremely proud of it and of the path life has taken me; oblique and opaque as it has been, I am reminded that the important thing is the work.

I wish I could have shared this evening with Phil - and Kirstin Grieve, for that matter - listening and talking the hours away.

Stay safe, keep your loved ones close, and take every opportunity to tell them how much they mean to you.
