Heidi Hightower of Missouri and Rainer Fuller Moore of Illinois are representing Southern Illinois University in the all-women Air Race Classic which began today. More than 50 teams flying a wide variety of aircraft will travel 2,610 miles from Carbondale, Illinois to Loveland, Colorado in the 47th annual race. Teams will stop in Moberly, Missouri late Wednesday or early Thursday depending on weather. Both Heidi and Rainer are certified flight instructors at SIU. Heidi is the daughter of Rod Hightower who was among a group of Stearman formation pilots featured in the Fall 2021 issue of Show-Me Missouri.

The year was 1998. Titanic became the highest-grossing film of all time and picked up an Oscar on the way. Seventy-seven-year-old Senator John Glenn, the first American to orbit the earth, returned to orbit in the space shuttle Discovery. The federal debt reached a record $3.8 trillion. And the first issue of a magazine featuring Missouri travel destinations rolled off the press.
