Don’t call the new “Candyman” film a sequel.

A reboot?

A remake?

Not in the least bit — try again.

I spoke with director Nia DaCosta:

"We said, ‘OK, we’re going to take this ‘Candyman’ legend and make it work for us a little bit more.’ ”

Over time, I've spoken with folks who are members of Chicago's R&B scene, and they have thoughts on the state of the genre.

Some believe there's more access than ever, while others would love to hear more songs about love/courting instead of s*x.

STORY: https://chicago.suntimes.com/2021/8/9/22594840/chicago-r-b-music-dcase-matt-josh-r-kelly-jeremih-lauren-staples-bj-hathaway-love

The artists within Chicago’s R&B scene believe things are moving in a positive direction, and more exposure the better for independent creatives, while others prefer to hear "more singing" and "less rap."

The holes in the walls in the exhibit spaces at the South Side Community Art Center tell the story of a venue that continues to withstand the test of time.

Those holes are the remnants of the artwork of Black creatives over an 80-year span.

The Bronzeville-based venue is a longtime space for Black creatives to showcase their work when other spaces overtly and covertly told them no.
