Featuring the technical wizardry (well - by 1970s’ standards) of musicians Ed Schülder-Niesentow, Berndt Autbilden, Hans Zanitheiser and Willi Rimstinger and co-produced by the esoteric and mystifying Carsen Jenek, the album “Schaltungsarbeit” was recorded at their Klink Klunk studios in the summer of 1974. The album disappeared without a trace, followed by the band.

We’ve reproduced the only article written about Abmass to serve as a biography. Taken from the September 1974 edition of “Serialism Today”, here’s Working The Circuits.

Abmass were formed from the ashes of Der Kliniker, an experimental music collective on the fringes of the Berlin music scene in the late 1960s. A relocation and changing of line-ups resulted in the inception of Abmass.

Their debut album, “Schaltungsarbeit”, recorded with custom-built instruments and released in 1974, garnered little interest from the record buying public due to a lack of support from their record label, and as such were overshadowed by their peers such as Kraftwerk, who released the seminal album “Autobahn” in the same month.

Abmass would disappear without a trace and become lost in music history.

INVTR Records are proud to be re-releasing Abmass’ “Schaltungsarbeit” for the first time.
