Studio visit with ‘s Tariqa Waters yesterday….just what we needed as antidote to the coldest day in August, FFS!

Seeing her work in installation is one powerful experience. And yet seeing pieces isolated and on their own, in a window, in a stairwell, creates another layer of appreciation not only for the object itself and the care given to its realization, but for the immense associations of histories, cultures, and experiences from a seemingly simple accessory.

We are so pleased to share that we’ve hit the first milestone of 100 pre-sales toward our goal of 500 copies sold to move this book forward. The first wave of early adopters have done their part 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 🔥❤️🔥! Will you do yours? Link in bio.

We are absolutely gutted to learn of the passing of Charles R. Cross, a legend of music writing and the Seattle scene, a colleague and comrade.

Charles answered the call always, and as recently as two weeks ago as we were working through texts for .peterson.photographer ‘s forthcoming exhibition. We discussed his writing deadlines, and he promised he’d be at our opening.

Endless Love Buzz for you, Charles—you are so deeply missed by so many. Condolences & hugs to Ashland and Charles’ wide circle of family, colleagues & friends. 💔💔💔

There’s been a LOT of talk about the conference this week….some of it had us a little heated. So we were THRILLED to learn yesterday that was presenting there, talking about the process of making and publishing her lauded 2020 monograph Performance Review.

Endia’s book launched for pre-sales in March 2020, quite possibly the most difficult month, globally, of the last decade. And yet, she was undeterred—we proceeded and achieved 500 pre-sales ahead of the deadline.

This book and the art within it highlights the experiences of Black women in corporate America. We believe it should be required reading for everyone. Congratulations on all you’ve done to educate companies and individuals on best practices. So proud to have published your first book!

And 🙏🏾 to all those intrepid co-publishers who made sure this book exists, it wouldn’t without you!

Michelle here, sharing Pride vibes this last Sunday in June 🌈💚 🌈.

About 25 years ago (24? 26? around there) I participated in my first Pride March in NYC. I am so grateful to my friend, writer & activist Ephen Glenn Colter, who assisted Aperture in launching a book that sweltering Sunday. I wish I was a better photographer! Yet I am grateful to have these snapshots as pieces of what was an important day for me.

In our years at Bard together (and since!) Ephen has educated me about many things, including the significance of the March. Even earlier today I referenced “the parade”, and Ephen gently corrected me, without criticism, and with clarity. Thank you my friend for continuing to teach, and for all I’ve learned from you.

Much has changed for the better in the last two+ decades. And there is still much more to do to achieve equal rights, and full protection. So we march on, in so many different ways. ❤️

Fulfilling a commitment made to our co-publishers over a year ago. 🔥❤️🔥

With the help of the , we obtained and researched (no small feat, thank you Anakin Saephanh for taking on this task) a list of districts and K-12 schools in the US still using Native mascots.

We then chose 100 of them across the continent to receive ‘s Every Object Has A Ritual, with the invitation to read, reflect, and retain the book in their school libraries.

Those books are going to arrive right around July 4. The universe has determined this timing, and it seems perfectly appropriate.

Thank you to Selena Kearney for her powerful project, and to everyone who took part in making this object. We look forward to how it will speak to these new viewers.

Please join us and at next Saturday, June 15th, for a conversation going “Behind The Binding” on HERE I AM! 11 am-1 pm

We are thrilled to be celebrating the 10th anniversary of this timeless book’s publication in Lisa’s hometown. The discussion will include Lisa’s take on photography, time, trust & relationships, as well as how the book came to be, and the international journeys it has traveled over the last decade as hiphop’s significance is further solidified in our cultural consciousness.

NOTE: please join the waiting list if it says sold out! : ) Free registration, link in bio

Installation views of ‘s exhibition at .

Really hoping writers from to to and every considered publication in between take the time to think about the important choice of this exhibition at this institution at this moment.

Really hoping every museum that is in the midst of repatriating objects to their rightful communities consider hanging Selena’s works in their place, showing a Native perspective on objects created & consumed by settler America.

Some days we turn the pages of this book in reverie. Some days in contemplation.

Some days, in need, we search a grid or two, and wonder if the days when our heart is hurting most might be reflected back to us through this constructed, incomplete calendar?

Some days they are.

Thank you for your courage in sharing your grief with the world through Mourning. ❤️ We are so glad to have published this book with you, and through the engagement of all the co-publishers who took part in its existence.

This is a book that asks to be held. Experience it at , or visit April 25-28 at the Park Ave Armory in NYC. If you are not in NY or Seattle & wish to see it, let us know. A robust group of librarians chose this title and we can point you toward an accessible a geographic location.

Michelle here.

Last day of March. The end of women’s herstory month (and the continuation of our contributions). My pop’s birthday once upon his lifetime, and ‘s born day (hbd Adrian!).

Celebrating with two books, of course.

The first is a find from . I love Barbara Morgan’s work, and didn’t have this book from the year before I was born. It’s so elegant and timeless, beautiful printing (Sid Rapaport!), everything I aspire to in our books—that 50 years from now, when I am gone, they will feel fresh. what I truly loved was this title page, an amazing woman noting up front that she edited and designed this publication of her own photographs. I don’t have that, yet, that whatever-it-is to put in print all I do on/with/for our books. But seeing her acknowledging herself made me so glad. Took me one step closer to acknowledging myself. Thanks Barbara….

And then I spent some time with Adrian’s recently-released first monograph Sugarcane & Lightning, which he’ll be signing Sunday, April 28 in NYC at . I love its warm paper, its cloth spine, its rich colors and the sheen of the gold insert. worked with us to produce a beautiful book of his powerful writing and photographs. Thanks, SYL!

Books are such gifts when we give ourselves the time to encounter them. A lovely, liminal experience doing so this eve as one month, one season becomes another.

Thanks to everyone who joined us this evening for the official release of Mourning by , with a beautiful introduction by .

Unfortunately this book never loses its relevance, as loss continues to change us. And, we love having an experience through the book that connects us with others who are also grieving & in pain.

Tonight we had a heartfelt conversation on art, books, design, editing, grief, healing, and the power of collaboration & supportive communities. Teachers, students, gallerists, friends & colleagues were present (many of whom were also co-publishers), with a solid contingent representing!

Huge thanks to , especially Craig, Lizzie, and .martin_ for hosting Minor Matters and our authors. 🙏🏾❤️
