Newburgh Restoration A blog dedicated to the revitalization of the City of Newburgh. It is written by Cher Vick who is an urban planning student at Hunter College in NYC.

Newburgh Restoration is a blog that began in December 2008 after being inspired by Newburgh blogger, Anna Dorfman who writes Door Sixteen. The site averages 14,000 visits per month. The objective of this blog is to be at the forefront of the Newburgh renaissance and encourage the revitalization of the city. I do this by encouraging economic development, new businesses, rehabilitation of houses (va

cant and occupied), home ownership, resident interviews, and the Newburgh arts scene. Newburgh Restoration has been the source of media contact for The New York Times, Chronogram Magazine, Preservation Magazine, The NY Social Diary, Al Jazeera, This Old House, HGTV and more. This coverage has resulted in new development: home purchases and restoration, new businesses, and an urban design study by Columbia University. This blog does not cover topics that deal with politics, religion, or anything else that might be considered controversial.

Wellness Shines On Newburgh Eric Jarmann & Co. GRIT WORKS

Before & After ~ Surviving a Devastating Fire. Before photo by Eric Jarmann.

This lovely house in Newburgh, NY, experienced a major fire that largely destroyed the second story and portions of the roof, caused by an overheated power strip. The first story rooms, with wonderful historic woodwork and other finishes, suffered water damage as well. Fortunately, the owners opted to restore and rebuild as it was. Work is still underway, but the exterior is largely completed. I've passed by several times during construction and have been impressed with the quality of the workmanship. I took the "after" photo this past Sunday.

According to John Foreman of the Big Old Houses blog, the house started as a wood-framed Italianate style house (now the center portion of the long side). A Shingle Style addition was first built on the left side, and the original house was refaced in stone and shingle. A short time later, the right side addition was built with its prominent stone chimney and tower.

More about the house, including historic and pre-fire contemporary photos, can be found at: http://bigoldhouses.blogspot.com/2014/05/the-fixer-uppers-dream.html

All aspects of home restoration, including electrical updates and safety, are covered in "Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners."

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available directly from the author at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/ and in the shop on this page.

It is also available in bookstores nationwide and from online retailers.
