On January 7, Altadena's historic Black community was devastated by a ferocious windstorm and fires from Eaton Canyon, displacing hundreds of multi-generational families. With winds reaching 100 mph, over 100,000 residents evacuated, leaving behind homes and a legacy built over decades of resilience.
Altadena, once a symbol of progress for Black homeownership after decades of redlining, is now grappling with the loss of its community roots. Elders tragically lost their lives protecting homes, while families like the Callums and the Lewis clan face the daunting task of rebuilding. Among the destruction were landmarks like the Altadena Fountain of Life Church, a community cornerstone.
