FRIEDER NAKE (Germany)

Frieder Nake (1938, Stuttgart) is a mathematician, computer scientist, and pioneer of computer art.
He studied mathematics at the University of Stuttgart, where he earned his diploma and doctoral degrees (in probability theory).
He produced his first works in 1963 and participated in one of the first exhibitions of computer art at Galerie Wendelin Niedlich in Stuttgart in 1965. His early work was influenced by Max Bense's concept of Information Aesthetics.
Nake's main work phases are identified by collections of programs called compArt ER56 (1963-1965), Walk-through-raster (1966), Matrix multiplication (1967/1968), and Generative aesthetics I (1968/1969). He declared not to continue producing computer art in 1971 when he published a note under the title, There should be no computer art in the Bulletin of the Computer Arts Society. His reasons were mainly of political origin: He did not see how he could actively contribute to computer art and, at the same time, be a political activist against capitalism.
In 1999, he co-founded with Susanne Grabowski and Matthias Krauß the project compArt: a space for computer art (later compArt: Centre of Excellence Digital Art), a large online database dedicated to early digital art.
Nake has been a professor of interactive computer graphics at the Department of Computer Science at Bremen since 1972. He taught and was a visiting professor in Europe, North America, South America and Asia.

Di Luciano and Pizzo met in 1956 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and were married in 1959. The group was characterized by artistic research based on logical and mathematical principles that ultimately aimed to unite art, architecture and industrial design. Immediately afterwards, di Luciano and Pizzo founded the group Operativo R (1963-1968), which included Franco di Vito and Carlo Carchietti. AUTOPSIA

Autopsia (Greek: to see with your own eyes) in its very name contains a new protocol of work in art. It is based on two axioms: that every previous culture is a co**se; and that it is permissible to take any part from a co**se and place it in context with all other elements, regardless of the laws of production in art and culture.

It is a depersonalized art project and is remarkably active today. It began in the late 1970s, first in London, then in the centres of the former Yugoslavia, and since 1990 in Prague. It is an artistic, not just a music project. However, it has a rich discography and is esteemed among connoisseurs of industrial
music.

Autopsia was the first in the CEE region to single out a sample, the basic unit of post-production material, which in combination with other samples produces music only from samples, without any
original material.

Autopsia says that its theme is death, the method of repetition, and its speech impersonal. For Autopsia, art is no longer a process that produces objects but emits information through particular serial,
programmed rhythms.

Autopsia uses iconographic visual representations, takes them from the mass media, enlarges, multiplies, brings them into a relationship with the symbols that man encounters every day.
