Episode 161 of Tundra Talk is up!
I've said it before, and I’ll say it again...a heavy arrow will flat out perform better on game than a light one, and kinetic energy doesn’t apply...
In recent weeks, I’ve talked about building arrows that pe*****te better. You’ve seen me mention both how having a heavier arrow and selecting the right broadhead can dramatically increase your pe*******on and lethal performance on game. But I believe that some of the reasoning and physics behin...
It was a huge privilege to have such an in-depth discussion on the process of shooting a traditional bow with Tom Clum Sr of Rocky Mountain Specialty Gear and Andy Kohlhofer of Selway Archery. I feel that anyone from a veteran trad Bowhunters to a novice can benefit tremendously from this information. The past few days have been life changing for me. Enjoy!

Not gonna “church it up”...for my first time participating in this hunt...it was both about what I told myself to expect, but worse than I could possibly fathom. All-in-all, it wasn’t any epic hunting experience but it was more fun than not, And my brother-in-law and I got some much needed meat for the winter.
Keep your head down and your powder dry!!
After locating moose our first morning, we had as good of a day as you can have without getting a shot. We saw a huge bull, and had 2 other bulls coming to our calls, but darkness beat them to us. Our spirits were high, but it was as if a switch was flipped and activity went to zero, and despite our best efforts over the next several days, we couldn't turn a single bull up. It's incredibly discouraging to have that happen, but that's reality. Sometimes you get that big bull or ram, but sometimes you don't. If it were a guarantee, we wouldn't be out there.
If you haven’t heard of these arrows yet, you will. Had the chance to tune up a set of Day Six Gear 300’s and have yet to see a more consistent spined or easily tuned arrow...if I can keep them in a dinner plate at 52 with the recurve, you know they are flying well...
Moose season for Alaskans is like deer season for many folks down south. It's that honored time we take to the woods to fill our freezers for the long winter ahead. I was blessed to share this experience this year, both the excitement and struggles. Things started off hot and heavy, and it was immediately looking like the meat pole would be loaded. Be sure to stay tuned for Part 2.

After taking up the recurve this spring, my good buddy Frank was shooting great, and we set out to get him a black bear. We were hunting some brand new country in a very remote area. After shooting great in camp, Frank missed the bear, then another bad shot. We found out later that his string was hanging up on a button on his jacket, so he was very lucky to recover the bear and learn a valuable lesson.
Early in the spring season, I was able to connect on a black bear with a knapped stone arrowhead, and it performed beautifully. I severely mis-judged the bear, and he turned out to be the biggest black bear I've ever killed with a bow at 7 foot and a 19 1/4" skull.
When hunting Mountain goats or similar animals, here is what I recommend for the types and magnification power of optics. Over quite a few years, I've found this combination to be optimal.

Kodiak is probably the most opportunity-rich place to hunt mountain goats on the planet right now...
There is a lot of gear that you want to have for something like a mountain goat hunt, but here are a few key items you definitely want to bring...
Typically, the most satisfying animals to take are the ones that you have to work hard for, and often the hardest part is after the shot. I wouldn't have believed it would take 2 hours to get to where this goat stopped, but it did...and it was worth every brush-breaking, slippery step! #browning #leupoldoptics
Kodiak Island has become a hotspot for goat hunting. The goat numbers are booming, and the season on the south half of the island is open all winter long. As with many places in Alaska, just getting to where you're hunting is an adventure in itself, but once you're there, you're in paradise. #browning #leupoldoptics #oceangoats
