Here's a new song for Halloween. I hope you dig it.

A song I wrote for the Terrifying Lies Podcast.

From my current project, working title: "Midnight Carnival."

Charles drifted down Showmen’s Row, wearing Gunther’s costume and greasepaint, a bouquet of beach plums balanced in one white-gloved hand. The tents of the sideshow cast lined the dirt roadway, trimmed, laced. Each had a front yard ornamented by whims suited to each performer. Banners marked the tent apartments, each showcasing a likeness and title: Priya Petite Pate, the Pinheaded Girl; Rohos the Dogfaced Boy: Beast of the Pack; Fatima the Shadow Spinner: Master of Mist.

His guise as Griefer the Piano-Playing Prankster had no banner. Charles didn’t know when Mister Noir would commission it, but a glance along the parade of placards meant to him that his place among the showmen wouldn’t be complete until his banner unfurled.

The ten-in-one lay ahead, where he would spend the day performing the same fifteen-minute set hour-after-hour for a rotating, walkthrough audience. Nicholas Noir used the ten-in-one to rake in nickels, also to advertise the expanded shows under the big top.

Most performers’ tents rested abandoned, their residents summoned to the ten-in-one or the rehearsal tents. But the conjoined twins lingered outside in their yard, standing at a bureau and mirror, shirts dropped to reveal their tangled flesh. Misplaced bones and irregular bulges pressed outward beneath taut skin. Stray patches of hair scattered across their chests and backs. The twins studied their shared reflection, chins coated in shaving cream. Pierre shaved his brother’s chin with a straight razor.

“Allo, Griefer,” Jacque said with a wave.

“Good morning,” Charles said, his eyes lingering on their naked form, three ni***es, each a different size, two navels, one a cavern, the other not much more than a mole, marking the flesh just above the waistline of their specially made four-legged pants.

My kids and I were brainstorming on how to create a room-by-room haunted house that would truly terrify adults as we tend not to be scared by werewolves, vampires, and zombies anymore. Here are ten of the room themes we came up with:

• The I have to buy a lawnmower room
• The IRS tax audit room
• The my basement just flooded room
• The I think the transmission just blew room
• The telephone call at 1pm from the police station room
• The bad medical diagnosis room
• The divorce court room
• The margin call room
• The just got laid off room
• The parental inadequacy room

From my current project:
Charles moved along the abandoned midway. A breeze tugged at the tents’ loose edges, fluttering them like ghosts. Dead carnival games crouched, grinned, yawned, and winked from their dark kiosks, bled of the power and light that provided them life. The Ferris wheel stared down from above, a beast in slumber. A distant squeak from one of the rides chirped as the machine settled in the night. Somewhere a chain tapped time against a pole, driven by the night’s breath.

From my latest project:
The audience rumbled with anticipation beneath the sagging canvas of Nicholas Noir's one-ring big top. The scent of roasted peanuts, caramel apples, and sweat from nearly four-hundred bodies hunkered together on the portable bleachers permeated the air. A jumble of heterogeneous conversations combined into a symphony of delight and inquisitiveness, all eager for a show that promised to be unlike anything they’d ever seen. For an extra dime, these families, ranchers, and farmhands had been promised a spectacle worthy of their hard-earned money.

Props stood ready inside the ring, stirring anticipation, enormous balls, gilded platforms and boxes, racks of shiny swords and juggling devices, all ready to be hooked up by brightly-costumed performers and put to use.

The audience shifted, children chattering ,parents sating them with concessions purchased by roving vendors. Spectators prattled in anticipation as they devoured popcorn and candy floss, eyes fixed on the center ring. In one corner of the tent, a banjo man, fiddler, trombonist, and drummer tuned their instruments. The same quartet that had played at the roustabout party the night before.
