Friday Focus: The Art of Resourcefulness in Indie Filmmaking
As an independent filmmaker, I've learned to embrace the limitations of our budget and turn them into opportunities for creativity. When it comes to locations and scheduling, we have to think outside the box and find ways to maximize our resources. For me, this approach not only adds to the authenticity of the story but also forces us to be more innovative and resourceful.
Take our recent film, "Out of Time", for example. We had to get creative with our outdoor filming schedule, and Mother Nature was kind enough to provide us with some beautiful October weather. Our production team seized the opportunity to capture the perfect mood and atmosphere for those scenes. It was a great reminder that sometimes, less is more, and that constraints can actually lead to more innovative solutions.

Charla Marie Bailey is a Film and Stage Actress. She has been acting for over twenty-five years and started her career in Chicago as a model and actress before moving to Minnesota. Charla Marie also enjoys making her own films under Passion & Purpose Films and hosting the Red Carpet for Twin Cities Film Fest. During her down time, she enjoys working with her hands, spending time with family and hula hooping.

This production was definitely a change in pace after coming from two very poignant dramas. It was important to me to show Black people just existing, without it being centered around trauma. And my hope is to continue to create that kind of diversity in stories.

What Marilyn Didn't Know was the second short film produced under Djini Productions. At the time, there were a lot of mass shootings happening (not that much has changed), and it had me wondering, what would happen if the families or loved ones of these terrorists knew what was about to happen, would they do something about it?
In this story Marilyn has a seemingly perfect life, but when all that is in jeopardy there seems to be no way out. The humiliation that would come from that will be a stain that she would never be able to wipe clean.

There have been a lot of people who have supported me on my journey as a filmmaker, but a person I would love to give a special shout-out to is of H8C productions.
When I was ready to take on writing, directing, and producing my first short film "911", I had reached out to Justin to see if he was open to co-directing and producing with me since I had no idea what I was doing. And he said yes with no hesitation, and since then he's been a part of all my projects at different capacities. That's my Bestie!
I can't stress enough that it is important to find your village as an independent filmmaker, and I'm glad and honored that Justin is a part of mine.

A little story time. When I began my journey as a filmmaker, like many other filmmakers of that time we all felt the weight of the epidemic of police brutality against the Black community. So even though it was technically my second script I had attempted to write, it became my first production because I was hoping to make sense of the world as it was/is.
Which is why we have the two scenarios. One in which the police didn't try to cover up the unnecessary shooting but attempted to help, and the opposite scenario which happened all too often.
I know it's an uncomfortable conversation for some, but it's the hard truth. A routine traffic stop should not end in the loss of life.
There are a lot of small nuggets in this short film. What else did you catch?

That's a wrap on production!
I am so incredibly proud of these people right here. They showed up for me, themselves, and each other every single day - they brought solutions where we had to improvise, and most importantly, they all came with extremely positive attitudes and gave it their best. If you see their names on a call sheet, lucky you - because that is just how they made me feel - lucky. I couldn't in a million years imagine how fortunate I'd be, to be surrounded by such amazing and supportive people on my first feature film.
For everyone who came through, and cared for this feature like it was their own, I appreciate you and wish you continued success!
