PBS and WNET have released, for the first time ever, a DVD box set of all 12 hours of the original An American Family Series broadcast in 1973. Also included in this release is the 2011 Anniversary Edition produced by Alan and Susan Raymond that encapsules the 12-hour series into a two-hour feature film.

Emily Nussbaum's new book chronicles the Birth of Reality TV and will be available this June. We thank her for selecting a production still of Alan and I filming An American Family in sunny Santa Barbara. She discusses two of our films, AN AMERICAN FAMILY and THE POLICE TAPES, as pivotal documentaries in the birth of unscripted television.

Our dear friend Chief Anthony Bouza passed away at age 94. He was truly a rare individual—a liberal cop who spoke his mind. We are forever indebted to Chief Bouza for granting us access to the South Bronx Precinct 44 for our first film THE POLICE TAPES. Chief Bouza took the risk of allowing two eager and naïve filmmakers to videotape the raw and emotional complexities of urban crime. This film would forever change our lives. The Chief will be truly missed.
