A Beautiful and Strange Homeland - Odysseas Elytis

“I’ve never seen a homeland more strange and beautiful
Than this one that fell to my lot
Throws a line to catch fish, catches birds instead
Sets up a boat on land, garden in the waters
Weeps kisses, the ground emigrates
Becomes a pauper, gets brave
Tries for a stone, gives up
Tries to carve it, works miracles
Goes into a boat, reaches the ocean
Looks for revolutions, wants tyrants.”

Did you know that during ancient times, the Greek island of Tinos was known as Ophioussa and Ydroussa due to the abundance of snakes and water sources? Legend has it that Poseidon, the island's guardian, drove the snakes away, earning him high reverence. Tinos played a significant role in the Greek Revolution against Turkish rule and became part of the Modern Greek State in 1830. Post-liberation, Tinos emerged as a prominent religious and cultural hub, nurturing renowned artists who shaped modern Greek art. The island's history is marred by the torpedoing of the warship Elli in its port in August 1940 during World War II. Despite suffering under Italian and German occupation, the resilient inhabitants of Tinos actively participated in the Resistance against the oppressors.

Sparta, an ancient Greek warrior society, rose to power by defeating Athens in the Peloponnesian War. The Spartan way of life revolved around devotion to the state and military duty.

Military activity played a crucial role in ancient Sparta. From the tender age of seven, young boys would leave their homes to undergo rigorous military training at a specialized institution known as the 'agoge'. Here, they would reside collectively with peers of their own age, a practice designed to prepare them for their future roles in the armed forces. The soldiers of Sparta were specifically trained as hoplites, which were heavily armed infantry soldiers. The Spartan military gained renown for their expertise in ground-based combat.

A Man & His Rollei Discover 1950s Greece.

Interview and photos as featured in Portes Magazine, with photographer Robert McCabe, whose lens have throughout the years captured the essence of our collective human existence, and the wonders of the natural world. From the brightly colored streets of Havana, Cuba, to the endless snowy-white plains of Antarctica, McCabe has traveled the globe, preserving unique moments with the click of his camera.

'In 1961, my brother and I were driving from Ioannina to Metsovo. We stopped in Ano Peristeri to take some photographs of an old arched stone bridge next to the modern bridge. I photographed three spirited little girls in dresses held together with safety pins. They had charm that could not be measured, with warm smiles for the unexpected visitors'.

McCabe first traveled to Europe in 1954, traversing through France, Italy, and Greece on a photo tour. He returned to Greece again in 1955 and 1957 to photograph the Cyclades for National Geographic. Following several exhibits of his work, he published his first book, Metamorphosis, in 1979. Since then, McCabe has published over 15 books and catalogs, the majority of which reflect his travels and photography in Greece over a span of more than 50 years.

What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others."-- a very spiritual quote by Pericles, to give you food for thought about the impact you can have in other peoples' lives.

Pericles was a renowned Athenian statesman, general, and orator during the Golden Age of Athens in the 5th century BCE. He championed democratic principles, empowering Athenian citizens in decision-making.

Under his leadership, Athens flourished culturally, producing remarkable achievements in philosophy, drama, and architecture. However, his policies also led Athens into the Peloponnesian War, marking a decline in its power. Despite this, Pericles' legacy endures as a symbol of democratic ideals and cultural brilliance in ancient Greece.

Beautiful Greek island Corfu, known as Kerkyra in Greek, derives its name from the Nymph Korkyra, daughter of the River God, Asopus, as per legend. Poseidon, the God of the Sea, enamored with the nymph, abducted her and brought her to this island.

Legend also claims Corfu as the island of the Phaeacians, where Odysseus found refuge during his journey back to Ithaca.

Archaeological findings validate human habitation on the island since the Paleolithic Era. In ancient times, Corfu served as a significant trading hub, inhabited by the Phoenicians.

It engaged in commerce with various Adriatic Sea towns, establishing Corfu as a formidable naval power and a notable colonial settlement, known today as Paleopolis. The remnants of this ancient settlement lie opposite the Mon Repos Palace in Corfu Town. Additionally, several ancient temples, including the temple of Artemis, have been excavated across the island.

11/04/2024

Democracy, defined as governance by the populace, originates from the Greek term dēmokratia, formed by combining dēmos ("people") and kratos ("rule") in the mid-5th century BCE. It was coined to describe the political structures found in certain Greek city-states, most notably Athens, at that time.

Cleisthenes of Athens (born c. 570 bce—died c. 508) was a statesman regarded as the founder of Athenian democracy, serving as chief archon (highest magistrate) of Athens (525–524). Cleisthenes successfully allied himself with the popular Assembly against the nobles (508) and imposed democratic reform.

Did you know that Ancient Greeks used to add water to their wine?

Ancient Greeks often diluted their wine with water, a practice reflecting their deep reverence for the drink. There was even a god of wine in the Pantheon, god Dionysus. Excessive drinking was seen as uncivilized and it was considered hubris for mortals to get drunk; a habit suited only to barbarians. Only Dionysus was thought to have been capable of consuming wine without getting drunk.
