Nice review of 'Dyspnea'' by Atheana by Accidental Music Reviewer
“DYSPNEA” BY ATHEANA
Atheana are a red hot Alt-Rock/Post Hardcore band from Manchester who have come out all guns blazing with only their second single “Dyspnea” (pronounced Disp-Nee-Uh). Released through Manchester label MUK Records, this comes hot on the heels of their debut single “Shift Your Focus”
This is exactly the kind of alt-rock I really enjoy listening to: atmospheric, fast and unrelenting. It is multi-layered, melodic and immediately grabs your attention from the start. Musically the sound is immense and really overwhelms the senses (in a good way). The guitar playing is exemplary and creates wave after wave of colourful soundscapes. Ellis Anderson’s drumming is outstanding, he has the machine gun delivery associated with the post-hardcore genre down to a tee.
Amongst the aural chaos being dished out by her bandmates, Soph Payton’s hypnotic vocal delivery shines out like a beacon of pure light and virtue. She has an amazing sounding voice which acts as a perfect foil to the crashing riffs and hooks being thrown out by Stuart Wooley and Ross Jubber.
Soph joins the ranks of a growing number of strong female vocalists turning the tide of this previously male dominated genre of music. Soph and others like Danielle from Bled The Fifth, Maisie Manterfield of Air Drawn Dagger and Liv Johnson from Raised By Wolves are now showing the boys how it’s done. And then some. The balance her light , harmonious vocal delivery sounds with the audio assault being unleashed behind her is near perfect.
Once you have heard this single and their debut, it is plain to see that this band is going places. As a newly converted fan-boy (fan-old man does not have the same ring to it), I intend to jump on the bandwagon and strap in for a wild ride.
This track literally has everything dedicated fans of the heavy end of the alternative spectrum could wish for. Its feel, style and intense vibe is an absolute pleasure to listen to. It is a satisfying sensory overload you will never tire of experiencing. “Dyspnea” has instant “playback ability” and I defy anyone to just listen to it once.
If Atheana have more tracks like this up their sleeves, then there is no stopping them. They could be destined to become an all conquering juggernaut on the alt-rock/post hardcore scene.
I am just glad that I got to discover this band relatively early on, as I predict that if they make it big (and they have every chance), lots of dubious music commentators and followers will claim that they knew about this amazing band from the very beginning. And if that happens, both you and I will know the truth.
So folks, to recap. Atheana have the potential to be a colossal talent on the alternative rock scene. “Dyspnea” is a monster of a single and will no doubt feature in my best songs of 2022 playlist. All you have to do now is to play this song constantly and tell everyone you know how good it is, because that is what I intend to do. Starting from now.
