Murania Press has just published Ed Hulse's history of Doubleday's Crime Club in its Golden Age (defined as the imprint's first 12 years, 1928 to 1940) as a standalone monograph. It's a revised, corrected, and slightly expanded version of the Crime Club special section that appeared in the 2022 BLOOD 'N' THUNDER SPECIAL EDITION. It covers the line's origin, corporate structure, publishing policies, personnel changes, marketing strategies, and sales performance during the period in review. And, of course, it covers the key books and authors. An appendix lists the 1928-1940 releases in order of publication and identifies the titles designated as the monthly Crime Club Selections mailed to subscribers. Tomorrow morning we leave for Pittsburgh (actually, its Mars-Cranberry suburb) for the 2022 PulpFest, which happens to be the 50th consecutive summer convention for devotees and collectors of pulp fiction. We've attended exactly half of those confabs, every single one since 1997. We debuted BLOOD 'N' THUNDER at the 2002 show and have introduced other Murania Press publications there most years since. At this year's PulpFest we'll be selling all three 2022 releases—the 336-page "bookazine" BLOOD 'N' THUNDER 2022 SPECIAL EDITION, our second collection of weird-menace yarns from the infamous Red Circle pulps, titled MISTRESS OF DEATH AND DESIRE, and the newly revised and expanded version of THE WILD WEST OF FICTION AND FILM. According to Facebook "Memories" it was five years ago today that we shipped the first copies of BLOOD 'N' THUNDER PRESENTS: PRIDE OF THE PULPS, a collection of lengthy essays surveying exemplary all-fiction magazines. Since then PRIDE OF THE PULPS has been a consistent best-seller for Murania Press, outperforming all but four or five of our titles. It's also one of the best-reviewed books in our catalogue and has been included in Recommended Reading lists of several university-level courses. We've been busy lately, publishing three books in the last six weeks. The latest one is a second edition of THE WILD WEST OF FICTION AND FILM, originally released four years ago with—we're embarrassed to admit—virtually zero promotion or marketing support. It was too good a product to let wither, so we've revised and expanded the contents, swapped out a few essays and replaced them with new ones, and completely redesigned the book in a different (and better) format. Twenty years ago we launched BLOOD 'N' THUNDER, a "fanzine" dedicated to the study and appreciation of adventure, mystery and melodrama in media of the early 20th century. That Summer 2002 first issue, just 36 pages long, was printed at the local Kinko's. Originally the zine was a slender quarterly; now it's an annual of book-length proportions. The just-finished 2022 edition boasts 336 pages, making it the longest issue ever—and one of which we're inordinately proud.
