Shakti, the recently reconvened global fusion trailblazers, have been nominated for 2024 GRAMMY™ Award for Best Global Music Album for This Moment – the group’s first new studio album in more than 45 years, released on June 30, 2023 on the Abstract Logix label. “After our most successful tour ever of three continents, Shakti gets a GRAMMY nomination for our album This Moment…” reacted to co-founding guitarist and composer John McLaughlin. “We are thrilled and delighted beyond words.”

“Our 2023 world tour celebrated 50 years of love and beauty,” Zakir Hussain adds. “Congratulations to my longtime brother in the music, John McLaughlin, and to our brilliant bandmates Shankar Mahadevan, Selvaganesh Vinayakram, and Ganesh Rajagopalan.”

Shakti recently concluded their triumphant 27-city 50th Anniversary Tour, which featured 17 U.S. performances with opening sets by longtime admirers Jerry Douglas, Bill Frisell, Béla Fleck, and John Scofield. Highlights of the tour – during which the thrilling cross-cultural musical ideas first broached on This Moment was further explored and expanded – included a performance at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium

When Shakti co-founders John McLaughlin (guitar) and Zakir Hussain (tabla) first directed their virtuosity towards exploring common ground between Eastern and Western musical traditions – starting in private sessions, then on their 1975 debut album – the notion of such a hybrid was so novel that fans, industry executives, and even the media expressed concerned bafflement. Is McLaughlin, former collaborator with the likes of Miles Davis and Tony Williams and the leader of the titanic jazz-rock juggernaut the Mahavishnu Orchestra, really throwing it all away to sit barefoot and play deeply introspective acoustic music with virtuoso musicians barely known to Western audiences?

Fifty years on, McLaughlin and Hussain are still bandmates and brothers, while Shakti’s influence has inspired subsequent generations of musicians to float above political and artistic borders and forge their own global fusions. Concluding in Austin, Texas on September 16, this year’s sold-out U.S. tour in support of the group’s first new studio album in 45 years, This Moment (released June 23, 2023), emphasized not only Shakti’s tremendous impact on what we now call “world music,” but also demonstrated the ongoing viability of Shakti’s initial concept. Watch a special performance from the sold-out show at the iconic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville here.

This Moment was recorded in isolation, with each member delivering their contributions separately from their respective home cities. The tour proved conclusively that the album’s thrillingly precise unison passages, high-wire solo statements, and roiling rhythmic intensity were no feat of studio trickery. The tour’s twenty-eight dates were themselves an escalation, as the members of the current Shakti lineup – McLaughin, Hussain, vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan, and percussionist Selvaganesh Vinayakram – grew closer, re-established long standing friendships, and plunged further into the spiritual ecstasy embodied in their intricate, collaborative music. Audiences were awed, and illustrious Shakti fans Jerry Douglas, Béla Fleck, Bill Frisell, and John Scofield – “truly fine musicians whom I’ve admired for decades,” in McLaughlin’s words – took turns performing special solo opening spots.

Now, with the members of Shakti returning to their individual pursuits, what remains are the memories of those riveting concert performances and This Moment – a recording that stands both as summary and extension of Shakti’s reverent, powerful, and revolutionary deconstruction and reassembly of East and West. Of his comrades, McLaughlin professes that “their influence on me as a musician and human being is without equal. It’s really a thrill, and I’m delighted to be part of this marvelous tradition of Shakti.”

“And now,” reflects Zakir Hussain, “the decades of individual music experiences we all have had poured into this gathering's offering has resulted in an extraordinary depth to the sound and interaction of this band.”

What critics are saying about This Moment:

“...extraordinary musical communication that transcends traditions, concepts, and formal approaches, making Shakti a band for the ages.” – Thom Jurek, Allmusic.com

“This Moment, the group’s seventh outing together, captures Shakti once again stretching the boundaries of Hindustani and Carnatic music while injecting Western ideas of harmony into its successful world music formula.” – Bill Milkowski, Downbeat

“The stratospheric level of collective expertise creates a mystical musical vessel designed to take the listener on a transcendental celebration of life.” – Jimmy Leslie, Guitar Player

“...this remarkable album, played with such a high degree of musicianship it seems beyond the realm of mere mortals…. goes beyond anything heard before in jazz…” – Stuart Nicholson, Jazzwise (Five Star Review)

The pair of small hand drums known as tabla has been THE essential percussion instrument in Hindustani classic music since the 18th century. Listen: https://debashish.bandcamp.com/

Blossoming at the nexus of tradition and innovation, where soul and technique feed into one another in pursuit of an ecstatic oneness, the music of Debashish Bhattacharya has astonished and moved listeners since he first unveiled his unprecedented concept of Hindustani slide guitar in the late 1970s. As a young man, Bhattacharya fused his love of Hawaiian steel guitar with his family’s deep roots in traditional Indian music, discovering that slide guitar techniques are ideally suited to the microtonal inflections and disarmingly vocal-like melodic cadences of Hindustani forms. In the process, he created an entirely new instrumental tradition – leading the way with such virtuosity, sensitivity, and imagination that global music pioneer John McLaughlin proclaimed that “Debashish is the master of the slide guitar. He has no equal.”

Bhattacharya’s latest recording, The Sound of the Soul, is a tribute to another pioneer of Hindustani music, sarod virtuoso Ustad Ali Akbar Khan – whose 100th birthday was marked in April of 2022. Built around the powerfully focused and absorbing “To His Lotus Feet,” which encompasses a vast range of textures over nearly 40 minutes,
The Sound of the Soul features Bhattacharya on his self-designed chaturangui in duet with percussionists Padmashree Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri (tabla) or Pandit Akhilesh Gundechha (pakhawaj). The Chaturangui is a six-string hollow-neck lapsteel with the addition of three sets of strings: two drone strings on the bass side of the 6 main melody strings, two rhythm strings on the treble side, and 12-14 resonating strings on the bass side. With this configuration, the Chaturangui traverses the traditions of East to West; a journey emanating directly from Hawaiian to Western music, ultimately forging a bond between Indian traditional raga music and contemporary traditions in Europe and North America. The sparse setting of just guitar and percussion allows for careful examination of Bhattacharya’s awe-inspiring technique, whether essaying gracefully static alap-like stillness or surging through thrilling uptempo passages that showcase the jaw-dropping clarity and precision of his playing.

Open-minded Western listeners will delight in hearing Bhattacharya on his own, perhaps having experienced him as a part of McLaughlin’s Remember Shakti band (as heard on the 2001 live album Remember Shakti – Saturday Night in Bombay). Bhattacharya has also been featured in collaborations with bluegrass Dobro master Jerry Douglas,
eclectic American roots multi-instrumentalist Bob Brozman, avant-garde guitarist Henry Kaiser, British guitarist Martin Simpson, or African kora virtuoso Ballake Sissoko. He has twice been nominated for Grammy awards, and is also active as a teacher and instrument builder.
Given the immense scope of his accomplishments, The Sound of the Soul is a compelling reminder of what lies at the core of Bhattacharya’s art: A stunning, refreshingly pure document that will delight, intrigue, and inspire both familiar and unfamiliar listeners

Following word of the Summer 2023 release of This Moment – their first new studio album in 46 years – revolutionary world music ensemble Shakti will continue to discover and explore the musical common ground bridging East and West on an extensive U.S. tour, beginning August 17 in Boston. Born in the mid-1970s out of the deep artistic and spiritual connection bonding British guitarist John McLaughlin and Indian tabla player Zakir Hussain, Shakti’s cross-cultural musical conversation dissolved boundaries with uncommon passion, grace, and dexterity –awakening subsequent generations of musicians to the possibilities of such hybrids in the process. Alongside McLaughlin and Hussain, today’s Shakti features vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan, and percussionist Selvaganesh Vinayakram (son of original Shakti ghatam player T.H. “Vikku” Vinayakram).

Looking ahead to the performances, McLaughlin equates the endeavor to a homecoming of sorts. “Shakti was born in the USA in 1973,” he reflects, “and is also no stranger to American audiences. We’ve played concerts all over the US from coast to coast and north to south – and everywhere we’ve played, we’ve had wonderful audiences.”

Joining Shakti on more than half of the dates will be another performer dedicated to intermingling and transcending genres, Béla Fleck, who will open the performances with a solo set and will then join forces with Shakti later each evening. “Hearing Shakti was a revelation and I started listening right when they started,” Fleck recalls. “Something about Shakti, and also making music with Zakir, was very relatable – perhaps akin to the acoustic guitar and fiddle. But it wasn’t until playing with Zakir and Edgar Meyer [on 2009’s Melody of Rhythm: Triple Concerto & Music for Trio] that I started having more of a sense of what they were up to. Keeping in mind the virtuosic and energetic level of the band, I’ll be attempting to create a solo set that mesmerizes and excites.”

“Béla is a truly fine musician and one I have admired for decades,” McLaughlin says. “In addition, Béla has toured and recorded with Zakir Hussain and is no stranger to the musical culture of India.” McLaughlin and Fleck have only shared the stage once before – during a Chick Corea birthday show at the Blue Note in New York – making these upcoming collaborations a thrilling proposition for both audiences and performers alike. Shakti will also be joined by Bill Frisell and other special guests on select shows.

With the recording of their new studio album now complete, the members of Shakti now await the opportunity to continue their pan-global dialogue. “In our initial incarnation,” Zakir Hussain concludes, “we did not always have the time nor the means to explore. Now, with the decades of individual musical experiences we all have poured into this, the result reveals an extraordinary depth and level of interaction within this band.”

Foreword by John McLaughlin

The friendship and admiration between master slide guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya and myself goes back over 20 years.
The first time we played together was during The Shakti and Friends tour of India in 2000. Debashish appears on the recording we made during that tour, and he also appears on the album Floating Point I recorded several years later.
I am really happy to listen to his latest album called The Sound of the Soul
Debashish is The Master of the slide guitar. From his soulful playing in the introductions (the Alaps) to his compositions, to the brilliance of his up tempo playing, he has no equal. A must for all guitarists!
