Shakti ft John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain: Bending the Rules (This Moment) Live from The Ryman
Shakti, the recently reconvened global fusion trailblazers, have been nominated for 2024 GRAMMY™ Award for Best Global Music Album for This Moment – the group’s first new studio album in more than 45 years, released on June 30, 2023 on the Abstract Logix label. “After our most successful tour ever of three continents, Shakti gets a GRAMMY nomination for our album This Moment…” reacted to co-founding guitarist and composer John McLaughlin. “We are thrilled and delighted beyond words.”
“Our 2023 world tour celebrated 50 years of love and beauty,” Zakir Hussain adds. “Congratulations to my longtime brother in the music, John McLaughlin, and to our brilliant bandmates Shankar Mahadevan, Selvaganesh Vinayakram, and Ganesh Rajagopalan.”
Shakti recently concluded their triumphant 27-city 50th Anniversary Tour, which featured 17 U.S. performances with opening sets by longtime admirers Jerry Douglas, Bill Frisell, Béla Fleck, and John Scofield. Highlights of the tour – during which the thrilling cross-cultural musical ideas first broached on This Moment was further explored and expanded – included a performance at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium

Shakti: Shrini's Dream (This Moment) Live from The Ryman, Nashville
When Shakti co-founders John McLaughlin (guitar) and Zakir Hussain (tabla) first directed their virtuosity towards exploring common ground between Eastern and Western musical traditions – starting in private sessions, then on their 1975 debut album – the notion of such a hybrid was so novel that fans, industry executives, and even the media expressed concerned bafflement. Is McLaughlin, former collaborator with the likes of Miles Davis and Tony Williams and the leader of the titanic jazz-rock juggernaut the Mahavishnu Orchestra, really throwing it all away to sit barefoot and play deeply introspective acoustic music with virtuoso musicians barely known to Western audiences?
Fifty years on, McLaughlin and Hussain are still bandmates and brothers, while Shakti’s influence has inspired subsequent generations of musicians to float above political and artistic borders and forge their own global fusions. Concluding in Austin, Texas on September 16, this year’s sold-out U.S. tour in support of the group’s first new studio album in 45 years, This Moment (released June 23, 2023), emphasized not only Shakti’s tremendous impact on what we now call “world music,” but also demonstrated the ongoing viability of Shakti’s initial concept. Watch a special performance from the sold-out show at the iconic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville here.
This Moment was recorded in isolation, with each member delivering their contributions separately from their respective home cities. The tour proved conclusively that the album’s thrillingly precise unison passages, high-wire solo statements, and roiling rhythmic intensity were no feat of studio trickery. The tour’s twenty-eight dates were themselves an escalation, as the members of the current Shakti lineup – McLaughin, Hussain, vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan, and percussionist Selvaganesh Vinayakram – grew closer, re-established long standing friendships, and plunged further into the spiritu

Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya (Slide Guitar): The Sound of the Soul Interview (Abstract Logix, 2023)
Listen: https://debashish.bandcamp.com/
Blossoming at the nexus of tradition and innovation, where soul and technique feed into one another in pursuit of an ecstatic oneness, the music of Debashish Bhattacharya has astonished and moved listeners since he first unveiled his unprecedented concept of Hindustani slide guitar in the late 1970s. As a young man, Bhattacharya fused his love of Hawaiian steel guitar with his family’s deep roots in traditional Indian music, discovering that slide guitar techniques are ideally suited to the microtonal inflections and disarmingly vocal-like melodic cadences of Hindustani forms. In the process, he created an entirely new instrumental tradition – leading the way with such virtuosity, sensitivity, and imagination that global music pioneer John McLaughlin proclaimed that “Debashish is the master of the slide guitar. He has no equal.”
Bhattacharya’s latest recording, The Sound of the Soul, is a tribute to another pioneer of Hindustani music, sarod virtuoso Ustad Ali Akbar Khan – whose 100th birthday was marked in April of 2022. Built around the powerfully focused and absorbing “To His Lotus Feet,” which encompasses a vast range of textures over nearly 40 minutes,
The Sound of the Soul features Bhattacharya on his self-designed chaturangui in duet with percussionists Padmashree Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri (tabla) or Pandit Akhilesh Gundechha (pakhawaj). The Chaturangui is a six-string hollow-neck lapsteel with the addition of three sets of strings: two drone strings on the bass side of the 6 main melody strings, two rhythm strings on the treble side, and 12-14 resonating strings on the bass side. With this configuration, the Chaturangui traverses the traditions of East to West; a journey emanating directly from Hawaiian to Western music, ultimately forging a bond between Indian traditional raga music and contemporary traditions in Europe and North America. The sparse setting of just guitar and percussion allows for care

Shakti 50th Anniversary Album and World Tour Announcement (Abstract Logix)
Almost a half-century ago, Shakti awakened the world.
An unprecedented, transcontinental collaboration, Shakti united eastern and western musicians, and in the process forged the template for what is now called “world music.” From the West came virtuoso British guitarist John McLaughlin, who re-wired jazz via his work with Miles Davis and the Tony Williams Lifetime. From the East came visionary tabla player Zakir Hussain, who had accompanied legendary Hindustani musicians from adolescence. A music shop owner in New York City’s Greenwich Village connected the two in 1969, sowing the seeds of what was to become Shakti. “There wasn’t a first meeting,” Hussain recalls today. “It felt like a reunion of long-lost brothers…”
In 1973, McLaughlin stunned the music industry by walking away from the Olympian popularity and acclaim of his pioneering jazz/rock ensemble, the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Something else was calling out to him – a music that reflected his evolving spiritual practice while feeding his insatiable hunger to converse, communicate, and explore.
With Hussain, violinist Shankar, and ghatam player T.H. “Vikku” Vinayakram, McLaughlin founded Shakti. “For me,” McLaughlin reflects, “it was an imperative that Shakti become my permanent group after the Mahavishnu Orchestra.” Together they honed an ecstatic new fusion, blazing uncharted pathways and demonstrating the potential of such global composites to generations of musicians around the world.
Now McLaughlin and Hussain are preparing to resume their journey – joined by percussionist V. Selvaganesh (T.H. Vinayakram’s son), vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, and violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan – for an album of new compositions and a world tour marking Shakti’s 50th anniversary. Today’s Shakti honors the legacy of the original band by acknowledging their tradition while continuing to push beyond existing boundaries into new musical landscapes. “It’s really a thrill,” McLaughl
