Uncommon Guide Books People. Place. Narrative. Uncommon is a book project about place. UNCOMMON seeks to communicate the multiplicity in the voice of a city.

“It is not down on any map; true places never are.”
Herman Melville

UNCOMMON is a book project about place. With its conception on the Mediterranean islands of Malta and Gozo in 2010, Uncommon has since traveled across Stockholm, London, Cairo and Dubai. Texts, photographs, maps, routes, insights and itineraries combine to reveal the codes and constructs of a place, to celebrate and revere the pe

culiar and the everyday. Each edition is devoid of bias and agenda, but rather focused on joy, sorrow, migration, return, metamorphosis and redemption. It is a medium for the complex and distinct social, economic and aesthetic identities. Established local and international writers, photographers and artists weave in with emerging talents and voices. It is an attempt to redefine the boundaries of community. In 2016 UNCOMMON explores cities across North Africa, South Asia and West Asia and their urban and social contexts. The series will focus on unraveling the potential of the frontier city and its complexity through internal voices beyond limited popular representation and restrictive media depictions. These frontiers, some while not current transit hubs or recognised tourist destinations, remain integral to our understanding of cultural and urban history.
