Apple Valley Review The Apple Valley Review is a semiannual online literary journal established in 2005. Welcome! It is published in the spring and fall of the year.

This page is open to all friends, readers, and writers, both published and unpublished. The cover photograph, also a detail, is from "Apple Blossom" by Myrthe Krook.) The Apple Valley Review, a semiannual online literary journal, was founded in 2005 by its c

urrent editor, Leah Browning. Each issue features a collection of poetry, short fiction, and essays. This journal is a member of the Community of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP). Past issues have been preserved at worldwide research libraries by Stanford University's LOCKSS system, archived in the Electronic Collection of Library and Archives Canada/Bibliothèque et Archives Canada, submitted to the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and licensed with EBSCO. Individual poems, short stories, and essays that were originally published in the Apple Valley Review have later appeared as selections, finalists, and/or notable/distinguished stories by Best American Short Stories, Best American Essays, Best of the Net, Best of the Web, Best Microfiction, The Best Small Fictions, Best New Poets, New Poetry from the Midwest, storySouth Million Writers Award, and The Wigleaf Top 50 (Very) Short Fictions. All work published in the Apple Valley Review during a given calendar year is also considered for the annual Editor's Prize. There's still a little time to send in your translations or your short memoirs, personal essays, and/or pieces of creative nonfiction.

We also consider short stories, flash fiction, microfiction, prose with genre elements (e.g., fabulism/magical realism), poetry, and prose poetry. Please send work that is original, previously unpublished, and in English. Translations are welcome if permission has been granted. (Please note that the guidelines include instructions specifically for translations.)

Submissions for the Fall 2024 issue of the Apple Valley Review (Vol. 19, No. 2) are open through Sunday, September 15, 2024.

Additional information and complete submission guidelines are available online. Simultaneous submissions are accepted. There are no fees.

Congratulations to Scott F. Gandert, whose story "Sellinger" was included on the Longlist for The Wigleaf Top 50 Very Short Fictions 2024. "Sellinger" originally appeared in the Fall 2023 issue of the Apple Valley Review.

Jackie Sabbagh, whose story "Philip" also appeared in our Fall 2023 issue (and was also nominated), was included in the Top 50 for "Cameron, Asher, Jonah, Jack," a story that appeared in SmokeLong Quarterly.

Best New Poets 2023, edited by Anna Journey and series editor Jeb Livingood, was published by Samovar Press in February 2024. It is available in paperback and e-book formats and is distributed by the University of Virginia Press.

The Wandering Life, the first English translation of Yves Bonnefoy’s account of his life as a traveler, was published in March 2024 by Seagull Books. This collection of verse and prose is translated from the French by Hoyt Rogers and includes "Three Memories of the Journey," which originally appeared in the Spring 2023 issue of the Apple Valley Review. The Wandering Life is distributed by University of Chicago Press and can be purchased via their website.

If you are in or around New Jersey, there will be a book launch and reading on Saturday, March 16, for Forget About Sleep by Miriam Levine. This manuscript won the 2023 Laura Boss Narrative Poetry Award.

Two of the poems included in this collection, "Ben's Rendezvous" and "Deeper, Darker," were first published in the Fall 2022 issue of the Apple Valley Review.

Noche Triste: A Memoir of Anorexia, a book by Robert Radin, was published in November 2023 by Ibidem/Columbia University Press. His essay on this topic, "Noche Triste" ("Sad Night"), first appeared in the Spring 2018 issue (Vol. 13, No. 1) of the Apple Valley Review. "Noche Triste" was later included on the list of Notable Essays and Literary Nonfiction of 2018 in The Best American Essays 2019 (edited by Rebecca Solnit and series editor Robert Atwan).
