BREAKING NEWS - Canada officially has its first Animal Cruelty Investigation Unit in the province of Alberta. Constables Ted Dyck and Ilka Cunningham, who are members of Humane Canada’s Violence Link Coalition Steering Committee, are credited with helping achieve this milestone for animal welfare in the province of Alberta.

Both Constables have been fighting for the animal cruelty dedicated force since 2017. It was clear to them that there was a direct correlation between cases of animal abuse and cases of human abuse, which is known as the Violence Link. “Now thinking about it, somebody that’s cruel to an animal, why would that person shy away from hurting a child or spouse in the end? It makes perfect sense. It’s rarely ever just animal abuse, it always affected humans in a way as well.” said Cst. Cunningham.

The new unit will be comprised of two Edmonton Police Service constables and a number of animal cruelty liaisons with the city.

Cst. Cunningham and Cst. Dyck presented at our recent Canadian Violence Link Conference, along with Brad Nichols from Calgary Humane Society, and Cst. Dennis Smithson from Calgary Police Service (who are also members of our coalition) where they highlighted the work that’s being done in Alberta to investigate cases of animal abuse and animal cruelty in correlation with human abuse, and how several agencies and sectors can collaborate together when dealing with such cases.

We congratulate these Constables on this achievement, and we are proud to have them both in our Canadian Violence Link Coalition Steering Committee.
