What a way to close out my speaking engagements this year as an invited speaker for the 2024 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Convention in Seattle, Washington, December 5-7th. After graduating from the 2023 ASHA Leadership Development Program, I was selected as a Reviewer for Business and Practice Management by Ebony Green and Amber Heape in recognition of my subject matter expertise. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am extremely honored to have served as a peer reviewer of proposals submitted to the topic area and have collaborated with my Convention Planning Committee colleagues to plan engaging educational programming for the 2024 ASHA Convention.

I am so thankful to have been selected for the Black Men’s Brain Health Conference Emerging Scholars Program during Super Bowl LVIII Week! This 15 month research program is made possible by the NFL Alumni Association, Alzheimer’s Association, National Institute on Aging at NIH, and many many more!

It is an honor to be representing as a Clinical Instructor of Speech-Language Pathology at the University of the District of Columbia and my nonprofit organization, Head to Speech, Inc. /https://www.headtospeech.org.

My research focuses on brain health education from the perspective of a Sports Speech-Language Pathologist. In addition to the integration of cognitive-communication tasks into the warm ups, sports drills, physical exercises, and daily activities of African American men who play or have played professional football throughout their lifetime in order to prevent or reduce cognitive decline, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. Sandra Jowers-Barber, host of UDC Forum the University’s cable television station asked me, “When is the best time for athletes to align their brands with social impact?” As the wife of a retired FIBA basketball player and sports mom, I believe the time is NOW!

I spent most of my 20s in graduate school and traveling overseas to Spain, Germany and the Czech Republic to support my now husband through the ups, downs, and life after basketball. I dedicated my 30s to researching athlete brain health, sports concussions and their effects on cognitive-communication skills. Now, I am raising my sons who are 6 and 4 to understand their brain health, as well as the power of using their academic and athletic abilities for good. This new NIL era calls for it much earlier than before. Sports is a lifestyle that we live. Space Jam is the go to movie and my living room is literally a basketball court on any given day! Aligning your brand with social impact especially for athletes starts very young because of the societal standards set for them. During my interview I also talk about some of the athletes who I believe to be good examples.

Inside my new book, “Align Your Brand with Social Impact” I discuss how I was able to transform my dissertation into a nonprofit organization, Head to Speech Incorporated. Through my research I found that there was a need to provide educational, scientific and charitable initiatives to help athletes and their support systems understand brain health and the impact that sports concussions can have on return to playing, learning and throughout their lifetime. Ultimately, my organization has now created a career pathways program and interprofessional task force summit and expo to bridge the gap between Athletics and Communication Sciences and Disorders.

I regret to inform myself that my away message must come off! That away message is a powerful tool! I’m looking forward to this new semester but I needed a brain break. I deserved it! To tell you the truth, I feel like I’m just now living THEE life I’ve worked so hard for. Once my son turned 3 it seemed like my whole life changed!

✔️ I achieved my goal of providing brain health education and neurocognitive training to current and retired professional football players as a Speech-Language Pathologist!

✔️ I led the first Head to Speech, Incorporated Board Retreat and watched the organization grow as we welcomed our first employee!

✔️ I’ve taken the time to become vulnerable about my journey to realign, rebrand, and restructure BIA BRAND with social impact. All while writing my first self-published book!!! I can’t wait to share more and release my book in the Fall!! I found myself wanting to write more so I’m releasing more books!!!

✔️ I thank God for blessing me with another year of teaching students at the University of the District of Columbia! I learned how to use Artificial Intelligence for academia during my own professional development. The presenter stated the facts. AI can be used as my TA! If I don’t team with AI then I will be replaced by someone who will.

This academic year will be full of learning, leadership development, social impact marketing, book signings, conferences, speaking engagements, collaborative research, and innovation!!

I have been striving for this moment in time for over a decade. The time where my passion for mass media, health communications and social marketing was perfectly aligned with my research, clinical and public health interests in brain health and sports concussion. My goal is simply to meet athletes and their support systems where they are with my Brain Workouts. I also provide them with this message, “Workout your brain and body! You only have one brain. Incorporate cognitive and communicative tasks into your physical exercises and daily routines to improve the longevity of your brain’s health.”

If I can be this clear on who my audience is, what I want to tell them and what I want them to do, you can also be intentional about the audience you wish to reach with your social impact. In my new book, “Align Your Brand with Social Impact”, I talk about my alignment journey. ALIGNMENT was a must for me. I literally couldn’t function anymore without making it happen for myself. I didn’t have to give up my dreams of producing talk show episodes, campaigns or educational programs. Instead I found a way to align my God-given talents to my career path and explore other transferable skills inside and outside of my field. The years spent on researching the significance of my areas of interest and the gaps I was destined to fill provided me with confidence and clarity to align my brand values and purpose to my cause, vision and mission. In doing so, I discovered my 5-Step Process to Massive Growth and Sustainability.

I am looking forward to presenting on such a passionate topic of mine at my profession’s national convention in November! To ignite the innovation in others is what I was born to do. Now more than ever do I realize how God has used me to empower others to become leaders and content creators and find ways to communicate key messages about image, communications, health, wellness, and lifestyle topics. In this instance, I will be speaking to speech-language pathologists about the communicative disorders impacting their patients or clients.

However, every profession that transforms lives should teach their students and professionals about public health initiatives, health literacy and other contemporary issues and policies, such as health disparities, cultural responsiveness, and interprofessional collaboration. We have to go beyond service or product delivery in order to develop, implement and evaluate effective tools and strategies that provide clarity, increase knowledge, change attitudes and behaviors, and inspire action to achieve social impact.

Thank you to the 2023 Topic Chairs and Committee for the Health Literacy: Optimizing Outcomes track for inviting our Executive Director, Dr. Tabia Pope to present a 2-Hour Master Class at the 2023 The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Convention in Boston, Massachusetts, which takes place from November 16-18th.

Thank you to for welcoming me last night! I’m blessed to have found my new home with a warm spirit and big heart for service. I had a great time with my Sorors!

One of the takeaways was that, “We’re not just pretty faces in a large but loving chapter. We’re also Gorgeous in Prince George’s with our Award Winning Nonprofit!”

I am extremely humbled that the Ivy Community Charities of Prince George’s County selected for the first cohort of nonprofits to participate in the Ivy Village Incubator for Nonprofit Excellence!

I am ready to serve my chapter and community in this capacity. Aligning my brand with social impact has always been my goal. Having the support of my Sorors as I reach more student-athletes with my programs and concussion recovery care packages means the world to me!
