We have special guests from the West Shore Educational Service District including Katrina Morris and Sgt Austin Morris and Bus Driver Rick Sidock visiting with us on the radio this morning! Tune in for some great insights as we discuss important community topics, including the ongoing Operation Safe Stop campaign during School Bus Safety Week from October 21-25.
This enforcement campaign is critical in ensuring the safety of children who rely on school buses, the safest mode of transportation for students. Here's what you should know:
In 2023, school bus-involved crashes in Michigan decreased by 5%, from 1,041 in 2022 to 988. However, fatal crashes increased from two in 2022 to five in 2023, though none of the victims were school bus occupants.
October had the highest number of school bus-related crashes, with Mondays and Tuesdays being the most common days.
Shockingly, Michigan school bus drivers reported 1,362 illegal passes in just one day in May 2024. Of those, 46 occurred on the right-hand side, which is extremely dangerous.
Michigan law is strict on illegal school bus passing:
Drivers who pass a stopped school bus may face fines up to $500.
If this leads to an injury, the penalty increases to $1,000 or up to one year in jail. If a fatality occurs, drivers may face 15 years in jail or a $7,500 fine.
Safety tips:
Always prepare to stop when a school bus's yellow lights flash.
Stop at least 20 feet away from buses when red lights are flashing.
Stay alert in school zones and residential areas.
Make sure you’re following the rules and keeping our kids safe! Stay tuned on-air for more information and special updates.
