"Bird with the largest ruffle:
Sable's dad has a great take on why the female bird chose her mate. I wanted to smash the
commonly held ideas planted in our brains from all those nature show narratives that tell us the female birds only choose mates who have a spectacular plumage. I assure you that even the least visually desired in all species, do mate and have wonderful offspring. To make the female bird one dimensional, and remove what she might also be looking for has always frustrated me. Even if she did pick the one with the biggest display of feathers, their future depends upon her, she still has to care for the babies, she has to be the best mother ever, make a home, keep them warm, or there would be no future birds, big feathers or not!"

"Royal Blue:
Krill and the ship's captain lie to the king about the existence of a unique shade of blue fabric in order to convince the king to sponsor their expedition. Tempting him with the idea that he could name it. This is based on a true story about the history of royal blue. In England, dating back to the 17th century, King Charles launched a competition amongst the clothiers to create the finest blue dye. The winner created a robe for Queen Charlotte. That royal blue is slightly more purple than the royal blue we have today. This story also tied in with my theme of the explorers' greedy desire to name animals and places that they “discovered”."

About WHEN THE LAKE BURNS:
When a local lake catches fire, a group of teens set out to see the spectacle for themselves—but not everything goes as planned. A very rare natural phenomenon is causing quite a stir in Corbeau River, Lake Kijikone has caught fire and grown into a veritable inferno. When the disaster occurs, an old local legend re-emerges, and a group of local teens decide to find out if the stories are true. Deep in the woods, one of the teens shares a secret so shocking that the group splits up—and the real nightmare begins.

Today we introduce our first 👀Sneak Peek👀 into Marianne Boucher's SURVIVAL OF THE GOODEST, a graphic novel for younger readers from Conundrum's YA imprint, Emanata!

Not everyone has book launches, comic fests or signings available to them, so as Conundrum Press launches new titles we aim to give readers a little taste of those experiences with Sneak Peeks! Each artist chooses panels or pages from their latest title and shares context or further reflections.

"The man-eating tree:
This book evolved from the image of a person being eaten by a tree. This was the constant
anchor. When the story developed I knew the character Krill, the naturalist, would undergo an
extreme transformation. I wondered if beauty could change him? I wanted him to experience an event that was so mysterious and beautiful that his theories about animals would be completely altered. His lament about not seeing the sky while he is lost is in reference to early explorers' desperate need to clear the land of forests and jungles, so they could see the sky, where their God was."

About SURVIVAL OF THE GOODEST 📚:
Sable has lived in a tight-knit community on a remote island for her whole life. With support from her parents, she’s trained for years to take up her position as the next Kerpathic, a messenger who travels through the dangerous forest to share news, medicine, and culture. When her father, the current Kerpathic, has an accident, Sable must step into her pre-destined role.

As her first mission goes awry, she wonders if she’s ready for this important but dangerous work. Until a young naturalist arrives on the island and sets off to capture a mysterious animal that’s never been seen on the mainland. Sable realizes that she can use her skills as a Kerpathic to defend the island’s animals and their way of life. But she quickly learns that she can’t do it alone.

In SURVIVAL OF THE GOODEST, Marianne Boucher (Talking to Strangers) explores ideas of animal sentience, interspecies communication, and environmental preservation.

Time for another Sneak Peek from IT REALLY IS! 👁️ 🫣 📚

Not everyone has book launches, comic fests or signings available to them, so as we launch new titles we aim to give readers a little taste of those experiences with Conundrum's Sneak Peeks! Each artist chooses panels or pages from their latest title and shares context or further reflections.

Cole Degenstein's IT REALLY IS launches later this fall, and below he shares some context:

"In part, ‘It Really Is’ is a story about a loss of control and surrendering to the cyclical nature of seasonal depression. I know what I need to feel better when it gets cold out and yet I refuse it- an annual disconnect between the body and the brain. Only once spring begins to peek out from under the snow do I notice the answer that had been under my nose the whole time."

– Cole Degenstein

About IT REALLY IS:
Winter begins with good intentions—baking, flower arranging classes, and trips to the farmers market to keep fresh produce in the house. Despite these considerable efforts, something inside of Cole seems to go rotten every winter and stays that way until spring begins to peek up through the snow. It Really Is is an auto-fiction comic based on the phenomenon of the winter slump, documenting the slow descent into a full-on winter-induced depression with humour, sensitivity, and talking geese.

IT REALLY IS is available for preorder from your fave local comic shop, independent bookstore, or from Conundrum Press online.

Cole Degenstein's IT REALLY IS launches later this fall, and below he shares some context behind this page:

"After a string of incredibly snowy days in Montreal, I decided to take a walk up Mont Royal- an attempt to beat my winter slump and soak up some afternoon sunshine. It was almost comical- I couldn’t have picked a day with more depressing weather to drag myself out of my apartment. The real world was in greyscale- stark white snow, a grey monument with a dull overcast sky to match.

I typically work in full colour- when presented with the opportunity to make a greyscale book for Conundrum 25, I immediately recalled this moment. This book likely wouldn’t exist without this day."

It's Sneak Peeks time! 👁️ 🫣 📚

We know not everyone has book launches, comic fests or signings available to them, so as we launch new titles we aim to give readers a little taste of those experiences with Conundrum's Sneak Peeks! Each artist pulls a few panels or pages from their book to dive into and share behind-the-scenes or deeper looks into their work.

Brandon Hick's ON THE BORDER launched this fall, and below he shares a section with reflections:

"Before they were compiled into a book, the strips contained in 'On The Border’ were a loose collection of diary comics made after moving to the border town of St. Stephen, New Brunswick.

With my background in journalism, I had a compulsion to record everything of note, be that small local events, small news stories, or even the general economic struggles that exist in this area. Quickly, however, I found that my favourite strips were those that looked at the subtle eccentricities one encounters while living in a small town.

Most of these comics are done pretty quickly—typically in an hour or two. But for this strip, I spent a week on it. I would finish a panel one day, then come back to it whenever there was a new development.

Hurricane winds split one of the trees in the park behind my house. As far as story material goes, this is a pretty thin concept. But the more you look, the more you see.

First, I noticed that the leaves were changing in a unique way. Then, I watched as the local kids discovered it, treating it like a theme park, or the set of a fantasy film that existed only in their heads. When the town finally came to cut the tree down, it made me sad, since I had developed this sort of unique relationship with it.

To me, this is emblematic of the book as a whole. You might not believe there is much to say about a small Canadian border town, but, again—the more you look, the more you see.”

— Brandon Hicks

About ON THE BORDER:
After moving to St. Stephen, New Brunswick during the height of the pandemic, cartoonist Brandon Hicks began illustrating a diary to record all of the strange occurrences and social mores of this sleepy border town.

On The Border collects the best of these stories, introducing you to a large cast of idiosyncratic neighbours, wild animals and strange antagonists. Learn all there is to know about the local traditions, bizarre habits and the changing economy of a small East Coast community.

Cole Pauls' WE SEE STARS ONLY AT NIGHT and Marianne Boucher's SURVIVAL OF THE GOODEST are both highlighted on CBC Books' October recommendations list!

About WE SEE STARS ONLY AT NIGHT:
Lłēge zedle s̱on nes̱it’īn (Tahltan for we see stars only at night) is a surrealistic landscape of Tahltan shapes, culture and motifs. Originally created for the Nanaimo Art Gallery’s group show “Gutters are Elastic” between July 15 to September 23, 2023, Pauls decided to expand the work into a full length book. Playing with the connection between land, regalia, performance and heritage, Pauls follows in the footsteps of Tiger Tateishi, Hironori Kikuchi and Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas with his dreamlike narrative.

About SURVIVAL OF THE GOODEST:
Sable has lived in a tight-knit community on a remote island for her whole life. With support from her parents, she’s trained for years to take up her position as the next Kerpathic, a messenger who travels through the dangerous forest to share news, medicine, and culture.
