Thursday afternoon June 6, 1968 at 4 o’clock in the afternoon, I was in the control room of KBIX in Muskogee, Oklahoma. The studios were in the 9th floor of the Barnes building downtown with a great view of the surrounding area. I was about to play the first record of my first shift on a radio station…still at it today, but nothing will ever surpass that first moment playing ‘U.S. Male’…

Watched the new Beach Boys documentary which dropped on Disney+ today. There were two things I hadn't previously seen in a Beach Boys documentary: a picture of Al Jardine's family, in particular his mom who forked over 4300 for the guys to rent instruments, and a picture of the home Mike Love grew up in, which looked much more opulent than the tract home the Wilsons lived in...
Other than that, we've seen this all before. The 2023 reunion at the beach where the first Capitol album cover was shot is played up in the trailer for the film. It consists of a few seconds of silent footage adding nothing to the film, other than they were there sometime last year. No context, no update. There's more in the trailer than in the film...
If you're a Beach Boy fan (I am), you'll want to see it, but there's not much to add to their story.
It has been told time and time again...just be grateful for the music...it remains timeless...

Happy 78th birthday today to Donovan Leitch…(yes, that’s his last name) One of the most pleasant lunches I ever shared, was with him in the mid 80’s. He was much more open and a lot funnier than I had expected…a pleasant interview doesn’t always happen, but in this case it certainly did…abd I was grateful for the opportunityPictured is my autographed copy of his biggest selling album, ‘Greatest Hits’… not a bad track on the disc…

This is the first chart single by Frankie Valli (Francis Castelluccio) as The Four Lovers. It was on Billboard’s Hot 100 for 5 weeks beginning on May 26, 1956. Six years later, they hit #1 for 5 weeks as The Four Seasons. Between 1962 and 1980, they put 53 singles on the Billboard chart, making them one of the most consistent hit making groups of all time…not including an additional 17 solo hits…
What a career, that continues to this day…
God bless Frankie Valli…

Duane Eddy passed away yesterday, surrounded by family at his home in Franklin, Tennessee. He was 86.
There are few guitar players who have been as influential in encouraging young guitar players to pick up the instrument and twang along. Even before learning a first chord, you could play along with Duane one single note at a time. His first top 10 hit, ‘Rebel Rouser’ was recorded at Audio Recorders here in Phoenix at 7th Street and Indian School, with a little sweetening added at Gold Star Studios in L.A.
In all, Duane Eddy had 32 chart singles on the Billboard chart.
Guitar players around the world owe a debt of gratitude to this man who created the twang in the Arizona desert…

64 years ago yesterday we lost one of most underrated rockers, Eddie Cochran. He was in England on his way back to the stated when he was killed in a car accident that also injured Gene Vincent abd Eddie’s girlfriend Sharon Sheeley. Most people will remember Eddie for his hits ‘Summertime Blues’ and ‘C’mon Everybody’, but my favorite (by far) was his last Anerican chart entry ‘Somethin’ Else’ which only reached #58 on Billboard’s Hot 100…
S***f Garrett told me was waiting at the LA airport to pick up Eddie for a series of recording sessions… what a loss…

Carl Perkins would have been 92 today...
Best known for his hit 'Blue Suede Shoes', he was a huge influence on The Beatles, especially George Harrison. At various times in their live performances, they performed 11 of his songs but only recorded 3; George sang lead on "Honey Don't" and "Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby", while Ringo took the lead on "Matchbox". All were recorded in 1964.
For a man who only had a single hit, he was much more influential than that. There's a lot to discover about Carl...start with his Sun recordings...
If you want to dig deep, Carl Perkins' album with NRBQ is still a favorite and highly recommended...
