RJ Ambassadors x Reckon FB Live
Reckon, an award-winning national news organization, and Represent Justice, a nonprofit dedicated to using storytelling to transform the criminal legal system, are excited to bring you a collection of stories created by formerly incarcerated leaders and storytellers across the country. These stories, produced by Represent Justice’s seven Ambassadors as the culmination of a yearlong storytelling training program, document the breadth and impact of mass incarceration — and those who work every day to dismantle it.
Over the coming weeks, Reckon will share this collection of short films, which covers everything from the immigration-to-prison pipeline, prison labor, parole reform, and so much more.
We’re kicking it all off with a Facebook Live conversation to hear directly from some of the Ambassadors about their experience creating these short films, and why storytelling can be transformative.

The Magic City Acceptance Academy opened in August and will graduate its first class this month. While it markets itself as LGBTQ-affirming, the public charter school accepts all students.
The students there say the school has changed their lives. “I [get] to be myself and…watch so many of my friends finally let go and not have to worry about the outside world,” one teen said about MCAA's prom night.
We spoke with two MCAA senior students about their experience attending the charter school and captured moments from their prom. Watch here.

Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors denies wrongdoing
Patrisse Cullors said farewell as leader of Black Lives Matter's non-profit organization nearly a year ago. But the last 11 months have been far from peaceful for the co-founder of the globally influential movement.
Amid persistent questions about how the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, Inc. spent tens of millions of donor dollars, and new speculation that she personally benefited as one of the most prominent BLM voices, Cullors is now defending herself, reflecting on her tenure as the foundation's executive director and discussing her future.

Scotty ATL on building his grill empire
Scotty ATL, aka the King of Grillz, says the South is the best place to have launched his business. "It's already part of the culture. People's parents grew up wearing gold teeth. My dad's had a gold tooth since I was little – you feel me?," he told Reckon.
At one point, after losing his shop, Scotty had to hustle to take his business mobile to serve clients, which boasts a roster of celebrities like David Banner and Big K.R.I.T, K. Michelle, Trouble, MizzTwerkSum, BlackBoe aka Quez, Trinidad James, Goodie Mob’s Khujo & Big Gipp, Jhonni Blaze and Killer Mike.
Scotty recently opened a second location, in Los Angeles, California.
What 12 Alabama parents, students, and advocates say about recent LGBTQ+ laws
Earlier this month, Gov. Kay Ivey signed into law changes to how Alabama schools and medical professionals treat LGBTQ+ students.
The new laws, passed on the very last day of the session, require students to use bathrooms that match their sex assigned at birth, specify K-5 teachers should discuss sexual orientation and gender identity in an “appropriate” manner, and criminalize healthcare providers who currently offer gender-affirming care.
