TV review: Ed Power enjoyed Dead and Buried on Virgin Media One on Monday night: 'It’s ludicrous, none of the characters behaves rationally, and the action bears only a passing resemblance to the real world. But isn’t that sort of escapism just what you want from a helping of early-in-the-week nonsense?'

Television: Colin Bateman adaptation of his Border-based play Bag For Life offers everything you need from a bit of Monday night nonsense

Eamon Ryan: The data suggests that the Atlantic Meridional Circulating System (Amoc) may switch off. If that were to happen it would bring about a dramatic drop in temperatures here, even as the rest of the world continues to burn

New studies say a dramatic drop in temperatures here could happen a lot sooner than previously feared

Given the money available, there’s not going to be “fiscal space for any drastic changes”, says Camilla Cullinane, a tax partner with KPMG, adding, for example, that “we won’t see the abolition of USC”.

The key focus will be on helping the so-called squeezed middle and reducing the marginal tax burden, says Cullinane

A pre-election attempt to win middle-class votes, with inheritance tax cuts, falling income taxes and housing on the agenda

Do you have to be a good rider to enjoy a horse holiday? No is the answer, as Gemma Tipton discovers when she travels to Arizona to spend time on a dude ranch. Some guests are experts, while for beginners, a couple of lessons is plenty to enjoy a slow ride where you don’t go above a walk. The western style of riding, with long stirrups and a loose rein, is easy to pick up, although like all the best things in life, it can take a lifetime to master.

A dude ranch holiday in Tucson, Arizona, is among exciting offerings for experienced riders and novices alike

Miriam Cooke's life changed when, as a young girl, she won a modelling competition which brought her to the attention of agencies in London, Paris and Milan, who immediately signed her up. Now in her 40s, Cooke says the industry has changed drastically since she was a teen. "The industry has started to embrace older women. Clothing companies are using older women – companies like Balenciaga, St Laurent and Loewe. It’s encouraging because it is not token."

The Irish academic, actor and broadcaster, has returned to her modelling career

EV first look: Earlier this year, at the Beijing motor show, BYD showed off a bright orange concept hatchback with massive wings and a race-car-esque bodykit, called the Ocean M Concept. Actual hard details on the car were staggeringly thin on the ground at the time, but it was clear that BYD was taking aim at the likes of the VW ID.3, the Cupra Born, and the Renault Megane E-Tech with a five-door family electric hatch. Now we know more

Seal 06 GT is the full production version of the Ocean M concept vehicle

Your personal finance questions answered: When we got married, we moved into a house that was owned by my wife’s mother which she told us we would be inheriting on her death. As we were looking to extend the property, we took out a mortgage in our names and, because she was the owner, my mother-in-law’s name, although it has always been paid by me.
Unfortunately, in a relatively short period, my wife died as did both her parents.
When I asked my wife’s remaining family about sorting out the house issue, they said initially they would get around to it but subsequently decided to “leave it the way it is”. What do we do?

Situation highlights danger of ‘informal’ arrangements on inheritance and importance of keeping wills updated

Property Clinic: A reader seeks advice on a neighbour's oak tree that sits up against their boundary wall and overhangs their garden. 'What are our rights and our neighbour’s obligations in terms of getting the tree cut vigorously back to the strong branches to prevent future danger? I am told I have no entitlement to cut it back further, nor do I want to bear the cost of doing so again. Surely they are responsible for maintaining their tree?'

Property Clinic: There are lots of weak, spindly branches overhanging our garden

Pilita Clark: Could ever more elephantine salaries for relatively inexperienced people, in the law or anywhere else, skew the way applicants are hired? Does it, for instance, encourage the selection of assertive, confident, forceful people rather than quieter, shyer rivals who are nonetheless more competent?

Elephantine salaries for young employees make smart hiring more imperative than ever

One of the world’s oldest continuously lived-in cities, Varanasi has long been a pilgrimage site. Hindus come to bathe in the sacred waters of the Ganges, to cremate a loved one or to die in the city; it is believed that being cremated in Varanasi will unshackle a person from the cycle of rebirth.

Every religion has its last rites, and this is what Hindus do

An Irishman in Spain: I hope things change and our daughter will not have to deal with prejudice and hate, but I’m sure my daughter’s Spanishness will be questioned by someone who wants to make her feel less. As someone who studied history, it never really occurred to me that fascism would be something I would have to deal with on a day-to-day basis.
