We recently published a story on the many historic buildings that are being lost in South Dakota. One of the casualties was the stately Hotel Ortman in Canistota, which has a distinguished history of hosting patients at the adjacent legendary Ortman Chiropractic Clinic. A story in the clinic's latest newsletter says a new hotel will be built at the same spot and it looks much like the old one — minus the structural deficiencies. It will include a restaurant and lobby. Something to look forward to!

Our frigid temperatures must be a challenge for our furred and feathered neighbors. We just spotted this coyote on the western outskirts of Irene ... notice the sparrows in the grass below.

Theron BigEagle caught this video of bull elk knocking horns by the North Shore area at Fort Thompson and shared it with us. This isn't the fall rutting season. Are they just being playful?

The Jan/Feb 2025 issue of the South Dakota Magazine has a section about our unique ‘town hall-style’ legislature celebrating a milestone.
George Mortimer of Belle Fourche, served from 1967 to 1987 and became known as the Will Rogers of South Dakota due to his homespun wit and wisdom. On one occasion, the legislature was considering a bill to control the coyote population because the varmints were killing sheep. A lobbyist for an animal rights group came to Pierre and proposed that the coyotes be captured, neutered and released.
Mortimer stared at her and said, “Ma’am, I’m not sure you understand the situation. These coyotes aren’t breeding the sheep, they’re killing them!“

A few years ago, South Dakota Magazine started a coffee shop in downtown Yankton — a sit-down-and-visit version of the magazine itself, with blow-ups of our covers on the wall. We discovered that running a coffee shop and a magazine aren't so different. Both are about creating community. This week Christa Lotz, a Mount Marty student, wrote a story about the coffee shop that speaks to the similarities.

Less than a mile from the Mount Marty University campus is our favorite small-town coffee shop, Muddy Mo’s. Muddy Mo’s sits close to the Missouri River—the same river it gets its name from—in a building that is roughly 140 years old. You would not know that from the inside, though. Their mod...

A golden eagle soars above the prairie in Wind Cave National Park, which is perhaps why a small rabbit is attempting to conceal himself in a bush as a bison passes by.
