Wow is it fun to get these kinds of letters from readers. Look at that group of kids all enjoying South Dakota Magazine!
"This photo memory popped up on my phone today from 2022 and reminded me that I've always wanted to write and say how much we love your magazine!
As a native of South Dakota I look forward to every issue. The magazine is a yearly gift subscription from my parents and is such a treat! Even though I've lived in Massachusetts for 15 years, I still feel like South Dakota is home. Flipping through the pages brings to life all I've know and loved about South Dakota and is something I get to share with my kids in every beautiful issue! We hope South Dakota magazine will always be something we find in our mailbox!" - Sarah M

It was great to receive the current issue of South Dakota Magazine in our mailbox this week; they graciously published an expansive photo essay from our new book, West River, as well as running one of the book's photos on their cover. The books are in the printing process as we speak, and they will be available in early October 2024. I will start offering presales on our website next month. We are very excited to be publishing photography books again after a 15 year hiatus! West River is a great value: hardcover, 264 pages, 178 photos, all about West River ranching culture and scenery for $50. Think Christmas!

Greetings! I’m working on a story about Georgia (Hoyt) Jipp, a young woman pilot who flew more than 150 mercy missions during the epic South Dakota blizzard of 1949. She was born in Philip in 1926, but I haven’t been able to find out much more about her family and personal history. If you know anything of Georgia or the family I would really appreciate hearing from you. Contact me at [email protected]

Locals say there is a bottomless sinkhole near the dock at which lake?
Although they are beautiful mountain waters, all of the lakes within the Black Hills are manmade. Horsethief Lake near Mount Rushmore and others provide serene spots for recreation of many kinds.

Nearly 50 artists took part in the Harvey Dunn Society's annual Painting on the Prairie event last weekend in DeSmet. After three days of painting outdoors amongst the landscapes that Dunn and Laura Ingalls Wilder captured in their works the art pieces were sold at the DeSmet Event Center. "We have so much fun," said artist Bonnie Brahms as she sketched an overgrown road scene. A youth workshop, live model painting, and a two-hour "quick draw" were also included.

Long ago we had a big sign on the lawn of our publishing offices in old Yankton. However, the posts rotted and the paint peeled, and finally a windstorm took it down. We always meant to replace it but print deadlines kept getting in the way. This summer, our circulation guru Kiki Felton said, "ENOUGH! We need a sign!" And she handcrafted it herself with the same love and joy that she puts into caring for your subscriptions. Thank you Kiki. As soon as the sign went up, people started coming up the sidewalk.

A 34-year tradition plays out each December in a tiny vintage store at a rural crossroads in southeastern South Dakota. Mike Pedersen has played the organ and piano for holiday singalongs for all of those years. "Where else in America can you find an event like this?" he asked before last weekend's performances. The Nora Store Christmas will continue for the next two weekends. For times and directions to the store, check out https://www.facebook.com/norasouthdakota. Future "The Wizard of Oz" author L. Frank Baum moved to Aberdeen in 1888 and opened Baum’s Bazaar, a store offering weary prairie families a wonderland of toys and exotic items. "American Oz," which debuts tonight on “American Experience,” delves into Baum’s time in the Hub City and how it shaped his most famous story. Tune in to South Dakota Public Broadcasting (and other PBS stations) at 8 pm Central/7 pm Mountain.
One of South Dakota’s greatest charms is that it’s not so much a state as a big, sprawling community of 850,000 people. Compared to other communities of our size, we’ve built an impressive collection of places unique to the world. Watch for a new design section called “Inside & Out” in every other issue of the magazine ... starting with the Jan/Feb issue. AIA South Dakota #architecture #design
