We first heard this in the summer of ‘94. Possibly the greatest summer hip-hop ever had. This was about 1 1/2 years after hearing rumblings of some group called Black Moon. Before you knew it, we entered this Duck Down vortex.

Black Moon came out swinging with back-to-back singles that were classics out the gate, but their album actually came out first (10/19/93). The problem is not many knew about it. It was on Nervous. It has shotty distribution and wasn’t readily available in many stores. After the success of those singles (Who Got da Props & How Many MC’s), most of us had tracked down Enta Da Stage.

Black Moon had such a remarkable run around this time because a year later, in 1994, they hit us with their 3rd single and arguably their best to date (I Got Cha Opin Remix). We couldn’t get enough of them. Buckshot was in such demand, Q-Tip & Spike Lee had to have him on the Crooklyn.

But then suddenly another song comes out from a completely different group affiliated with Duck Down, it was Bucktown. It’s recognizable within the first few seconds cuz of Born to be Blue, which was a commonly used record but not like this. Showbiz was a big fan of it using it multiple times. You heard it on Artifacts, LL, L.O.T.U.G. and Nice & Smooth used it on Blunts, but Bucktown felt like it was in a league of its own. DJ Evil Dee and Mr. Walt were entering a historic run when you factor in Poppa Large (Remix).

The b-side “Let’s Git It On” was good enough to be an a-side for most groups. Now, we’re on the 2nd group from Boot Camp Clik that we’re enamored with. We wanted more, but that Dru Ha is a strategic mickey ficky and soon we got hit with Black Moon’s Buck ‘Em Down (Remix) to end 1994. But guess what? 1995 started off with a bang because we got Dah Shinin. The long-awaited debut album from Smif-N-Wessun.

Depending on the day, you may have this as your favorite album of 1995 but you certainly have this among your top 5 along with Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, The Infamous, Liquid Swords and maybe Me Against The World or Livin’ Proof.

Next week we talk to these rude bwoys with the g***a plants on

On episode 149, we're honoring this 1993 musical masterpiece. This ATCQ classic embodies everything that made us me fall in love with hip-hop. It was pure perfection. An absolute game changer and the album that helped usher in the 2nd golden era.

Like what we’ve recently done with Paul’s Boutique, we strip this album completely and build it back using original samples in true TIP fashion. We reproduce this classic that’ll allow you to hear this album in a whole new way.

Get ready to relive 1993 all over again.

If we’re being honest, most remixes out there don’t compare to the original versions. That’s not to say there aren’t remixes that annihilated the originals like I Gotcha Opin (Black Moon), Shut ‘E Down (Public Enemy), One More Chance (Notorious B.I.G.), Nappy Heads (The Fugees), Soul By The Pound (Common Sense), On The Run (Kool G. Rap & DJ Polo), Poppa Large (Ultragmagnetic MC’s), I’ll Be There For You (Method Man) or Soul on Ice (Ras Kass).

Who could forget the classics like Flava In Your Ear, Paid In Full, Jinglin’ Baby, I Shot Ya, At Your Own Risk, Tonight’s Da Night, Mic Checka and Rock On as well?

There are some remixes we may prefer, like The World Is Yours (Q-Tip Mix) or It Ain’t Hard To Tell (Extra P Remix), simply because we’ve played out the original for decades and it’s the only way we can listen to the track anymore.

You also have variations of songs that aren’t don’t necessary feel like a traditional remix because sometimes they’re just not, like Shook Ones Pt. II.

The remix ain’t nothing new, but when it’s good, it’s great. There are certain producers like Diamond D, Buckwild, Preemo, Pete Rock, Large Pro, Da Beatminerz, DJ Spinna, Erick Sermon, Marley Marl, Mo Bee, Q-Tip and The Beatnuts, that when you see their name on the credits, you automatically know you’re in for a real treat.

I’ve learned that most of you are very well-versed in 90’s hip-hop. It’s probably why many of you follow this page, because we share that same knowledge and passion when discussing the greatest time in hip-hop.

I’ve compiled 25 remixes that aren’t necessarily better than the original version, but are great remixes I feel everyone should hear. There is no order, actually, it’s alphabetical, but make sure you use this as a checklist so you don’t miss out.

For our Patreon members, I’ve already uploaded all 25 tracks for you. Enjoy!

Depending on who you ask, most real heads will acknowledge that there are “2” golden eras in hip-hop. Some consider it one era but the debate usually revolves around the year it ended.

We can all agree 1988 might have been the most important in the genre. Yes, you needed 85, 86 and 87 to happen but in 1988, hip-hop reached new levels and produced some of the greatest pieces of work in music.

Some will say that era ended around the early 90s. Some say ‘91 before Dre dropped The Chronic and completely changed the game. Hip-hop started to shift and the west coast was finally getting its due.

I feel the 1st golden era was from 1988-1991.

All things considered, 1992 was an amazing year, it just wasn’t as amazing and the prior years and it certainly wasn’t as amazing as 1993. 1992 is very similar to 1996 when you compare the prior years.

The 2nd golden era was 1992-1996. Many will say hard stop after 1995 before Puffy did Puffy things to us listeners and created the “Jiggy” era. I still think 1996 was crucial thanks to Mobb Depp, Jay-Z, Nas, Ghostface, The Roots, The Fugees, Outkast, De La, M.O.P. & Redman.

1996 was the year it began to shift but gave us so many classics, it’s impossible to not include it in the golden era.

A tribute to ‘88 and ‘96 coming soon!

🚨11:00 AM EST🚨

Get ready to call because you’ll need a new windshield after these bangers on episode 147.

We’ve got joints from Ghostface Killah, M.O.P, Nature, Smif N Wessun, Pete Rock, Juggaknots, Ras Kass, Non Phixon, Cali Agents, Darc Mind and Vakill.

At the break, we discuss freestyle rappers. That’s right, we talk Harry Mack all the way to J.U.I.C.E. and why we consider them the Harlem Globetrotters of Rap.

We attempt to understand Dre’s distain for certain battle rappers and white rappers and Kevlar does his best Aesop Rock impersonation. We also talk about some recent movies and shows like Tires and decide Midnight Marauders is the next album to get the 360-Treatment like Paul’s Boutique.

Next up is our new music episode with .

There are dates we’ll always remember. Some good, some bad like 9/11, but these dates are ingrained in our memory. With music, these are some pretty, pretty, pretty good dates that immediately come to mind.

On September 24, 1991, quite possibly the greatest date in music history, Nirvana’s Nevermind, A Tribe Called Quest’s The Low End Theory and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Blood Sugar S*x Magik released.

In ‘93, we have a real special one, again A Tribe Called Quest’ with Midnight Marauders and Wu-Tang Clan’s Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) dropped on November 9th. A few weeks later, on November 23rd, Snoop dropped his debut Do******le. I picked that up along with Del’s magnum opus, No Need For Alarm.

There are many great dates that come to mind, like February 13, 1996. I walked into Best Buy, when they actually sold CDs more than anything else in the store and walked out with All Eyez On Me, The Score and Mad Skillz’s From Where??? debut.

Earlier that year, who could forget November 7th, when Liquid Swords and Goodie Mob’s Soul Food came out on the same day? If you had a little extra coin, you even bought Erick Sermon’s Double or Nothing album and later regretted it. We all have those purchases in our collection.

But today is a day I’ll never forget. April 19, 1994, 10 days after my birthday, I got a gift that still brings me joy 30 years later. On this date, Nas gave us the greatest debut album of all-time, Illmatic. Shout-out to Shyheim for dropping AKA the Rugged Child, which I also bought that day.

This day, hip-hop changed for the better. Thank you .

Since Puff is currently dominating our news feed, let speak on the jiggy era. I fu***ng loathed that time in hip-hop. Eventually, ended up tolerating a lot of it, but it was my least favorite era. That's why when we had that indie revolution in the late 90's of freedom fighters, I championed the f**k out it. Again, if you were alive to experience the era's in hip-hop from 88-91 and then 92-95, you experienced something magical.

Unfortunately, the influence that Puff had lingered well into the new millennium. That's why when groups like Slum Village, Blackalicious, Blu & Exile, People Under The Stairs and Little Brother dropped, I couldn't get enough. It was refreshing. It was reminiscent. It was pure. It was fun. It was everything I missed in hip-hop once the 2nd Golden Era ended.

With age, our patience tends to lessen and we gravitate towards a specific sound or era. We may stray. We may attempt to be open-minded, usually to appease family or friends at time, but we always need a musical detox.

This episode is just that.
