"I think the way that we look at our role as the art museum is that we are responsible to our constituents. We have a different set of responsibilities, and that's serving the community in which we operate. It can be our immediate community as within the Wits Art Museum, within the university and within Johannesburg. You can just keep broadening it from there.
We are answerable to these communities that we serve. There's also a responsibility to conserve the tangible heritage that we have in our collection. We have a responsibility to take care of these artworks that we have in our collection. We have a responsibility with our exhibitions to strive to have them reflect the communities that we serve."

"I've been seeing the city change over time and what I find very fascinating is how this culture of graffiti operates in the city and yet not everybody can see it. It's right in your face, it's in public spaces but for various reasons people just walk past it.
Some people say 'Wow, that's cool' but they cannot decipher it and yet there is a language that is happening.
There are messages that have been communicated, so for me as a person that uses the city and that practices the art of graffiti, there's so much meaning behind that.
You know, like for us, it's a thing that's alive, real and current.
And yet for a lot of people who just drive past it, walk past it, and they don't register. It's the multiplicity, the layers and the coded nature of our reality, because for me the city is my reality."

"In South Africa, the role of an art fair is slightly different and maybe for many reasons because we come from a history of segregation where there's a segment of society, mostly black people were not very active in the art world and I think our culture is very different to Europeans and Americans.
We don't have a lot of institutions and many of us didn't grow up going to museums. We still don't have a lot of museums in Johannesburg.
So it's a very different culture. And I think what the art fair does play a role in for the city is educational on one side, because people get to learn about what is art. How is art presented? Who are our artists, what's our history, where we are today and where we're going? At the same time, it plays a role of activating the commercial side of buying and of collecting."

"There had been a couple of museum shows, but David was resistant to the idea. And in true David fashion would stonely tell us off and say, 'Don't call me an artist! I'm not an artist. I'm a photographer and I'm busy documenting what's happening in this country. It's like building a history.'
We said, but of course, but they are brilliant photographs and we do think there is an audience.
There is a place for the exhibition of these works. It took most of the '90s to persuade him of that."

Storm Janse Van Rensburg - The Museum EP05
"Joburg in the mid-nineties was an incredibly exciting place. These immediate moments post-apartheid, but also like within the lack of space. It's Market Theatre galleries, which was led by Stephen Hobbs at the time. I was a gallery assistant, my real first job, and it was the only real experimental space that I think existed in South Africa.
It was a very special time there, you know, like we could take risks and do things that maybe couldn't happen in other spaces or maybe can't even happen now. And I don't want to be nostalgic about these things, and it's also not the purpose. But I think what was important for me was to understand the way that institutions function and can function that's very much about how it plugs into its kind of immediacy, you know, like its immediate context."

"As an introduction to the season, we thought it might be necessary to interrogate the term, the art world. What exactly is it and what does it mean? Who does it include and who does it exclude? We are trying to unpack these concepts and understand some of the nuances within this environment where we find ourselves in, many of which play a role in shaping the cultural narratives that we carry with us.'

"I don't think awards are a validation of anything. Awards shouldn't be the reason why we make art, I don't think about an award when I make artwork. I really think about what is the reason behind me making the art.
That being said, it would be remiss of me to not mention the fact that it's always a wonderful feeling to get validated for the kind of work that you make."

"I think there's still a lot of different biennales, but the one that really stands out or that artists believe makes a big impact in their career is the Venice Biennale. But it's still quite contentious because who gets to go to this thing?"

Episode 5: Banele Khoza on the Gallery
"I think what we've done differently is when we invite an artist to participate
in the show, we are not the directors of how the show is going to unfold.
We always invite the artists to direct us into how they wish to see the space completely reimagined. So I think since literally the opening, we've
completely turned the space around.
Like you'll never find it the same colours as you found at the show before, and I think it's just to encourage the audience to come back over and over again."
