Seeing the first thunderstorm of my trip to Saskatchewan lead to me standing outside in the pouring rain at 1am for an hour and a half but I didn’t get any great shots of the lightning… The second thunderstorm I was shooting from inside a car which was much more comfortable. People always talk about Vancouver having bipolar weather, but they have not witnessed Saskatchewan. I have seen it change from bright sun with open skies to a flash flood with thick, ghastly clouds in about an hour, and the thunder hits so much harder than back in BC. This second storm was even better, it was crazy hearing the reverberations of the pounding storm and shrieks of lightning pierce through the bullets of rainfall, and the lightning was so bright it would appear to be daytime again for a split second. It was truly amazing to witness the lightning, but it is a pain in theee to capture a good photo of it. I had to keep my shutter speed relatively quick, so I bumped my ISO to 12,800 to compensate, resulting in some noisy pictures… I don’t remember how many misfired pictures I took in order to get a few good shots, but it was above 1000. Felt like I was playing a reflex-based video game; as soon as I heard thunder I would prepare myself, and as soon as the sky flashed I would quickly press and hold the shutter, taking a rapid lot of pictures in hopes that lightning might appear in frame. I was at it for almost 2 hours, until I was finally satisfied with a couple shots.
