B**g Go boosts Alas Pilipinas Women's Volleyball Team with financial support through the PSC

Senator Go's sports advocacy goes beyond supporting elite athletes. He is also dedicated to promoting grassroots sports development throughout the country. He believes this approach will establish a strong foundation for future generations. This advocacy aligns with his mantra: "Get into sports, stay away from drugs to keep us healthy and fit."
A key initiative in this effort is Republic Act No. 11470, which Go authored and co-sponsored. This law established the National Academy of Sports (NAS) in New Clark City, Tarlac, to provide specialized education and training for aspiring student-athletes.
Additionally, Go led the passage of Senate Bill No. 2514, known as The Philippine National Games (PNG) Act which he principally sponsored and is one of its authors. Approved on the third reading by the Senate, this bill seeks to institutionalize an inclusive platform for national sports competitions, extending to the grassroots level to help identify and develop sports talents if enacted into law.
Senator Go has also successfully pushed for an increased budget for sports programs as Vice Chair of the Senate Finance Committee. This funding aims to significantly improve Filipino athletes' preparation, training, and competitive performance on the international stage while launching effective programs to cultivate the talents of young and aspiring sports enthusiasts at the grassroots level.
Go then thanked the PSC, led by PSC Chairman Richard Bachmann, Commissioners B**g Coo, Edward Hayco, Walter Torres, Matthew Gaston, and Executive Director Paulo Tatad, as well as Philippine National volleyball Federation SecGen Don Caringal who was also present among others, for their continued support and shared advocacy.
“Isa lang po ang pakiusap ko sa PSC, sa ating buong commission, kung ano po ang pangangailangan ng athletes natin, kung may reklamo sila o pangangailangan sila, tugunan agad natin, suportahan natin. Kasi mas importante talaga yung morale support,” urged Go.
Through these initiatives, Senator Go continues to support Filipino athletes, ensuring they receive the recognition and assistance they deserve as they strive for excellence on the international stage.
“Isang beses lang tayo dadaan sa mundong ito. Kaya anumang tulong ang pwede nating ibigay sa kapwa, o anumang karangalan ang pwede nating ialay sa bansa, ay gawin at ibigay na natin ngayon,” he said.
Earlier that day, Go was in Nueva Ecija. As an adopted son of the province, he assisted barangay workers and indigents, and inspected the evacuation center he supported in Santa Rosa. He likewise gave support to more indigents in Lupao.
“Bilang inyong Mr. Malasakit, patuloy akong susuporta sa ating mga atleta at patuloy akong magseserbisyo sa inyong lahat dahil bisyo ko ang magserbisyo at naniniwala ako na ang serbisyo sa tao ay serbisyo sa Diyos,” he ended.

RUNRIO, DOT tie up for Philippine Half Marathon Series

With the goal of pushing the country as a premier sports tourism destination, RUNRIO has strengthened its partnership with the Department of Tourism (DOT) as it aims to further highlight the country’s beauty through running.
The Philippine Half Marathon Series will see 10 races across iconic cities nationwide as it encourages runners to enjoy the Philippines’ scenic views while still promoting a healthy lifestyle.
“This partnership marks a significant milestone in our efforts to position the Philippines as a multi-dimensional tourist destination,” said DOT Usec. Shahlimar Hofer Tamano during the signing of the memorandum of agreement last week.
“This collaboration is more than just an agreement on paper. It is a shared vision for the future where we aim to leverage the natural beauty of our islands, the warmth of our people, the thrilling excitement of sports to create unforgettable experiences for athletes and enthusiasts from around the world.”
Gatorade Manila Half Marathon will commence the series on June 23 at SM Mall of Asia Complex with 9,000 runners already registered to participate.
There will also be half marathon races to follow in Baguio, New Clark City, Imus in Cavite, Legazpi in Albay, Cebu, Iloilo, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, and Dapitan in Zamboanga.
“We strive to push the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of running and we’re happy to announce a partnership which will take this dream to new heights,” said RUNRIO founder and CEO Rio de la Cruz.
“We want to showcase these iconic races because we want to promote local tourism. Moving forward, we want to attract more runners from different countries to visit these cities, different run, different city, different experience. We want to promote our culture for every city. We want to make it bigger with the help of DOT.”
Aside from the flagship 21K races, there will also be 10K and 5K categories to further attract newcomers to embrace the sport leading up to the Manila Marathon on Oct. 6.
De la Cruz is also looking at making the Philippine Half Marathon Series as one of the company’s flagship events, on top of the bevy of races that RUNRIO organizes, among them the HOKA Trilogy Run Asia and the upcoming Pride Run which will be held on June 22.

COLLEGIATE PRESS CORPS AWARDS

The brightest stars from the 2023-2024 athletic season will be recognized anew as the Collegiate Press Corps (CPC) holds its Annual Awards Night presented by San Miguel Corporation on June 17 at the Discovery Suites Manila in Ortigas, Pasig.
Unlike the 2023 edition which feted three seasons in one due to the COVID-19 pandemic though, this year’s ceremony will only focus on the achievers of the recently-concluded UAAP Season 86 and NCAA Season 99.
For the first time ever, standouts in women’s basketball and men’s volleyball will be feted with well-deserved recognitions in the second endeavor of the united CPC, which merged the UAAP and NCAA Press Corps upon the return of all collegiate sports in 2022.
Among the new awards by the CPC are Player of the Year, Mythical Five and Coach of the Year on the distaff side as the group puts premium on the rise of women’s hoops for this year’s rites backed by Discovery Suites as official venue partner and Jockey as minor sponsor.
Volleyball, which saw a phenomenal uptick in gate attendance over the past few months, will also see new honors such as the Men's Volleyball Players of the Year, both from the UAAP and the NCAA.
Volleyball Coaches of the Year, likewise, in both the men’s and women’s divisions from the country’s premier collegiate leagues will be named.
A total of 23 awards are to be handed out by the print and online scribes covering the beat, led by the staple honors such as the Men's Basketball Player of the Year and Mythical Five.
Also in the fray are the Men’s Basketball Coaches of the Year and Women's Volleyball Players of the Year plums, which were introduced last season as one of the new CPC awards before the inclusion of men's volleyball and women's basketball this time around.

OLYMPICS BOUND VOLLEY TEAM, TO PLAY IN VNL IN MOA

VOLLEYBALL Nations League (VNL) Men’s Pools Week 3 action erupts starting Jun 18 at the Mall of Asia Arena in another unprecedented busy month for Philippine volleyball.
“The Alas Pilipinas Women provided the highlight late last month but the momentum for Philippine volleyball continues overseas and at home with the VNL just around the corner,” said Ramon “Tats” Suzara, president of the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF).
The Rizal Memorial Coliseum took a golden bronze hue with Alas Pilipinas’s third place finish in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Challenge Cup for Women—the country’s best-ever finish, and the first medal, in an Asian level volleyball competition.
“The Alas women’s achievement was a highlight reel yet the PNVF’s focus is multi-pronged,” said Suzara, referring to the various Alas Pilipinas squads campaigning overseas simultaneously.
The men’s national team are in Bahrain for the AVC Challenge Cup for Men, the Under-18 squad is in Thailand for the 22nd Princess Cup SEA U18 Women’s Volleyball Championship and 5th Asian Women’s U18 Volleyball Championship and the Alas women are in Daegu City, South Korea, for a Friendship Tour in connection with the Philippine Independence Day Celebration.
The beach volleyball teams are in Switzerland for the beach pro tour following two weeks of AVC and FIVBA pro tour tournaments at the Nuvali Sand Courts by AyalaLand.
Come July, the Alas Pilipinas women will be back in action this time in the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Challenger Cup which the PNVF is hosting from July 4 to 7 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
But world-class play will run for six days at the SM Mall of Asia Arena where Paris Olympics-bound France, USA, Germany, Canada, The Netherlands and Japan, plus Brazil and Iran take the floor for the VNL Men’s Pools Week 3 Action.
“Just like in the last two years when we hosted the VNL, the elite league is again expected to attract the avid Filipino fan to elite volleyball action,” Suzara said. “With Japan superstars Yuki Ishikawa and Ran Takahashi reuniting anew for Japan, the MOA Arena is expected to be filled to the rafters once more.”
