Really looking forward to my talk on Saturday February 17th! If you're interested in forensics and true crime, come and spend some time with me at the Vancouver Police Museum and Archives, the same building where Inspector Vance solved so many of our city's major crimes in the first half of last century.

I'm excited to be doing a talk at Vancouver Police Museum Saturday February 17 about Inspector Vance, Vancouver's first forensic investigator. I'll be talking about some of the sensational murder cases that Vance solved (and one that he didn't) between 1914 and 1949. You'll also be able to see some of the actual equipment Vance used, and some of the material that turned up during the research for my book Blood, Sweat, and Fear: The Story of Inspector Vance, that is now part of the museum's latest exhibit "Becoming Vance." With thanks to Nanaimo Museum and gift shop for this fabulous review of Blood, Sweat and Fear! If you haven't already, do plan to make a trip to the museum when you're over there, it really is a Vancouver Island treasure.

📖 Attention all spooky book lovers! For the month of October, we would like to offer you short weekly book reviews on some of our spookier titles—all available in the Gift Shop!

🎃 Look out for these every Thursday in October, and pop into the Gift Shop (on your way into the gallery for more Halloween content of course!) and check out our bookshelf for yourself! Our first review is on Eve Lazarus' "Blood, Sweat, and Fear."

Blood, Sweat, and Fear by Eve Lazarus is the story of Vancouver's first forensic investigator, John F.C.B. Vance, and a thrilling dive into some of B.C.'s most sensational twentieth-century murder cases.
If you're interested in well-researched detective stories and true crime, but enjoy the flow of a novel, this book may be for you! Lazarus, a reporter, author, and host of the Cold Case Canada podcast, has compiled literal boxes of evidence and years of research into this compelling story of a scientist turned forensic investigator and the cases and victims he sought justice for.
Blood Sweat and Fear is a biography, a story of the birth of forensic science, and an account of Vancouver's turbulent history all in one. Historical images including mugshots, maps, newspaper clippings, and pictures of inspector Lance and his family can be found on almost every page of this detail-packed book.

⚠️ A word of warning, given the nature of forensics, this book is not for the squeamish.

Blood, Sweat, and Fear: a true crime podcast

Blood, Sweat, and Fear: The Story of Inspector Vance is a 12-episode true crime podcast based on my book with the same title: http://evelazarus.com/books/blood-sweat-and-fear/ John F.C.B. Vance was known internationally as Canada’s Sherlock Holmes. During his forty-two-year-career, he helped detectives solve some of the most sensational murder cases of the 20th century. Vance was constantly called to crime scenes and to testify in court because of his skills in serology, toxicology, fi****ms examination and autopsy.

Vance frequently brought his expertise in trace evidence and explosives to solve dozens of robberies, earning him front-page headlines. In fact his skills and analytic abilities were so effective that in 1934 there were seven attempts on his life, and for a time, he and his family were under constant police guard from criminals afraid to go up against him in court.

Each episode will follow a major crime that Vance helped to solve using cutting-edge forensics. Listen here: http://evelazarus.com/category/podcasts/ or on your favourite podcatcher, links which are listed at the side of the page.
