Poetry changes at the EP Foster Library

Dear friends,
I made the announcement last Thursday night that Thursday Night Poetry is no more. I too was shocked. I found out when I met with the librarian late in the afternoon. So, it was a shock for all of us. I have hosted and supported a weekly poetry reading since 1991. Before that I did weekly music and poetry for a couple of years. So, it's my 30th anniversary, at least. And I didn't exactly choose this, but I have accepted it (not that we have a choice), although, still, it feels something like an amputation. The library has offered us a once a month slot in the afternoon. I really hope we can muster a quorum for the once a month events.

Here are the good things about the once a month upcoming: we will be able to have it during the day so people who are hesitant about driving at night might be more likely to come. We will still be able to have zoom. We will hopefully be able to muster a quorum so that those in the room feel the community. It's always been a great zoom community.

I have had a very full day on Thursdays with meeting up with my daughter, another long meeting and then getting down to the library and jiggering the hybrid. On Fridays, I work all day with students and come back exhausted. It will be easier on me physically not to go out on Thursday night.

Maybe we can re-constellate our regular zoom people on second and fourth Wednesdays at the Thousand Oaks reading. I would certainly zoom in to that one to see you all. Instead of only once a month, that would make 3x a month and help with TO attendance.

Our first Sunday meeting will be on Nov. 5th at 5:00. There will be another one in December TBD. After that, we hope to put together a regular schedule, maybe Saturday if we can get it, maybe earlier in the afternoon like at 3:00, hopefully.

It is a sad time, but I'm trying to look at it as a time of renewed possibility. - Phil

So, What if the Chimes are Silent?
Ñ Holaday Mason

It is Sunday. Look how the tiny
unarmed brown birds in the pomegranate
shudder, so small they’d fit together
in my palms, yet they shake the entire tree.

See how the shady side of the fountain
has gathered moss so thick it might be
clay one could mold into a strong vessel.

It’s always a surprise, how the yellow rose
vines rising from the barren root,
claw thorn & bud over the neighbor’s wall,
(the one who’s never liked me)
until flowers consume the redwood fence

the way you wrapped around me
& together we become an original
carved from old scars. My red
cup balances in the dirt, steam weaves
from coffee in the orbit of morning.

You quietly play the crooked guitar
so don’t see me point to a knot of seagulls
crossing the split-open nectarine clouds,

spider webs loosely drift through
the budding red maple until the gulls -
part into three, unite, part, unite
again, caught in some invisible airstream

the way prayer sounds into & through,
the way just sitting with you in
the dawn & plaiting your hair seems
everything one needs to stay alive.
