BASKETBALL PRE-EMPTION ON 90.5FM CANCELLED (10/10/24)

We were informed that due to budget constraints at the Gannon University Athletic Department caused by a decline in sporting event attendances (thank you inflation), today’s previously scheduled basketball pre-emption on WERG 90.5FM has been cancelled. The college’s Athletic Department has opted to broadcast home basketball games only this semester once football season comes to an end.

Being that we weren’t notified about this change until only this past Thursday, our FM show along with the POLKA CAROUSEL SHOW with Todd Zaganiacz will NOT be airing this afternoon. We have opted to air music in the 3-5pm Eastern time slot. The FM edition of Kenny Olowin’s HOT AMERICAN POLKAS will air as scheduled.

Todd Zaganiacz will air a special Jammer only edition of his show this afternoon from 3-4pm Eastern (2-3pm Central) over at the Polka Jammer Network.

There is one basketball pre-emption that will take place on Sunday, December 1st as WERG will broadcast Men’s play by play with a tip off at 4pm Eastern time.

BASKETBALL PRE-EMPTION on 90.5FM - 10/10/24

We were informed that basketball season has started over at Gannon University. There are 2 pre-emptions to our polka block this Fall:

10/10/24 - Women have a 3:00pm game which will pre-empt the 1st 2 hours of our polka block. Kenny Olowin’s show will be joined in progress at the conclusion of the post game show barring that game going into overtime.

12/1/24 - Sunday Doubleheader which will pre-empt the 1st 2 1/2 hours of our polka block. Again, Kenny Olowin’s show will be joined in progress.

It is with a heavy heart to announce that Major Mel Himes, long time polka DJ from Erie, PA, passed away last night due to sepsis caused by an untreated shoulder infection. He was 66 years old......one month shy of what would have been his 67th birthday. (June 11th)

Our deepest condolences go out to his girlfriend Kristine, and his entire family. In accordance with his final wishes, he will be cremated. Please keep them in your thoughts during this difficult time.

Congratulations to the Gannon Women’s & Men’s Basketball teams on winning the PSAC Championship! First time in the college’s history that both teams won the Championship in the same season.

This is the first time the Men have won the PSAC Title since 2015. They now go to the NCAA Semifinals.

UPDATE: Both teams lost in the first round of the NCAA playoffs. Their season is over. Our polka block has resumed.

WERG POLKA BLOCK PRE-EMPTION (3/10/24)

As expected, the Gannon Lady Knights basketball team swept through the playoffs. They’ll be playing tomorrow at 3pm ET to defend their PSAC Championship.

As a result, the first 2 hours of our WERG polka block will be pre-empted with Kenny Olowin’s show on 90.5FM joined in progress at the conclusion of the post-game show.

We’ll keep you posted on the Men’s team as we may be pre-empted on March 17th. (They are currently undefeated in the playoffs.)

UPDATE (3/14/24 7:30pm ET): Looks like we’re in the clear as far as pre-emptions this season. However, there will be NO Madhouse show on WERG this Sunday. We will return the following Sunday.

WERG BASKETBALL PRE-EMPTION (2/25/24)

It looks like both the Gannon U Women’s & Men’s Basketball teams will make it into the playoffs.

This Sunday, February 25th, the first 2 hours of our WERG polka block will be pre-empted. Kenny Olowin’s WERG show will be joined in progress upon conclusion of the post game show.

There may be pre-emptions on March 10th & 17th if both teams win all the playoff games. If any team loses, their season is over.

UPDATE: As expected, the Gannon U Lady Knights Basketball team won their semifinals game and will be playing tomorrow afternoon for the PSAC Championship.

GANNON LADY KNIGHTS MAKE SEMIFINALS

We were informed today that the Gannon Lady Knights Basketball team has made it into the semifinals for the 2nd year in a row. If they win that game tomorrow afternoon, they go to the PSAC Championship game which starts at 3pm on Sunday. It is scheduled to be broadcast on both 90.5FM WERG & their stream, pre-empting the first 2 1/2 hours of our polka block.

BASKETBALL DOUBLEHEADER (12/18/22)

We have been informed of a change in the Gannon University basketball schedule for this Sunday. There will be a basketball doubleheader (1pm & 3pm ET) which will pre-empt the first 2 1/2 hours of our WERG polka block.

Game 2 is expected to end at around 5:30pm ET (barring that game going into overtime), after which Kenny Olowin’s WERG show will be joined in progress.

This is the last Sunday game of the regular season. Barring any of these teams making it into the playoffs, our polka block should be in the clear.

We were informed by Chet LaPrice of 90.5FM WERG that the station has resumed coverage of Gannon University Lady Knights Women’s Basketball.

UPDATE (11/13/22):

(All Times Eastern)

November 13th - 5PM Start

The POLKA CAROUSEL with Todd Zaganiacz will air as scheduled at 3PM. CHAINSAW’S POLKA MADHOUSE will not be airing; we will be playing canned polka music up to the pre-game show at 4:45PM. HOT AMERICAN POLKAS will be pre-empted tonight.

November 20th - 1PM & 3PM DOUBLEHEADER

The 3-5PM portion of our polka block will be pre-empted. HOT AMERICAN POLKAS will be joined in progress around 5:30PM barring the game going into overtime.

December 18th - 1PM Start

We expect our polka block to start on time at 3PM barring the game going into overtime in which case programming will be joined in progress.

March 5th, 2023 - IF the team makes it to the PSAC Championship Game.

Once we get through these games, our polka block should be safe.
