counters each day makes the humor of The Born Loser universal. Thanks to our lovable loser, Brutus, slipping on the banana peels of life for us, we can laugh at those frustrating situations we all face. Art Sansom created The Born Loser in 1965. Art began his career in comic art after World War II, working in the “bullpen” for Newspaper Enterprise Association, drawing various strips when their regular cartoonists were ill or on vacations. In 1951, Art was awarded his own strip to draw, a new SciFi adventure strip called Chris Welkin, Planeteer. After fourteen years, Art decided he wanted a change of pace--he had an idea for a humor strip featuring common losing scenarios--The Born Loser. Initially, The Born Loser featured a random assortment of characters placed in universal losing situations. As the strip evolved, one of those characters kept reappearing by popular demand--lovable loser Brutus Thornapple. Before long, Brutus became the central character of The Born Loser. Soon, other characters were created to interact with Brutus. Gladys Thornapple is Brutus’s wife. She loves Brutus, but is prone to backseat driving, whether or not they are in a car. Their son, Wilberforce Thornapple, is well-meaning, but he is a chip off the old block and doomed to follow in Brutus’s footsteps. Ramona Gargle is Brutus’s Mother-in-law. She is the type of mother who feels no man is good enough for her daughter, especially Brutus! Rancid Veeblefester is Brutus’s Scrooge-like boss. Veeblefester constantly berates Brutus’s work, but still finds him indispensable, if only because he works so cheaply. Last, but not least, is the devilishly mischievous Hurricane Hattie O’Hara. She is Wilberforce’s best friend, but she enjoys nothing more than tormenting Brutus. Chip Sansom grew up watching Art create The Born Loser in his studio in their family home. Chip soaked it all in and soon knew the comic strip better than anyone, other than his father. In 1977, Chip began an apprenticeship working on The Born Loser for his father. Art taught him the ropes of every detail of producing the comic strip. The two worked together for fifteen years until Art passed away in 1991. By that time, Chip was prepared to fully assume the production of the comic strip. Chip continues to produce The Born Loser in the studio he shared with his father. Although the comic strip has inevitably evolved over the past twenty-five years, keeping it relevant to today’s readers, Chip remains faithful to the writing and drawing styles Art taught him. As a tribute to his father. Chip still signs both of their names to every comic strip he produces. The Born Loser appears daily in over one thousand newspapers, in more than thirty countries, translated into multiple languages, as well as on the Internet at www.gocomics.com/the-born-loser. Universal Uclick distributes the comic strip by arrangement with United Media. The Born Loser has twice won the National Cartoonist Society’s prestigious Best Humor Strip of the Year Award and has been nominated for the award four additional times.

For the last day or two, some people have had trouble linking to the daily Born Loser strip on GoComics through the Facebook link I post each day. GoComics is working hard to fix this issue which seems to be a Facebook interface glitch. In the meantime, in addition to my normal post, I will post a screen shot of each day's strip on The Born Loser page so anyone experiencing the problem can read The Born Loser each day. Here is the strip for May 21, 2024.
