Debris In Turn 3 Brooklyn’s Most Popular NASCAR Podcast. Matt and Dan give their take on the latest in NASCAR news from the Cup series down to the local short track
(1)

Show hosts and cousins, Matt and Dan Edwards have been around NASCAR and other forms of motorsports all their lives. Both of their dad's raced at Freeport Stadium and Islip Speedway on Long Island. Having not had the chance to see races at both tracks before they shuttered, they grew up going to races at Riverhead Raceway and and annual trips to Florida to "visit family" but really go to the Dayto

na 500 and Firecracker 400. For years they sat on the backstretch and went into the pits at Riverhead after the races, listening to all the great racing stories from back in the day and watching Cup races on TV. After years of being a spectator, they decided to put their love of racing into the form of a podcast, where they can discuss their love and hate for the sport that they have passionately followed since they were kids.

A young Matt living the dream and waving a checkered from the flag stand circa 1989 or 90.

His little guy won’t get to see the big race thanks to Mother Nature, but he does get to see Mickey Mouse tomorrow, and that’s pretty cool!

By the 1985 season both Islip and Freeport had already closed and so the Street Stocks moved over to Riverhead Raceway.

Dad was driving the 60x Outlaw Late Model around New England at this time. His Buick Street Stock he drove at Islip was sold to Roger Oxee pictured here.

If we made the Divisional lineup.

We covered the NASCAR divisions in our previous post. Now let’s take a look at the Enduro divisions.

Based on some intel a Blunderbust and Street Stock merger is not a viable option so Street Stocks will be part of this list and remain the top track division.

Mini Stocks are a somewhat new addition to the lineup, debuting in 2017 and made up of 4 or 6 cylinder passenger cars with minimal modifications including a 6 point roll cage and fuel cell, everything else remaining stock. It’s an inexpensive way to get into stock car racing. I’m glad that Riverhead has them and they stay number 2 behind Street Stocks.

The Enduros of the past were essentially a rolling demolition derby. 100 cars lined up 3 wide from turn 3 to the front stretch. When the race started the leaders would reach the tail end of the field before they even moved and then carnage ensued.

While the enduros today can still be chaotic, the drivers out there want to race, not just bang up cars. Enduros should just be re-branded as Bombers, a nod to the novice division from Freeport Stadium. Just like the Freeport Bombers and current Enduros, keep the caution free format and their races a 20 or 30 lap feature. Run a limited schedule on Saturday nights only, racing after the main event and drop the Sunday afternoon shows, except for opening weekend and Championship weekend. A limited schedule and shorter races would benefit novice drivers, giving them quality seat time while also saving money on repairs.

Since there are three enduro divisions differentiated by engine size and vehicle type, the 4/6 Cylinder Gut & Go Enduros would become Bombers, the 8 Cylinder Enduros would be Grand Bombers, again a nod to the old Grand Enduros which are now the Street Stocks. Last and not least the Truck Enduro would be the Truck Bombers.

Tour Type Modifieds and Late Models are the pinnacle of NASCAR weekly and touring racing. Modifieds have long been the premier division at Riverhead and race pretty much every week including going head to head with the Modified Tour drivers twice a year.

Late Models have slowly been making a comeback. It’s time for them to get more races and share in the glory to become the top full fender division and number 2 behind the Modifieds.

Crate Mods have grown exponentially since being introduced six years ago and are currently the number 2 division. A limited version of Tour Type Modifieds, they should be the 3rd highest division behind LM.

Similarly Chargers are the younger sibling to Late Models and should be resurrected as the 4th highest division.

Super Pro Trucks below Chargers. Historically SPT drivers have said Chargers were very similar to them when they were around.

The dreaded ‘M’ word. Merge Blunderbusts and Street Stocks into one Street Stock division. The rules they are nearly identical. Blunderbusts have evolved so much over the last 40 years from their humble beginnings as a strictly stock novice division of super large Cadillacs and Lincolns into full fledged race cars.

I was all for the Late Model/Charger merger and can see how detrimental it was to LMs. It had to do with low car counts and how similar CHs were starting to look like LMs, however under the hood and lap times they were totally different. With Blunderbust and Street Stock rules being so similar and there being healthy car counts in both divisions, I think it would be a good thing and streamline the path from the lowest full time division up to the Modifieds.

Figure 8s have been a staple at the track since 1969. Those drivers are crazy and the division needs to stay.

The schedule was released last month which got me thinking…

Ever since took over ARCA, the main series has been pretty solid. The East and West series however, especially the East needs a major shot in the arm.

For the 2024 season the West has a decent 12 races with only 1 combo race with the main series. The East on the other hand has 8 races. Yes you read that correct, 8 races, 5 of which are combo races with the main series. Five Flags, Nashville Fairgrounds and Flatrock are the only stand alone races. The tracks on the East schedule should really look something like this.

Stand alone Races
Stafford Motor Speedway
Thompson Speedway
Oswego Speedway
Flat Rock Speedway
Jennerstown Speedway
South Boston Speedway
Hickory Motor Speedway
North Wilkesboro Speedway
Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway
Florence Motor Speedway
Five Flags Speedway
New Smyrna Speedway

Combo Races with Main Series
Dover Motor Speedway
Iowa Speedway
Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park
Milwaukee Mile
Bristol Motor Speedway
