Jams for Man Episode #62 Chris Bopst (Gwar and Alter-Natives)

Chris Bopst grew up in Northern Virginia and played in two high school bands, Art by Accident and Puke on Will, before getting into six car accidents and moving to Richmond for art school. Bopst went on to form Gwar and wrote a good bit of their first album, Hell-O, then left the campy metal behind to dedicate himself to the Alter-Natives. He is one of two people to have been signed to both the iconic SST and Dischord labels. He has also put out records as a bassist with the Holy Rollers, Mao Tse Helens, and had a critically acclaimed music radio show and podcast.

We lost another great one. Very saddened to hear of the passing of Byron Stafford. Makes me appreciate the decision to document this scene even more because we’ll always have his words and music.

Byron Stafford moved from Roxbury, MA to Reston, VA, dropped his stage name Baby B in favor of Illy the Kid, and met T.J. Fobbs. He gave T.J. the moniker Coc...

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of Justice Johnson. He was a great family man and an excellent producer, who put Reston on the map for hip hop.

I was incredibly saddened to hear about the passing of Nathan Crouch after his brave battle with cancer. He was a great musician and sweet guy and had so much more to offer this world. I am so glad that I got a chance to connect with him as part of this project. He was an important member of the Northern VA music scene of the 90s as founder of the band Lugnut. I hope that you will listen to this conversation from three years ago and remember him fondly and seek out his music. Our deepest condolences to his family.

https://youtu.be/wYJwJqr7XLQ

Nathan Crouch formed the band Lugnut with Marc Williams on vocals, Brian Ballard on bass, David Swartz on the other guitar, and a series of drummers, Clay We...
