It’s an absolute pleasure to announce ‘Soulcake’ (feat. Shumba Youth), the second single from the forthcoming long-planner ‘Perpetual Musket’ by ‘the ongoing artist-in-residence and de facto Night Czar of Breadminster’, Elijah Minnelli.

‘Perpetual Musket’ fuses dub reggae with traditional folk, reimagining classic standards with a cast of renowned reggae vocalists ( Little Roy, Earl Sixteen, Shumba Youth, Joe Yorke) to breathe new life into traditional and folk songs. In this instance, contemporary dancehall titan Shumba Youth enlivens the old traditional ballad ‘A’ Soulin’’, a song about a Souls’ Day winter ritual where the poor would knock on the doors of farm owners and the rich in a tradition that is believed to have influenced both carolling and trick or treating. Shumba’s rhythmic dexterity refreshes the song with a unique energy.

‘Soulcake (feat. Shumba Youth)’ is available now for streaming and download across digital platforms.
‘Perpetual Musket’ will be released on 21st June and is available now for pre-order via the link in the bio.

30/04/2024

Further to having acquired the exclusive rights to the music from the Breadminster County Council’s ‘Partnership of the Perpetual Musket’ songbook (see last post for details), we are delighted to welcome the somewhat elusive Elijah Minnelli to the FatCat fold – ‘the ongoing artist-in-residence and de facto Night Czar of Breadminster’.

Elijah has announced his forthcoming album ‘Perpetual Musket’ (out 21st June), released a first single from the Lp – ‘Vine & Fig Tree (featuring Little Roy)’, and shared a string of live dates including an album launch.

Born of an equal love of outsider folk, and the interwoven musical lineages of South America and the West Indies, Minnelli stands out by balancing influence with a unique irreverence. ‘Perpetual Musket’ fuses dub reggae with traditional folk, reimagining classic standards with a cast of renowned reggae vocalists to breathe new life into traditional and folk songs. Each track is paired with a live dub version that shines a light on the instrumental adaptations of these traditional melodies.

Veteran Little Roy lends his tone to ‘Vine & Fig Tree’, an explicitly anti-war song originating from the Old Testament, Shumba Youth enlivens ‘A’ Soulin’’, the old ballad about a winter ritual of the poor knocking on doors of farm owners and the rich (a tradition believed to have influenced carolling and ‘trick or treating’). Earl Sixteen emotionally imparts Peggy Seeger’s ‘Lifeboat Mona’ – the story of a lifeboat disaster in 1959, and Bristol’s Joe Yorke sings ‘The Wind & The Rain’ – a tale of weather and weariness from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.

“Elijah Minnelli’s rendition of ‘Lifeboat Mona’ is truly excellent. It is a moving mixture of percussion, harmony and vocals that knows how to tell a story. Vocalist Earl Sixteen does it JUST RIGHT. All the elements of the song, as I wrote it back in December 1959, are still there. Thanks to all for doing it so well.” – Peggy Seeger

Keeley Forsyth will support her forthcoming album The Hollow with live shows scheduled at ICA, Rewire Festival in DenHaag and Bristol New Music New Music. She will be supported at the ICA by special guest Louis Carnell, whose new album on MUTE Keeley features.

Keeley’s live shows are animated with a powerful physicality and a focus on the moment that feels close to performance art. She has left an indelible mark on stages around the world, including Unsound, Dark M**o, Le Guess Who?, CTM, and Donau. A magnetic presence, she transcends regular stagecraft and live conventions to craft an immersive ceremonial experience that can at once feel ritualistic and Beckettian, drawing the audience into a world of her own manifesting. Within this, Keeley forges connections that are simultaneously fierce and tender, invoking primal, animalistic energy with moments of ethereal softness. She defies easy categorisation, embodying spoken word and deftly manipulating her sonic landscape, refusing to be confined by conventional artistic boundaries or expectations.

Keeley Forsyth will headline at the ICA London on Thu, 23 May 2024 presenting her 3rd studio album 'The Hollow' (out 10 May on 130701).

Tickets available here - https://www.ica.art/live/keeley-forsyth

Building on the stripped back aesthetic of Debris (2020) and Limbs (2022), Forsyth returns with ferocious and tender vocals that shape her statement string arrangements, thudding drums, kinetic hits, and filmic synthesisers.

Described by Pitchfork as an ‘arid and beautiful debut’, by Uncut as ‘astonishing’ and The Sunday Times as ‘one of the most remarkable in years’, the reception of Keeley’s debut album Debris was then confirmed when she conjured Limbs. Both drew unanimous critical praise prompting comparisons with Nico, Nick Cave, Portishead’s Beth Gibbons, Aldous Harding, Anohni and even Scott Walker.

Forsyth’s live return – and her 130701 debut – is bound to once again bewitch audiences and critics with the raw beauty of her soundcraft.

‘Horse’, the first single from Keeley Forsyth’s new album ‘The Hollow’, is out now. Head over to the 130701 YouTube channel to see the full length official video, beautifully directed by Ross Downes - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdefRnKcAy4

‘’The final film from Hungarian auteur Bela Tarr left an indelible mark on me. Its themes of duty, poverty and domestic repetition weighed heavily for days after viewing. After the images, in stark black and white, left my thoughts the sound remained. Mihály Vig’s music captured the essence of struggle. The composition rises and falls throughout the whole film, becoming a character whilst complementing beautifully what we see without ever resorting to illustration. He composed a feeling of physicality, complexity and truth. Some months after watching The Turin Horse I set about trying to make something simply as an experiment. Scott Walker had used Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal as inspiration for a song on Scott 4, so I decided to use a similar tactic albeit using Vig’s composition and reimagining it. With some help and over some months we managed to contact Vig and eventually received his blessing.‘’

You can now listen to ‘Horse’ and pre-order the album on vinyl (including Dinked, FatCat and standard editions), CD and digital download – https://130701.lnk.to/keeleyforsyth

Keeley Forsyth has today announced her new album ‘The Hollow’, along with releasing a first single and video ‘Horse’, and a series of live date has today announced her new album ‘The Hollow’, along with releasing a first single and video ‘Horse’, and a series of live dates.

The bleak and foreboding landscape of Keeley's locale inhabits this, her third album,. The moors, visible from her studio window, impact upon a music that feels made of these places: windswept, rain-soaked and blinking through the low-lit landscape. It is here through the gloaming mist that the storm breaks and the fox tears at the throat as the Red Kites circle to scavenge whatever’s left

‘The Hollow’ derives from discovering a long-abandoned mining shaft. Alluring and hazardous – the past lurking within and haunting the present. A connection to time that places us within it, facing what is gone and what may come. But also, perhaps that time has no concern as to whether we're here or not.

‘Horse’ is out now and ‘The Hollow’ is available now to pre-order on vinyl (including Dinked, FatCat and standard editions) , CD, digital download and streaming across all platforms .

Keeley will perform live at ReWire Festival (ND) and Bristol New Music (UK) in April, and at the ICA (London) in May. More dates to follow.

"I roamed, capturing vocals in different spaces, forging a connection as I sang. I imagined battling against an invisible force, facing down challenges, pressing on, determined to breathe in this. I chose to refuse to be shackled by the chains of language here, surrendering instead to the primal dance of my body's urges. My mouth moves in sync with the shallow breaths of my gut, and impulse guiding my every wordless utterance” –

We are excited to welcome singer, composer and actress Keeley Forsyth to the 130701 / FatCat fold. A frequent presence on primetime TV since the mid-'90s, over the past few years she has forged an unusual parallel career as a unique and uncompromising new presence in contemporary music.

Described by Pitchfork as “arid and beautiful”, by Uncut as "astonishing" and The Sunday Times as "one of the most remarkable in years”, Keeley's debut LP 'Debris' (2020) and follow-up 'Limbs' (2022) drew unanimous critical praise, prompting comparisons with Nico, Beth Gibbons, Aldous Harding, Nick Cave, Anohni and even Scott Walker. It's often stated that no one else is making music quite like this.

A sought-after collaborator, she is currently working on new projects with Ben Frost & Robert MacFarlane, Teho Teardo, and Matthew Bourne. She has provided vocals for Louis Carnell; remixed both Gazelle Twin and Quin Quis; and has soundtracked Maxine Peake’s directorial debut.

We’re looking forward to sharing more about this very soon…

On this day back in 2012, The Twilight Sad released ‘No One Can Ever Know’. Previewed with ‘Kill It In The Morning’ and lead single ‘Sick’, the band’s third LP marked a sonic shift towards something more spontaneous but sparser, colder and more militant.

Freshly inspired by a listening diet of Cabaret Voltaire, Can, Liars, Magazine, Autechre, and Public Image Limited, the band turned to a dark, synth-heavy sound; the result shared themes and sonic space with the most innovative offerings from Depeche Mode, The Cure, or even Nine Inch Nails.
Recorded at The Pool in London under the guidance of Andrew Weatherall, the band experimented with vintage analog synths - borrowed from producer Ben Hillier – to work on the core sounds they wanted, finding further inspiration in the distinctive production style of innovators like Factory Records’ Martin Hannett and Cluster‘s Conny Plank.
