Town Hall Meeting in Tamale Highlights Government Achievements and Future Plans

Tamale, Northern Region – October 8, 2024 — The Ministry of Information, in partnership with the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), hosted a pivotal Town Hall Meeting and Exhibition at the GNAT Hall in Tamale, showcasing the government's achievements over the past eight years.

In her opening remarks, Information Minister Hon. Fatimatu Abubakar emphasized the importance of accountability in democracy. "This Town Hall Meeting was organized because we understand the people and their needs," she stated. "All Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) are here to showcase the government's work in their respective areas. Accountability is the bedrock of our democracy."

Hon. Fatimatu expressed her gratitude to Northern Regional Minister Hon. Shani Alhassan Shaibu for his hospitality, setting a collaborative tone for the event.

Highlighting infrastructure development, Hon. Shani Alhassan Shaibu noted significant advancements in the Northern Region under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's leadership. “Over the past seven and a half years, we have made remarkable progress in physical infrastructure and human resource development,” he affirmed. “These accomplishments have improved lives and reinforced the President's vision for our nation.”

The Minister detailed several flagship programs that have positively impacted education, health, agriculture, roads, water, sanitation, hygiene, and rural electrification. He also commended improvements in logistics for security services.

On education, Hon. Shani outlined the government's commitment to enhancing access and quality. "The Free Senior High School policy has significantly increased educational access, especially for low-income families," he explained. “I am proud to announce that the Northern Region topped the national transition statistics with a 98% rate under this policy for the 2023/2024 academic year.”

Deputy Minister of Agriculture Hon. Alhaji Hardi Tufeiru addressed concerns regarding the impact of dry spells on farmers. Speaking on behalf of Agriculture Minister Hon. Dr. Bryan Acheampong, he reassured attendees about the safety of Ghana’s food system. "We are implementing measures to mitigate the devastating effects of these dry spells," he said. "When government interventions roll out, we expect food prices to decrease."

He elaborated on agricultural support initiatives, stating that 118,000 metric tons of fertilizer and 5,133 metric tons of seeds will be distributed to 800,000 smallholder farmers nationwide. "Every farmer will receive two bags of NPK and one bag of Urea," he noted, adding that commercial farmers would receive up to 50 bags of NPK and 25 bags of Urea each.

With anticipated production increases of 350,000 metric tons of paddy rice and 770,000 bags of maize within 120 days, the meeting underscored a unified commitment to improving livelihoods in the Northern Region.
The Minister of Agriculture further announced that a GHC 66 million interest-free loan is currently being processed to support farmers across the country. This financial assistance aims to bolster agricultural productivity and improve the livelihoods of farmers in the region.
Effective October 10, 2024, poultry farmers will receive targeted support in the form of feed and vaccines. This initiative is designed to enhance poultry production and ensure the health of livestock, addressing critical needs within the sector.

Deputy Minister of Finance, Hon. Dr. Alex Ampaabeng, provided an optimistic outlook on Ghana's economic recovery. "Ghana's economy is back on track," he declared, highlighting the progress of the One Village One Factory initiative, which is gradually gaining momentum. He expressed confidence that as the industrial sector grows, unemployment rates will decline.

Dr. Ampaabeng urged local and foreign investors to consider Ghana as a viable destination for business. "My message to those companies and all investors who are willing to come to Ghana is simple: we are ready for you," he stated. He emphasized that the country boasts:

• Robust physical infrastructure

• Stable electricity supply

• A digitized economy

• Solid financial systems

• Exceptional human capital

The Deputy Minister's remarks underscored the government's commitment to creating a conducive environment for investment and economic growth, reinforcing confidence in Ghana's potential for development.

The Town Hall Meeting served as an essential platform for communicating these initiatives and fostering dialogue between government officials and citizens, furthering the administration's goals of transparency and accountability in governance.
