NZ HOUSE of SONG Te Whare Waiata O Aotearoa Songs that resonate with us. We aim to create a Music-eum, a TV doco series, schools program and sum My ideas fell on deaf ears. Many will have passed.

In 1990, as Head of Entertainment at TVNZ, I attempted to gather support for a NZ Music Hall of Fame. I moved overseas with TV and Music, now I live between the USA and NZ. I tried again in 2002 in Nelson, no interest from NCC; 'we have WOW, why a NZMHOF?' A year later, Nelson lost WOW. Ten years later, I bought a retreat in my teenage town, Whangarei, and with the help of other like-minded music

folk, and interest from WDC, set about making my vision become a reality. I thought 'Music is not about Fame. If fame comes to a music-maker, that is a bonus. Its about The Song.' And 'Fame' is an anachronism in NZ. NZers tend to consider 'fame' in terms of Sport. That said, many in our Hall Of Song will not be famous, but deserve to be. Many deserve to be in the 'official' NZMHOF, many will not be inducted into it in their lifetimes. We plan to honour NZ's music makers thru the music they made, the places they played and the joy they spread. From the earliest days of Music in NZ to today. The emphasis will be on those who achieved more than 30 years ago, but we will also applaud the likes of Lorde. Music knows no boundaries. Music is the great healer. It helped end a war in Vietnam. It helped bring down a wall in Berlin. And if The Bible is to be believed, it brought down the walls of Jericho! Music is as old as mankind. The first musical instrument: the voice. The second: the drum. Our Hall Of Song will celebrate singers, players, those behind the scenes AND 'the songs'. Songs made famous in NZ, whether written here or overseas; from 'Pokareana' to 'Royals', we will honour them all. That folks, is my aim in a nutshell. I welcome your support, opinions and advice. Without an audience, there is little need for song. We have an audience of over four million, and a world waiting to hear our music. Our songs will live on forever...
