We are Baker Mayfield Days Away from .
Baker Mayfield won Oklahoma’s sixth Heisman while producing the highest passing efficiency rating in FBS history. He is the first Heisman winner to begin his career as a walk-on athlete since the NCAA instituted athletic scholarships in the 1950s.

He is also one of seven players to log three top 5 Heisman finishes, joining Glenn Davis and Doc Blanchard of Army, Doak Walker of SMU, Archie Griffin of Ohio State, Herschel Walker of Georgia and Tim Tebow of Florida.

Mayfield was born on April 14, 1995, in Austin, Texas. He starred at Lake Travis High in Austin, leading his team to a 25-2 record as a starter while winning the 2011 4A State Championship. He finished his prep career with 6,255 passing yards and 67 touchdown passes.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound dual-threat quarterback was passed over by almost every BCS school for a scholarship, so Mayfield chose to walk on at Texas Tech in 2013, where he immediately won the starting quarterback position. In his first start, he passed for 413 yards and four touchdowns. He finished his freshman season with 2,315 yards and 12 touchdown passes. Mayfield then chose to transfer to Oklahoma, where he sat out the 2014 season due to transfer rules.

Mayfield took over the starting job for the Sooners in 2015 and made an immediate impact, passing for 3,700 yards and 37 touchdowns while rushing for another 405 yards and seven scores on the ground. He finished fourth in that year’s Heisman race.
He came back in 2016 with another fine season, setting the NCAA record with a passer rating of 196.38, with 3,965 yards through the air and 40 touchdowns. He took his first trip to New York as a Heisman finalist, finishing third behind Lamar Jackson and DeShaun Watson.

Mayfield saved his best season for last, throwing for 4,340 yards with 41 touchdowns and just 5 interceptions while leading the Sooners to a 12-1 record and a berth in the College Football Playoff. He once again set the NCAA record for passing efficiency with a rating of 203.76. He won the Heisman easily over Bryce Love of Stanford, tallying 2,398 points to Love’s 1,300. He joined Billy Vessels (’52), Steve Owens (’69), Billy Sims (’78), Jason White (’03) and Sam Bradford (’08) as Sooner Heisman winners.

He is the first senior to win the award since Troy Smith in 2006 and the first player to win the Heisman after transferring directly from another FBS program since Doc Blanchard did so in 1945.* *courtesy of Heisman dot com

We are Davey O’Brien days away from Texas Christian's "Slingshot" Sammy Baugh had torn the Southwest Conference apart in 1936 while a sophomore understudy named Davey O'Brien awaited his turn. Few felt this 5-7, 150-pound mite of a man could ever fill the shoes of the legendary Baugh. However, O'Brien proved a spectacular successor to the TCU quarterbacking throne. Like Baugh, O'Brien was destined to drive enemy defenses daffy with his incredible passing feats. Dutch Meyer, who coached both quarterbacks at TCU, compared his prized pupils, saying: "Baugh was a better all-around player than O'Brien, and a better passer, but as a field general Davey has never been equaled. He was the finest play selector I've ever seen." In 1938, O'Brien led TCU to an undefeated season and a national championship. He won the Heisman and Maxwell Awards and threw 19 touchdown passes. O'Brien played two years with the Philadelphia Eagles, 1939-40, and was All-Pro and Rookie of the Year, 1939. He quit football and spent 10 years as a special agent for the FBI, and in 1950 returned to Fort Worth to work in the oil business. He was born June 22, 1917, and died November 18, 1977. The Davey O'Brien Award, for the best quarterback each year, is named for him.* *courtesy of the College Football HOF

We are Steve McNair Days Away from .
Arguably the greatest player in Alcorn State history, Steve McNair rewrote the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and school record books en route to winning the 1994 Walter Payton Award as the best player in the FCS. "Air McNair" deservedly becomes the first Brave player to enter the College Football Hall of Fame.

A 1994 First Team All-American, McNair finished third for the Heisman Trophy, which is tied for the highest finish ever by an FCS player. The 1994 Eddie Robinson Trophy recipient as the nation's best HBCU player, he remains the all-time total yards leader in FCS history with 16,823, and his 14,496 passing yards were a national record until 2018. The only four-time SWAC Offensive Player of the Year in history, McNair led Alcorn State to conference titles and FCS Playoff berths in 1992 and 1994. Those same two seasons, the four-time First Team All-SWAC selection led the nation in total offense with 4,057 yards in 1992 and an FCS single-season record 5,799 in 1994. McNair's other career FCS records include 41 games with 200 passing yards, 32 games with 300 passing yards, 15 games with 400 total offensive yards and nine games with 500 total offensive yards.

Alcorn State's all-time leading passer with 14,496 career yards, McNair also owns school records for career completions (958) and passing touchdowns (119). During his remarkable 1994 senior campaign, he set single-season Braves records with 5,377 passing yards, 356 completions and 47 passing touchdowns. Some of McNair's top performances from that season led to Alcorn State single-game records, including 587 passing yards against Southern, eight passing touchdowns against Chattanooga and 52 completions against Youngstown State (an FCS Playoff record). The 1991 SWAC Freshman of the Year also ranks third in school history with 2,327 rushing yards. The two-time Dean's Scholar is enshrined in the SWAC, Black College Football, State of Mississippi Sports and State of Tennessee Sports halls of fame.

The third overall pick in the 1995 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers, McNair played for the Oilers/Tennessee Titans from 1995-2005 and led the franchise to a berth in Super Bowl ###IV. The three-time Pro Bowler and 2003 NFL Co-MVP finished his pro career with the Baltimore Ravens from 2006-07. McNair is a member of the Titans/Oilers Hall of Fame, and the franchise retired his No. 9 jersey in 2019.

McNair left a lasting impact in the community through the Steve McNair Foundation, which served underprivileged youth through education and civic opportunities and raised more than $1 million for charities. He organized a highly successful relief drive following Hurricane Katrina, and he trained thousands of kids at youth football camps, covering the costs for nearly 70% of the attendees. McNair received multiple awards for his work in the community, including the NFLPA's Byron "Whizzer" White Award. He died on July 4, 2009, at the age of 36.* *courtesy of the College Football HOF
