We are finally past security and at our terminal so I feel safer to speak. Sunday night we were at Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. We were to be there Saturday thru Tuesday. After dinner Sunday evening, we got to our room on the ocean/pool side where our patio is and there was a young girl on our patio crying and appeared intoxicated. My husband and I were giddy and carefree at that point. We were hysterical laughing because we had just accidentally gone in to someone else’s room, realized it, tried to get back out via the patio, the door jammed and we had to book it out the front door. We thought omg that was hilarious and scary and we ran to our room and there she was. So I asked her if she was safe and if she was ok and she said “yes I safe”. We went inside and made a video about our weird experience and how now it was even more bizarre that there is a girl on our patio. We give her some time to gather herself and were about to ask her to leave when she knocked on the sliding glass door and asked me to come out in very broken English. That should have been a major red flag that she wanted me separate from him. I understand some Spanish but don’t speak it well at all and she appeared to only know a few words of English so it was challenging but I gathered that her friends left her and she couldn’t find her room. She kept pointing inside my room and saying things I couldn’t understand. Then she was on FaceTime or video call with a man who spoke English but they were speaking to each other in Spanish. At this point she describe to him what I looked like and where I was sitting in relation to her and that we were by the pool. He then asked her to get my room number. I then texted my husband who was inside to send someone. He called the lobby. Eventually a security guard came around but we later found they didn’t send him it was just coincidence. He spoke no English. We eventually flagged down a couple from Miami that we had met at the pool earlier to help us translate. The husband is from Cuba and immediately knew what was going on and said you guys need to get your stuff get on a plane and leave and emphasized to my husband this is not a game and is not to be taken lightly. They became increasingly scared and angry when the security guard wasn’t listening to what we had to say. And apparently the girl told him we invited her to our room. Then he scanned her band and found her room. But she refused to go to her room. At this point there was a man pacing and lingering around the bathroom and common area. Pacing pacing pacing watching us and the situation. In and out of the bathroom. My husband and the husband of the couple went to the bathroom to see what he was doing and noticed he didn’t have a wrist band. The husband alerted the security he had no band. The security asked him what he was doing and he said he was an employee. Not in worker uniform no name tag nothing. So the husbands asked no, what does he do here and without investigation the security says I don’t know cleaner I think. At this point the husband from Miami is irate and the wife is terrified. The girl is still lingering around and the man is as well a couple hundred feet from our room. We kept asking why aren’t you doing anything? Then we asked did the office send you and he said no. So they never sent anyone to help us. The couple was on their way to the office to make their own complaints and concerns and also wanted to leave. While we were trying to hash this out, before she left, the girl was sitting on patio too, talking to a man and the husband from Miami said guys she’s not speaking Spanish right now. I don’t know what language that is. So she was speaking multiple languages as well. And she definitely understood English as well and she was definitely not intoxicated. The wife of the couple also said that she saw the girl was taking pictures of us in selfie mode. They were just as scared as we were. We finally got a cart to come pick us up and take us to the lobby after we gathered all of our belongings and were ready to leave. It’s now around 11pm. We get to the concierge and they are no help at all. They gave us other stories and said they found that she was with a man who was abusing her and he ran and they can’t find him. They didn’t offer to change our rooms and they simply packed up their belongings and left as their shift was over. We told them repeatedly that we didn’t feel safe. We called the dept of state and the embassy and were told they can’t help. We needed to call police or get a taxi to the airport. Michael checked us out and we didn’t know what else to do but pray and hope the taxi was legit. We did make it to the airport it every thing was closed. So we couldn’t get an earlier flight. We found a Hilton right at the airport and stayed there. We did feel safer there but honestly everything was terrifying because you just don’t know their reach. Are they in communication with the taxis or hotels? You just don’t know. I think that covers most of it. The embassy did call us yesterday to check on us. But ladies, you have no one out here to protect you. And once they identify you as a target, it’s a wrap. You’re already in danger at that point. We filed complaints with the booking company who acted quickly and the resort is denying everything. They said we failed to notify them of any problems and failed to do an early check out. These resorts are not safe. They are bullied and coerced by the cartels and they can do nothing.

I wrote something down in a journal and crossed it out …I reworded it to empower myself verses being a victim. It’s interesting how, simply writing out my thoughts, changed my perspective.
