A subcontractor at the Husab Uranium Mine, Eagle Night Watch Security, has been accused of not complying with an affirmative action report submitted to the Employment Equity Commission.
Workers allege that Eagle Night Watch gives them one-month contracts without benefits, contrary to what the company stated in the report: that they are permanent employees with benefits.
A representative of the Revolutionary Union, Tuhafeni Petrus, and some workers say they discovered in 2022 that Eagle Night Watch Security is involved in fraudulent activities.
They further claim that third-party payments to the Social Security Commission and NamRA are never paid, despite their payslips indicating that they have been deducted.
The company has denied the allegations, saying the evidence provided in the affirmative action report was maliciously misinterpreted.
In a letter, Labour Consultant Izaaks Prinsloo indicated that medical aid is an optional benefit that employees may choose to join or not.
Regarding third-party payments, she said no specific cases have been brought to the company’s attention other than sweeping generalisations, but if there are discrepancies, they will be investigated, she added.

FCC Monitorship Threatens KPFA & Pacifica, Rescue Pacifica Press Conference
https://youtu.be/9zzRErxOVJ8
Rescue Pacifica held a press conference at KPFA on July 31, 2024 to warn about the FCC monitorship of KPFA and Pacifica and the dangers with the rise of fascism.
The press conference participants reported that the members of The Protectors group who are on the majority on the KPFA Local Station Board had filed a complaint with the FCC to monitor WBAI and have tried to physically shutdown the WBAI Affilate of Pacifica.
These delegates as a result of their complaint with the FCC forced KFPA to pay a fine of $25,000 and also ended up in a full monitorship and oversight of the entire foundation and all stations including KPFA. This has led to a dangerous situation in which KPFA has been unable to have a summer fund drive in a time of dire need. The PNB management which is controlled by The Protectors has also laid off all the staff of the Pacifica Archives which threatens the historic archives of the Pacifica Foundation.

1/3/22 Workers’ Struggles in Southern Africa
Pacifica’s Covid Race & Democracy
By COVID-TF - January 3, 20226

https://covidtaskforce.pacifica.org/2022/01/03/workers-struggles-in-southern-africa/

We begin today’s show with a growing struggle of unionized South African truck assembly workers who are fighting for a standardized pay rate.

Hundreds of members of the National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa, also famously known as NUMSA, have been on strike since October 15th at First Automobile Works, a Chinese state-owned company in Port Elizabeth. The company says they should not be bound by the Motor Industry Bargaining Council contract for assembly line workers manufacturing cars because they are manufacturing only trucks.

NUMSA Eastern Cape regional secretary, Mziyanda Twani has said “We want the company to contract instead with the Automobile Manufacturers Employers Organization and its National Bargaining Forum, as do BMW, Ford, Isuzu, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Toyota, and Volkswagen.

Twani said pay rates for truck assembly workers that are set by MIBCO are lower than those paid to truck assemblers by companies in the Automobile Manufacturers Employers Organization. “For FAW pays 39 rand per hour, while other assemblers pay 99.”

***

The General Industrial Workers Union of South Africa General Secretary John Appolis talked about the critical strike at the Clover Dairy company owned by the Israeli billionaire Werthiem family.

***

Next, In Namibia last September 9, union branch leaders of the Rossing Uranium Mine were fired by the state-owned China National Nuclear Corporation. They are still fighting to get their jobs back and the Namibian government has shut off water and electricity at the home of their lawyer Hewat Beukes.

***

South African trade unionist and researcher David Hemson who talked about the role of Chinese investment in Africa with Pacifica’s Steve Zeltzer.

***

Western governments along with their loyal media and think tanks warn that China is colonizing, exploiting, and forcing Africa into a debt trap. Is this true? Or is it Cold War propaganda? What is China’s actual role in Africa and how does it compare with the West’s? Rhania Khalek of Breakthrough News spoke with two leading African leftists: Kambale Musavuli, an activist, writer, and analyst with the Center for Research on the Congo, and Mikaela Nhondo Erskog, a researcher at the Tricontinental Institute, a member of the organizing committee of No Cold War, and an educator and researcher with Pan Africanism Today, which works with organizations like NUMSA in South Africa.

Broadcasting May Day Around the Globe

WHAT IS INTERNATIONAL WORKERS' DAY?

May 1 is the original Labor Day, also known in most countries as "International Workers' Day," or "May Day."

May Day originated in the United States... but is not widely recognized here. Our official Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September. In 2019, U.S. Labor Day is on September 2.

On May 1, 1886, the 8-hour workday was scheduled to be implemented. Predictably, this new law met with resistance from certain business owners. In Chicago, this resistance was met by a strike to demand the 8-hour day and other labor rights.
