Black Ivory Tower is a website turned print magazine on extreme and obscure music. Focusing initially on black metal, the publication has since broadened its scope to other genres, such as folk and post-rock. With its quality-over-quantity approach, Black Ivory Tower is updated sporadically, and it does not participate in the usual promo circus. Most articles are reviews, although the occasional e
ditorial makes its way into the magazine to expand on ideas behind the music. Reviews are exhaustive and in-depth, and aim to offer a better artistic understanding of the music rather than reviewing it from a consumer's point of view. After 3 years of digital activity, the first physical issue of Black Ivory Tower, subtitled 'Interbellum', was published in July of 2014. Limited to 100 copies, it sold out relatively quickly, although some distributors still have copies in stock. Two new issues are currently planned: issue #2, 'Time of Heroes', will focus on traditional/folk music and related forms of music; issue #3 'Resurrection of Heroes' will concern itself with the manifestation of traditional spirit in modern forms of music. Meanwhile, the website serves to support the magazine activities with information and promotion, and as a home for any article that does not fit the formula of upcoming print editions. Black Ivory Tower stands for cultural criticism, traditional views of art, and a sense of humour unusual for its style.
