in 1984, SPLC attorneys filed the civil suit Donald v. United Klans of America after the 1981 lynching of 19-year-old Michael Donald of Mobile, Alabama.

The 1987 verdict marked the end of the United Klans. This same group had beaten the Freedom Riders in 1961, murdered civil rights worker Viola Liuzzo in 1965 and bombed Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church in 1963.

On this day in 1975, the Sweet single “The Ballroom Blitz” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #100 (June 14)

Another from the long production line of hits from the crack songwriting team of Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman.

The song was inspired by an incident on 27 January 1973 when the band were performing at the Grand Hall in Kilmarnock, Scotland, and were driven offstage by a bottle throwing incident.

It was a #1 hit in Canada and Germany, #2 in Australia, the UK, Belgium, Norway, and the Netherlands, #3 in South Africa and Switzerland, and eventually peaked at #5 in the US.

We don’t know what to say anymore. Everything seems to fall short or seems petty in the face of the genocide we have all been witnessing. This song is for the people of Gaza, this song is for all the protesters, this song is our way of telling the world that we stand with the Palestinian people against this colonial genocide they are facing at the hands of the Israeli government. It’s impossible for us not to see the suffering of our own people in the faces of those who are suffering today. When a colonial force can’t break a people, the final move is to destroy the family because it’s our families and communities that keep us strong. Here on Turtle Island we know the lasting effects of this kind of attack on our families and its lasting effects on the survivors. So we send you all of our love along with this song. We know a song isn’t enough, but it’s the offering we have.
