FILM OF MIYAKOYA KOI AUCTION HOUSE 1986 - MARTIN AND RENE CELEBRATING 40 YEARS SUPPLYING JAPANESE KOI AROUND THE WORLD - I took this unique video back in 1986 at the Miyakoya Auction house. The auction house was located not far from the Ojiya Railway station. This was the main site where nearly every week during the koi season that breeders would bring their koi to sell to Japanese wholesalers and dealers. As you can see in the film it was very popular and we were the only Westerners there which caused a great deal of interest as back then very few foreigners came to Japan to buy koi. Hundreds of boxes of koi would be sold in these few hours. Also note that back then there was no need to keep the koi in plastic bags as there was no KHV. Unfortunately the auction site has long been closed down but it was for many years the centre for Japanese to come and buy their koi to sell all over Japan. Miyakoya san is still there and today many koi visitors go to his shop where you can still buy koi dry goods and books, he also sells tropical fish to locals. It’s another piece of koi history that has sadly gone, but the full story and film can be seen in our up coming documentary on koivision.tv in 2022 about myself and Rene’s journey here with koi and suppling koi around the world from Niigata. MURATA KOI FARM - Another short film we have not used in our JKX or Koivision films but here we see Murata san with help, select his baby koi. Murata san is world famous for his high quality show winning Kohaku. From breeding millions of fry in the spring all breeders will select the very best young koi over the few months from May to September. And by September they will end up with several thousands of Tosai selected from millions of fry. A hugely time consuming process but keeping the very high quality of their koi. MUSHIGAME AND YAMAKOSHI UNDER SNOW - At this time of the year the area of Yamakoshi and the village of Mushigame are normally under heavy snow. Mud ponds are empty and there is a daily routine of clearing snow from homes and fish houses. When the sun comes out then the views become stunning.
