Overcom was part of Winter Poetry Festival last week! We warmed up Avondale Library with some beautiful, raw, funny, new, hot poetry by Overcom pals and whānau Laura Vincent, gorm hendo, and Mary Mosteller, hosted by editor Grace Shelley. We were also honoured to hear words by local poets in the open mic at the end of the night. Thanks for having us, Avondale!

Overcom is farewelling incredible acting editor, Mary Mosteller. When I (founding editor Grace) say that Mary had to take over much more suddenly than we expected, I mean that I messaged them saying "Sorry I won't be home for you to come and collect the stock today, I am in labour at the hospital". And boy did they hit the ground running. During their time as acting editor, Mary put out two really amazing issues, tabled at Wellington Zinefest, worked with Bad Apple to produce a poetry series at Basement Theatre, fostered relationships with authors, and continued to grow Overcom's reputation as a key player in Aotearoa's lit journal scene. Overcom was in safe hands with Mary, and though I'm sad to say goodbye, I'm also so excited for them as they begin their Master of Creative Writing. Haere rā, Mary ❤️

Overcom Subs Open 💸 One-off special 💸 The "Cost of Living" Zine

Overcom is tabling at the Cost of Living Zine Market on Saturday 13 July. The market’s about all affordable zines, and we’re putting together a poetry zine especially for it.

It’ll be a bunch of poems, jammed in an A5 black-and-white one-page booklet, available free or by optional donation.

To submit:
💸 Email your poem to [email protected] with Cost of Living Zine in the subject line.
💸 Despite the name, the zine is unthemed.
💸 Previously published poems are welcome.
💸 Shorter poems preferred!

Do you want to be on Overcom's new editorial team?

The four members of the team will work together to create edit issues of the journal. In addition, each editor will have a role focusing on a different area of running a lit journal.

The four roles are:
✨ Editor 1: Social media and marketing
✨ Editor 2: Markets and events
✨ Editor 3: Dispatch, stocktake, and accounting
✨ Editor 4: Issue layout and graphic design

Please note, these are all volunteer roles - and the numbers don't indicate hierarchy!

To find out more about each role, and how to apply, read the doc linked in our bio. Please feel free to get in touch with founding editor Grace if you have any questions before applying!

Applications close Sunday 26 May

In our bio is a link to a document with all the info about their four editor roles. You'll see information about each role, but you won't see a list of required experience and qualifications. If you look at any of the roles and think "I could do that!" then you're qualified enough. If you're a fan of Overcom and you want to be on the team then you're qualified enough.

When you apply, you'll be asked for any relevant experience. Feel free to get creative with this. Maybe something that shows you can deliver work on a schedule is that you never handed in an assignment late or without an extension. Maybe your spreadsheet experience is your own personal budget. Maybe your event planning experience is being the one to organise your pals on a trip.

It's important that our new editorial team reflects a diversity of backgrounds and experiences, including those who are at the very beginning of their journey in the lit world. Could our editorial team include you?

Could you be one of Overcom's new editors? We're looking for three people to join the team and take on a specific area to manage. On top of looking after your niche, you'll also be editing issues: reading submissions and choosing which pieces are published.

To find out more about this volunteer opportunity, head to the link in our bio. Can't wait to work with you!

For its entire existence, Overcom has been completely run by one person. For most of the journal's life that was me, Grace, and while I was on maternity leave it was incredible writer and editor Mary Mosteller. Now, it's time to expand this one-man band into a team, and bring together a diversity of thoughts, backgrounds, and opinions to make Overcom even better.

Overcom Issue 9 is out now. This q***r literary journal draws on the spirit of Aotearoa’s fleeting summers: great-grandma’s bach, dense undergrowth, rain-soaked road trips, mosquitoes, werewolves, nosebleeds, exorcisms. Join us for chance conversations in the salon, sun nourishing the sage, fungi that bleed and skin that bleeds, s*x without kissing, and ghosts in your throat. A sunflower paints its own portrait; a monster holds multitudes; a speck of glitter travels far. Play ‘I spy’ with Noah’s ark, pixelated sunsets, the rabbit in the orchard, and saplings in the sunlight. This is the summer you’ve yearned for.

Writing by Cadence Chung, Chris Yee, Ethan Christensen, harold coutts, H**e Kearney, Jackson McCarthy, Kate Bodger, Kyra Lawler, Laura Vincent, Loretta Riach, Lukas Kofoed Reimann, Meg Falconer, and Zoë Deans

Art by hey scaredy cat, Judi Soutar, laurel & bears and Stephanie Smith

08 October is International Le***an Day. International Le***an Day is a day that originated in Aotearoa, around 1980. Q***r historians say that it was celebrated in May originally, but was moved to 08 October, six months after International Women's Day. International Le***an Day is one of two annual celebrations of le****ns; the other is Le***an Visibility Day on 26 April.

Let's celebrate with 'hey girls' by Cadence Chung.

Cadence Chung is a poet, student, musician, and composer from Te Whanganui-a-Tara, currently studying at the New Zealand School of Music. Her debut poetry chapbook anomalia was written in her last year of high school and published in April 2022 by We Are Babies Press. Her writing takes inspiration from Tumblr posts, antique stores, and dead poets. She identifies as Asian, q***r, and autistic.
