Award winning home care provider, Ashridge Home Care is hosting a free information open afternoon on Thursday 22nd May to offer advice and help if you are affected by dementia. This is shocking! An unscrupulous tradesman involved in criminal activity which resulted in a vulnerable elderly resident being conned out of more than £210,000 has been jailed, following investigation and prosecution by Buckinghamshire & Surrey Trading Standards.

Patrick Ward appeared at Aylesbury Crown Court on Thursday 1 May for sentencing after pleading guilty to a range of charges relating to fraud, linked to payment for works carried out over a number of years to the resident’s property. Ward, played a significant role in the fraud by attending the victim’s home, quoting for work, carrying out work, purchasing materials, and organising payments into a third party bank account which he was using as his own to receive £57,800 from the victim.

Details of the offence date back to November 2014. The court heard that two men made an initial cold call to the resident, who was 81 at the time, and told him there were issues with his roof that they could fix. The property, in High Wycombe, needed some work and the resident agreed to works being carried out.

The initial work to replace a few slates escalated and soon payment of £12,500 was requested and further works carried out. In February 2015 the resident requested another quote for works to a drainpipe. The defendant, Patrick Ward attended in March and said it would cost thousands.

Over the course of the next two years, Ward and a variety of other workers attended the property to carry out work after identifying a range of issues including leaks and cracks in masonry, damp proofing works and chimney repairs. As soon as one job was completed, the resident was advised that further works should be carried out with cash payment demanded each time. Threats were made to remove work carried out if payments were not made.

On several occasions workers would accompany the resident to the bank to get the cash, always ensuring the transaction took place away from the building. Bank workers at one branch attempted to intervene at one point, querying the need for the ongoing large cash withdrawals but the resident dismissed their concerns saying they were needed for house repairs.

The resident was asked to deposit some of the money requested for payment into a third-party bank account. A total of £57,800 was received into the bank account which belonged to the partner of the defendant.

An independent expert concluded the work should have cost no more than £11,000 in total and judged the work carried out by Ward and his associates as so poor in quality, it was worth no more than £2,500.

The case was brought to court following investigations by Buckinghamshire & Surrey Trading Standards Team. The victim passed away a number of years ago, but evidence was presented in court using information recorded in his diaries.

Ward received a custodial sentence of three years and one month. Proceedings were also started to claim back the money lost by the victim.

Delicious homemade cakes and preserves, along with home-grown flowers and plants, will be just some of the attractions at Hearing Dogs for Deaf People free Plant and Cake Sale, taking place on Saturday 10 May at the charity’s southern training centre in Saunderton, Princes Risborough. This year’s event will also feature a fun dog show, with a prize for the waggiest tail!

The now-legendary sales, which are organised and run by the charity’s Buckinghamshire Fundraising Branch, led by Fiona and Rob Daniels, have grown from very humble beginnings into one of the most popular fixtures in the Hearing Dogs calendar. In fact, since they began in 2020, the team has raised over £100,000.

Fiona and fellow volunteer Wendy Baldwin bake most of the cakes themselves, Fiona and Rob grow the plants and also make chutneys from their own garden produce. Another branch member, Peter Shepperd, will be making his famous Cornish pasties and chilli sauces.

Anyone visiting with their own dogs will be welcome to take part in a fun dog show, with categories such as ‘the waggiest tail’, ‘musical sits’ and ‘best catch’ among others.

For those who have worked up an appetite after the other activities, there will be mouth-watering treats on offer, including cakes, savouries and delicious South African-inspired street food from award-winning local caterers Bokkie.

The free-to-enter sale will be held on 10 May between 10am and 4pm in the grounds of the Hearing Dogs southern training centre, The Grange, Haw Lane, Saunderton HP27 9NS. Visitors are welcome to bring their dogs along, but they should be kept on a lead and the charity would ask people to clear up after them.

We had the best time at the Queen of the Night - A Tribute to Whitney Houston show last night at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre, celebrating the music of the one and only Whitney Houston. What a voice Adenike Adewale has, just incredible. The whole theatre was up on their feet, singing, dancing and having the best time. Think we are still buzzing from the atmosphere. Wish it was tonight! Touring until the end of the year, check out the dates and venues and grab yourself some tickets for a really special treat. Tickets are available at

This Easter, Woburn Safari Park is unveiling a range of exciting new attractions, making it the perfect time for visitors to experience unforgettable wildlife encounters and interactive adventures. With conservation and animal welfare at the heart of the park’s mission, these latest additions offer new opportunities to get even closer to some of the world’s most incredible species while providing engaging experiences for families.

Giraffe Meadow is a brand-new space designed for the park’s Rothschild’s giraffe herd. This new area gives the gentle giants more space to graze while allowing visitors to observe them up close. On weekends and school holidays, keepers will host talks and demonstrations, offering insight into the lives of these endangered animals and the conservation efforts in place to protect them.
For younger adventurers, the Little Ranger Rovers provide a brand-new interactive experience in the Foot Safari. Children aged 3 to 9 can get behind the wheel of their very own mini Land Rover Defender letting them imagine what it’s like to be a real safari ranger on patrol.

A must-see attraction this Easter is Reptile Ranch, allowing guests to get up close to some of the park’s most fascinating species but also providing carefully designed habitats that better reflect their natural environments, ensuring the highest standards of animal care.

The park is also celebrating the return of a much-loved species with the arrival of a new breeding pair of bush dogs. The duo, named Chilli and Bandit, recently arrived from France and are settling into their new home in the Foot Safari’s Cachorro Range. As a near-threatened species, their presence at Woburn Safari Park is an important step in ongoing conservation efforts, with hopes that they will go on to have pups in the future.
