Woburn Safari Park is inviting animal lovers to help name four otter pups, born this summer to proud parents Beatrix and Kovu!

These Asian short-clawed otters are the smallest of all otter species, and are native to wetlands across Asia, including Vietnam. Sadly, they’re listed as vulnerable due to habitat loss and the illegal fur trade, making births like these vital for conservation efforts.

The new arrivals - two boys and two girls, join big sister Thiên thần and brothers Xúc Xích, Tép Tép, and Hoàng Tử.

After their recent health checks and microchipping, the pups are ready for their next big milestone: getting their names!

Woburn Safari Park is inviting families to take part in a special otter naming competition. This engaging, conservation-focused activity gives children and adults alike the chance to vote for their favourite names from a shortlist of beautiful Vietnamese options chosen by the Park’s keepers.

By voting, participants will automatically be included in a prize draw to win a family day ticket to the Park, along with an exclusive VIP otter talk. The lucky winners will enjoy a private talk and feeding session with one of Woburn’s expert keepers, offering a closer look at the fascinating behaviours and conservation importance of Asian short-clawed otters.

The pups enjoy every aspect of their specially designed Otter Falls enclosure, where they can be seen in a natural aquatic habitat, foraging, vocalising, and energetically interacting with their siblings.

Vote now to help name the pups and you could WIN a wild day out for the whole family!

Rogue builders who took advantage of vulnerable Buckinghamshire homeowners have both been handed prison sentences in court, following investigation and prosecution by Buckinghamshire & Surrey Trading Standards.

Brothers Jamie and Sean Casey were served custodial sentences when they appeared at Aylesbury Crown Court on Wednesday 10 September 2025, having pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing. Jamie Casey was sentenced to 18 months in prison and Sean Casey received a 10-month prison sentence.

The brothers’ crimes included carrying out a catalogue of unnecessary works, charging inflated prices, using inferior materials and either leaving works incomplete or to such a poor standard of workmanship that the homeowners were left with further serious problems they had to pay other workers to fix. Jamie Casey was also accused of using aggressive and threatening behaviour in seeking payment and asking for payment to be made directly to a personal account rather than into a business account.

The defendants approached the first homeowner in Chesham in November 2023. Jamie Casey cold-called the property claiming there were issues with the chimney. Using paperwork in the name of First Class Builders and Decorators Limited, a quote for £12,000, was issued. Sean Casey was listed as the director of the company at the time, however subsequent investigations revealed that the company was dissolved only a day later.

Despite asking for work not to start straightaway, builders turned up at the property within days. Payment was requested over subsequent weeks which far exceeded the original amount quoted and additional works were started which were not agreed by the homeowner.

On one occasion when the homeowner grew weary and questioned the costs, Jamie Casey followed him upstairs and threatened to remove materials so the roof would leak if payment wasn’t made.

The alarm was finally raised by bank staff who spoke to the homeowner when he was in the process of withdrawing further funds to pay the builders and the police were contacted.

In total the homeowner paid a total of £20,400 to the bank account in the name of First Class Builders and Decorators Limited. He also had to pay a further £9,000 for another trader to complete the works to his property.

The second homeowners, from Farnham Common, were also cold-called by the defendants in November 2023. When they told Jamie Casey that the porch had leaked, Casey immediately started removing tiles and said his company, First Class Builders and Decorators Limited, could carry out the works needed for £3,000. Despite the lack of contract, the homeowners felt pressured to agree to the works when, without warning, scaffolding was erected outside the following day.

Over subsequent days, Jamie Casey listed a wide range of additional works, quoting verbal figures for costs.

Overnight on 26 November 2023 the homeowners experienced significant flooding in the bathroom below one of the flat roofs that was being repaired. When Jamie Casey was questioned on the matter, he simply shrugged it off. Although subsequent repairs were made to the roof, the internal damage to the bathroom was not addressed and the Caseys offered no recompense.

In a similar manner to the first homeowner, Jamie Casey had no qualms about entering the house uninvited to discuss payment which the homeowner said made him feel harassed and pressured.

Eventually the son of the homeowner intervened and when no satisfactory paperwork was produced, the family spoke to the police and contacted trading standards.

In total, over a 10-day period in November 2023, the homeowners had made payments totalling £37,200.

An independent expert who analysed the work carried out at the second property described the quality as ‘abysmal’. His report concluded: “What would appear to be a very typical small repair has escalated inexplicably for no apparent reason with extensive works being undertaken abysmally and poorly executed for, I believe, no other reason than to charge extortionate amounts of money for very questionable and unnecessary work.”

In sentencing, Judge Keeley drew attention to the fact that the defendants persistently targeted vulnerable, older people, harassing, pressurising and pestering them into parting with large sums of money for often unnecessary works. He said they had caused the homeowners ‘real distress, anguish, and great upset’, in addition to financial loss. He described their actions as ‘despicable’.

To avoid being duped by a rogue builder it is always advisable to get a number of written quotes for any work you are planning. Ask trusted friends and family for recommendations and get a detailed written contract with the builder you choose. Always check references by contacting previous clients and verify the builder's credentials and trade association memberships. Be cautious of suspiciously low prices, requests for cash up front, or builders who knock on your door soliciting work. Never feel pressured to accept work and if in doubt, contact Buckinghamshire & Surrey Trading Standards.

Twelve larger-than-life trolls need YOU to join their team of field researchers! 🧌✨ They’ve noticed that we humans get up to all kinds of puzzling antics, and many grown-ups even seem to have forgotten how to connect with nature. So, the magical beings have set off on an exciting mission to learn all they can about humankind – and they need the help of curious, nature-loving kids to show the way!

The trolls are created entirely from recycled materials by Danish recycle artist Thomas Dambo.

With over 11,000 animals across its 600-acre site, is the UKs largest zoo. It’s a brilliant day out for people looking to connect with nature and help create a world where wildlife thrives.   Opening at 10am daily and closing at 6pm, and you are very welcome to stay the whole day and explore at your leisure. We are heading there this September and we cannot wait to see the trolls!! 🚗🌳👀

We’d recommend downloading the Whipsnade Zoo app (its free!) as it has talk schedules and events information, as well as a map that is handy for navigating the zoo. We find it extremely useful everytime we visit ☺️. Don’t miss the pride of ten northern African lions, including their 7 cubs, over in the Africa zone - we cannot wait to see these little cubs again 🤭🦁.

Eythrope Gardens celebrate 150 glorious years with their first ever Open Day on 16 August 2025. Explore one of Britain’s finest private working gardens as part of a season of celebrations surrounding the establishment of one of Buckinghamshire’s true hidden gems.

The enchanting private gardens of Miss Alice de Rothschild (1847-1922), one of the pioneering champions of horticulture, was once described by Gregory Long, President Emeritus of the New York Botanical Garden as “the perfect dream of a place”.

Eythrope maintains an almost legendary status amongst gardening aficionados, not just for its beauty and variety but also as a haven for preserving traditional horticultural techniques. The garden also stands today as a rare surviving example of a historic country house kitchen garden, many of which were dramatically scaled back or completely abandoned after the two World Wars.

Today, Eythrope’s gardens are looked after by a team of nine skilled and knowledgeable gardeners, who were awarded ‘Master Gardeners’ at the 2024 Royal Windsor Flower Show. Inspired by the horticultural ambition of Miss Alice, they continue to uphold her legacy through their planting schemes and displays throughout the year.

Tickets for the Open Day are available from www.waddesdon.org.uk and are priced at £15 for adults and £10 for RHS Members. Visitors will also be able to purchase seasonal fruit, vegetables, plants and cut flowers grown at Eythrope and light refreshments will be available.

On the evening of Saturday 16 August, the Manor Restaurant at Waddesdon will host a special four-course dinner inspired by the exceptional produce from Eythrope. Visitors can also enjoy guided tours throughout the summer, available every Wednesday and on the last Friday of each month. For more information, please visit www.waddesdon.org.uk.

Flackwell Heath Community Library are looking for a volunteer/volunteers to run Storytime on Tuesdays 10.30-11am. The voluntary role requires someone to read stories to under 5's during school term time. Of course, the library has a huge selection of books to choose from. We love the Ant & Bee stories here!

If you are interested please pop into the library on Chapel Road in Flackwell Heath for more information. Perhaps it's a role you could share with a friend so you'd only need to volunteer every other week? It's a relaxed environment where all the children have a parent/carer with them. And there's nothing better than reading to curious minds, feeding their imagination, is there?
