18/08/2024

Eligible working parents in Buckinghamshire with children aged +9 months can apply for hours of funded childcare for use in a variety of settings, including nurseries, pre-schools and childminders.

If you are an eligible working parent, you can now apply for:

• 15 hours childcare if your child is aged 9 to 36 months
• 30 hours childcare for your three or four-year-old

You will need to apply by 31 August 2024 to use your hours from 1 September 2024. To do so, visit GOV.UK to get your code for a place in September and then share it with your childcare provider. To continue receiving the Government support, you will need to reconfirm your details every three months on your GOV.UK account.

This comes alongside other government childcare support, including Tax-Free Childcare and Universal Credit Childcare. You might be able to use more than one offer together to help with your childcare costs.

Childcare is also expanding for primary-school age children. From September, parents in England will start to see an expansion in the availability of childcare in their local area before and after school, that runs from 8am until 6pm or later, also known as ‘wraparound childcare’. If you are eligible for Tax-Free Childcare or Universal Credit Childcare, you can use the support to help pay for your wraparound childcare.

Please visit our Buckinghamshire Family Information Service to see what support you might be eligible for.

A whole variety of skills are needed to make a good foster carer and without knowing it, you may already have lots of skills and experience that would help you on your fostering journey.
That is the message Buckinghamshire Council’s Foster with Bucks team is sharing with local people as it launches its new ‘If You Can…’ campaign.
The new campaign aims to highlight the skills and experience that can help in the role of a foster carer and the wealth of training and support available to their foster carers

• If you can listen without judgement…
• If you can be patient and stay calm under pressure…
• If you can wipe away tears and be there when they need you…
• If you can care…
• If you can protect…
…You could be a foster carer.

Throughout the summer the Foster with Bucks team will be attending events across the county where people can stop for a chat and ask questions about fostering:

• Saturday 17 August – Wycombe Pride, High Wycombe
• Friday 23 August – Pride in the Park, Aylesbury
• Saturday 24 August – Live in the Park, Aylesbury
• Wednesday 28 August – Buckinghamshire Council’s Community Action Day, Chesham

• Thursday 29 August – Bucks County Show, Aylesbury

If you are not able to catch the team at these events and want to know more about joining Buckinghamshire Council’s foster care community, book your place on one of our free regular online Fostering Information Evenings or sign up to our newsletter.

Have you seen One Man and his Bog running around locally recently? It’s quite a sight if you do! Local man Giles Cuthbert is off again with the bog on September 14th taking on the Thames Path Ultra and aiming to do it inside 24 hours, all the while pushing the toilet. Giles is raising money for Diabetes UK, a charity very close to his heart.

This latest challenge is for Giles’ kids who are both Type 1 diabetics.

Over the last 8-10 years Giles has raised nearly 50k for various charities, starting with cycling to Paris for Parkinsons UK, then cycling to Paris again 3 months after chemo and radiotherapy, running marathons, half marathons, swimming the Serpentine, cycling to Paris again and Ride London. In lockdown half marathons took place in the garden then when lockdown eased Giles ran marathons in fancy dress. At Christmas there was an elf run, 12 half marathons in 24 days (dressed as an elf) for the National Elf Service for all they did for us through COVID.

Everything that Giles has been through, his boys with their diabetes, his dad with Parkinsons, his own cancer battle, the NHS have been at the focal point of why he does what he does, without them he would not be here today!

If you would like to donate to Giles’ fundraising please either scan the QR code or visit https://www.justgiving.com/page/giles-cuthbert-thames-path2024

And if you see Giles out and about running with “the bog” please give him a cheer or maybe pop a £1 in the flush!

Good luck Giles, you are amazing!

On 10 and 11 August, 10am until 5pm, (this coming weekend) Chiltern Open Air Museum has a multi-period re-enactment event covering periods of war throughout Britain’s history. You can visit the living history camps and watch a variety of displays from across the nation's history. There will be combat demonstrations, firing displays and dancing!

Learn about war in medieval times by visiting the apothecary living history encampment and seeing warhorses in the arena. Watch the arming of the knight, see warhorse re-enactments with some skill at arms, and mounted combat displays.

Explore the English Civil War with Sir Marmaduke’s Rawdon’s Regimente of Foote living encampment. Talk to civilian and military re-enactors including musketeers, artillery and pikeman.

Meet Napoleonic soldiers and find out about the life of a Rifleman in Wellington's army during the Peninsular War. Visit the living history encampment and learn how the soldiers' families lived. Watch a thrilling display of military skill in their firing display.

Re-enactors from The Rifles Living History Society and the 10th Essex WWI Living History Group will show what life was like for the soldiers during the Great War and how the British home front played a vital role. There will be demonstrations of the Leach Trench Catapult. You can also step back in time in COAM’s Nissen Bow Hut, designed during World War I to meet the need for a building that was cheap and easy to build in different locations.

On the Saturday, there will be the opportunity to listen to a talk by Ben Wilberforce, author of Furze; Sweethearts and Swan Songs. The book is a retelling of Ben's great-grandfather's hand-written diary he kept during WWI. It intertwines the cruel realities of war and the contrast of a soldier's first love.

Members of the Oxford Home Guard Group will be demonstrating what life was like on the home front during the Second World War including the roles of ARP Wardens and the Women’s Voluntary Service.

Meet the Land Girls in the Dig for Victory Allotment, discover the RAF briefing room in our WWII Nissen Hut, and join the team from Doing their Bit: Life on the Home Front as they show us what it was like to be bombed out.

The American Infantry Association will be demonstrating a field Headquarters for the 35th Infantry Division stationed in England prior to D-Day. There will be a US Army Chaplain in the field with his wartime Jeep and trailer and a living history encampment from the US 82nd Airborne Division.

Jeep, Jump, Jive will be creating a party atmosphere with popular 1940s music playing from their US Army Air Force Jeep. There will be Lindy Hop social dancing and the opportunity for everyone to get involved with fun classes for all ages.

This engaging event has something for the whole family. Book tickets at www.coam.org.uk

Some of the table manners at Woburn Safari Park might not have been the best, but the Rothschild's giraffes and Barbary macaque monkeys really enjoyed their summer ‘party’, thrown by keepers earlier this week.

Complete with veggie versions of ice creams, cocktails and sandwiches, the reactions of the Barbary macaques were priceless, as they enjoyed sitting at their mini picnic table, eating their carefully crafted picnic lunch. The summer feast was complete with potato 'ice creams', butternut squash and cabbage 'sandwiches' and tasty mashed vegetable 'cocktails', the perfect snacks for a sunny day.

The herd of Rothschild's giraffes also got in on the action, with keepers securing their 'summer buffet' to a large log for them to enjoy. They were particularly fond of their boujie butternut squash 'cocktails', garnished with a tasty sprig of mint! Visitors spotted the giraffes using their long tongues to scoop up and enjoy these tasty summer treats.

Visitors can spot the giraffe, monkeys and many more fascinating species enjoying summer-themed enrichment when they visit the Park over the coming weeks, as keepers come up with inventive ways to provide enrichment to the animals during the summer.

Following on from our post yesterday, Kenny Lee Madgwick pulled out the stops with his excuses, even claiming he couldn't pick the rubbish back up because he had been arrested so it wasn't his fault! Unbelievable. If you have evidence showing an offence taking place and you are willing to provide a witness statement, please contact the council’s Enforcement Team at: [email protected]
To report fly-tipping anywhere in Buckinghamshire visit: www.buckinghamshire.gov.uk/fix-my-street

Buckinghamshire Council has successfully prosecuted a fly-tipper who was already in prison for other offences, once again demonstrating the local authority’s zero tolerance stance on anyone who commits this crime.
Following an investigation by Buckinghamshire Council’s fly-tipping enforcement team, Kenny Lee Madgwick, 34, currently residing at HMP Stocken was prosecuted for brazenly dumping waste in two locations in Aylesbury Vale.
Madgwick admitted fly-tipping a load of waste at Westfield Road, Long Crendon, on or before 18 July 2023. He entered a guilty plea when his case was heard at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court on 24 July 2024. He also entered a guilty plea to depositing waste illegally at Southern Road, Aylesbury, on 10 November 2023. Madgwick claimed that on the second occasion he had intended to pick the waste up again but had been prevented from doing so having been arrested for other offences.

Buckinghamshire Council is sending a hard-hitting message to anyone tempted to litter in the county – For Bucks Sake – don’t do it!

Anyone caught deliberately littering will face a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) for £500 under a hard-hitting new policy.

Sweet wrappers, fast food containers, cigarette butts and v**e canisters are all familiar sights on our verges, open spaces and roadsides because people have chosen to dump them rather than dispose of them responsibly.

Under its hard-hitting campaign, the council will also be appealing to motorists and road users to send in dash-cam and phone footage of littering they may have captured on camera – where of course, it is safe to do so.

Dealing with discarded litter is an ongoing problem for councils up and down the country. Annually it costs Buckinghamshire tax-payers an estimated £3.5m to clean and dispose of littered waste. It’s a huge £25,000 every time the council clears litter from the A404 Marlow by-pass.

Under the new approach, the council will use civil enforcement powers to penalise the registered keeper of a vehicle linked to a littering offence rather than needing to identify the exact individual who dropped the litter. This makes it easier to secure a positive result as you don’t need to be the one who dropped the litter to have to pay the consequences.

The Proud of Bucks Awards are back shining a light on the incredible contributions of our county’s unsung heroes – the volunteers, groups, and organisations that have made a positive difference in our communities over the past 12 months.

Buckinghamshire Council’s 16 Community Boards will choose winners from their local area, for each of the three award categories:

• Good Neighbour Award – adults 21+ who has made a difference in their local community, such as through neighbourhood schemes, supporting voluntary causes or befriending services.
• Young Champion Award – for a young person under 21 who has made a significant contribution towards their local community, for example, through volunteering, supporting a charitable cause or championing their peers.
• Outstanding Group Award – recognises and celebrates a voluntary group in the local area who has made a positive impact on their community such as delivering a service, championing a cohort of residents, or supporting and enhancing local spaces.

“Do you know someone who has gone above and beyond? Perhaps their project or dedication has impacted you directly. I’d encourage you to nominate them – we want to hear about all the inspiring efforts, enthusiasm, and innovation happening right here in Buckinghamshire!” asks Arif Hussain, Buckinghamshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities.

Nominations for the Proud of Bucks Awards are now open now, the deadline for nominations is midnight on Sunday 11 August. Nominations will be reviewed by a panel of judges and the winners will be announced at local Community Board events in the autumn.

Submit your nomination by using the online Proud of Bucks nomination form https://account.buckscc.gov.uk/service/Proud_of_Bucks_Awards_2024

From today drivers in the Wycombe area will be able to take advantage of an innovative new scheme being piloted in council car parks locally. The National Parking Platform (NPP) is a national pilot which aims to provide customers with greater flexibility in paying for parking.

The pilot scheme will run in all council car parks in Wycombe, Princes Risborough, Bourne End and Marlow and will allow customers to choose which supplier they purchase their parking time through. At present only one digital supplier, RingGo, is offered. The NPP will allow customers to choose from three suppliers: JustPark; PaybyPhone and RingGo. Each one has its own dedicated app, fees, and telephone number, allowing customers to choose which supplier works for them and the price they pay.

Find out more online about the National Parking Platform, including the fees that suppliers will be charging initially in the Wycombe area: www.buckinghamshire.gov.uk/npp

Bees, chalk streams, dry gardening and wellbeing are all hot topics at this year’s Green Festival at Chiltern Open Air Museum Sunday 9th June from 10am.

This family friendly event includes theatre performances by Smoking Apples featuring a giant bee puppet. Children can take part in craft activities with Watford Recycling Group and discover what is in COAM’s ponds with Bucks Amphibian Group. Local horses will also be visiting to help welcome visitors.

Gardening will be a central theme with garden design experts on hand to talk to you about the best ways to plant your garden for various weather conditions. Buckinghamshire Gardens Trust will be talking about historical gardens and the COAM gardening team will be chatting to visitors about the work they are doing in the gardens and how they manage to grow the most superb veg!

There will be a theatre performance of The Head Gardener where brothers Warren and Jake Oldershaw have propagated a delightful theatre show that digs deep into the reasons why we could all do with a bit more horticulture in our lives. Local bee keepers will also be on-site to discuss the importance of bees and how we can help to look after them.

Duck Pond Market will be bringing along market stalls for you to purchase some local sustainably made products. There will be live music by talented local musicians throughout the event alongside live broadcasting from Chiltern Voice.

Local environmental groups will be on-hand to chat to visitors so the event will be alive with chatter around environmental issues. You can also catch Bushcraft with David Willis spoon carving and you can see COAM’s flock of Oxford Down sheep having a hair cut in the farmyard.

There will also be a focus on wellbeing with Tai Chi and Yoga taster sessions running throughout the day.

Chiltern Open Air Museum is celebrating the Patron Saint of England this weekend with knights in shining armour (don’t we all want a knight in shining armour), mounted combat demonstrations, and battles with ferocious fire breathing beasts.

Expert medieval re-enactors will show visitors just how knights prepared to take on mythical creatures on their gallant quests in days gone by. Once clad in their heavy armour they will take to the field on horseback to hone their jousting and combat skills.

There is a dragon quest around the Museum for youngsters to help the knights seek out their pray and all the family can join.

The action takes place between 11am and 3pm on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st April.

Enthusiastic Museum volunteers sporting period costumes will be around the buildings helping to bring history to life.
