In the run up to Christmas, Buckinghamshire Council is highlighting where families and individuals can seek emergency help and support if they need it over the festive season.

Any Buckinghamshire residents needing emergency support or help with food and/or energy should contact the council’s Helping Hand service using the online form or by calling 01296 531 151. This service is available during office hours but is closed at weekends and on the public holiday days over Christmas and New Year.

Anyone in immediate need of food who cannot wait until the next working day when the Helping Hand service is open – and has no other avenue to help – should contact the council’s Emergency Social Work Team on 0800 999 7677. They will not be able to provide food on Christmas Day when the shops are closed, but otherwise can provide immediate help and advice in an emergency.

Many foodbanks will be operating different opening days and times over the Christmas period – residents who need to access a foodbank will need a referral from the council’s Helping Hand service, or another similar support service, so please contact the Helping Hand service in the first instance if you or someone you know needs to use a foodbank.

If you see anyone sleeping out on the streets in Buckinghamshire, please contact StreetLink online or call 0300 500 0914. They will notify the council’s dedicated outreach workers. If you see anyone you believe to be under the age of 18 and/or are concerned about the health or welfare of anyone that you see sleeping rough, please call 999.

Residents who may be finding this time of year challenging or lonely, or are experiencing difficulty with their mental health can find help and advice on the NHS Buckinghamshire Talking Therapies webpage. In addition, there are some top tips on mental health and being ‘kind to your mind’ during the festive period at Health and Wellbeing Bucks.

Information about additional support can be found on the council’s cost of living webpages.

Online advice is available 24/7 from Citizens Advice Bucks, plus the national advice line is available during office hours on 0800 144 8848 if you need immediate advice.

The council’s offices will be closed on Wednesday 25 December 2024, Thursday 26 December 2024 and Wednesday 1 January 2025. They will remain open on other days during the festive period.

Michael Prager, the Chairman of the RNLI South Bucks & Thames branch, has a heartfelt message to local Volunteers. It is also a ‘thank you’ to the public who continue to support the RNLI.

For all of our supporters, sorters, funding exhorters.
To the ground breakers, the cash takers and the bucket shakers.
The contactless operators, the message curators,
The collectors, prospectors and box inspectors….

THANK YOU

We only asked you to ‘blow the doors off’ but you blew the roof off!

In our 200th year you have helped the RNLI South Bucks & Thames branch turn in a record result.

As of Dec 17th 2024 and subject to a few more static boxes being emptied we have raised the fantastic sum of £33,531.51. That is over £10,000 better than our previous best year.

We couldn’t have given the RNLI a better 200th birthday gift to
help save lives at sea and on our rivers and it’s all because of
YOU. Thank you.

I would also like to mention the outstanding work carried out during the year by Mary Oswald, the RNLI Water Safety Adviser (Education Adviser). Mary has successfully carried out talks on Water Safety to some 2000 children and she has travelled to Watford, Hemel Hempstead, Harrow, Slough, Windsor and all places/schools in between Seer Green and Beaconsfield. She talks to Cubs, Scout Groups, and to Sea Cadets in Henley and High Wycombe.

Mary usually receives referrals from RNLI’s headquarters in Poole or from schools directly to conduct talks to various age groups. This service is part of our ‘RESPECT THE WATER’ campaign.

The RNLI is about saving lives on all waterways, not just the sea.

What a superb cast for this year's Aladdin at Wycombe Swan Theatre! You know panto is only at it's best when the cast are having as much fun as the audience and the cast this year were certainly doing that. We love La Voix and Vernon Kay together on stage, their banter, quips, cheeky innuendo and of course we mustn't forget the costumes! Backed up by an incredibly talented cast (definitely Simba and not the third zebra from the left as La Voix would have us believe) it's the must-see panto in Bucks this year.

We loved it!

It’s panto time … oh no it isn’t 😂 We had the best time watching The Further Adventures of Peter Pan .theatre where the cast went above and beyond to entertain us! Starring Bradley Riches (Heartstoppers) as Peter fully supported by Andy Collins as Smee, our panto favourite 🤩 (Christmas isn’t Christmas without water pistols and toilet rolls) alongside Corrie’s Mark Moraghan as Captain Hook and West End stage star Emma Jay Thomas as Mrs Darling. Add in Maeve Byrne (Heathers) as Emily Darling and Leanne Garretty as Tinker-bell and you’ve got all the ingredients of a great panto . We loved the Pirate Crew who are the acrobatic troop the Nitwits, absolutely brilliant!

Performances are taking place all the way up until Sunday 5th January 2025.

If you’re in Risborough, you have to try at ! 🍗 🐥

Tonight’s flavours were incredible – sticky soy, buffalo, and masala, all made with homemade sauces and everything freshly cooked just for you. 🤤

The gluten-free wings tasted just as good as the regular ones – couldn’t even tell the difference! Just be sure to ask a few days in advance if you need the gluten-free option, so they can prep and cook it in a separate fryer.

Highly recommend – you won’t be disappointed! Check out and for future pop-up dates. ✨

This rogue trader did not appear in hiya bucks magazines. We carry out our own checks on any new businesses contacting us to make sure they are good and proper and right for the magazines. What an awful financial mess he has left these two homeowners in!

A rogue builder who conned two Buckinghamshire homeowners out of a combined total of just under £83,000 for a variety of unnecessary work that was carried out to a poor standard has been sentenced in court following an investigation by Buckinghamshire & Surrey Trading Standards service.

Nelson Botton, owner of NJB Roofing & Building Ltd and NJB Roofing & Sons Ltd was prosecuted for scamming two residents who had contacted him after seeing an advertisement for his companies in a local publication. Both residents were drawn to the advert as it displayed a ‘Check A Trade’ logo which is designed to indicate legitimate businesses that guarantee quality workmanship. However, it was subsequently revealed that Botton was using the logo fraudulently, duping the two homeowners with misleading information.

The first resident, owner of a Grade II listed property, was conned out of a total of £69,700. She contacted NJB Roofing & Building Ltd for a quote to address a small leak she had noticed in her property. She went to the trouble of looking online to check reviews and was confident she was dealing with a reputable company.

When Botton initially visited in June 2021 he quoted £500 to repair lead flashing. He subsequently quoted £500 plus VAT to replace up to 20 tiles and check the whole roof and clear guttering.

Three weeks later Mr Botton turned up unannounced at the property and having inspected the roof said that there were some further issues. He quoted £4,700 for all the jobs and requested payment upfront.

Work started in August 2021 but within days Botton claimed further essential works were needed. When the resident explained that as a Grade II listed property, any replacement roof tiles would need to be reclaimed, Botton said he could source these and said the fee would be £20,000.

Over coming weeks works commenced, during which time, Botton claimed a number of additional works were needed. As claims for more work piled up, the resident became more wary. Botton would often turn up late at night demanding payment, leaving her feeling intimidated and scared. Finally, in February 2022, a visit from the homeowner’s nephew, prompted her to contact the Trading Standards service to make a complaint.

Specialists appointed by Trading Standards to review the work carried out by Botton concluded: The majority of the work was neither required or necessary and the works: “have been undertaken to an abysmal standard, there are extensive defects and extensive areas where new modern practices have been introduced and are completely wrong”.

The damage caused by Botton’s botched works, left the homeowner with a bill of more than £130k to repair.

In April 2022, the second resident appointed Botton’s company, NJB Roofing & Sons Ltd, to carry out works to her home having seen an advert in a local magazine. Once again, Botton visited to quote for the works. Botton submitted an initial quote of £5,975 plus VAT with a £3,000 deposit to be paid upfront and the balance due on completion.

Work began in early May but two weeks in, Botton told the resident that the entire roof would need relining requiring a further £5,880 inclusive of VAT. The resident had not previously experienced any difficulties with the roof but agreed to the works.

As work progressed the resident became more concerned about the quality of work carried out and the amount of work Botton claimed was needed. Despite requesting receipts and guarantees from Botton, none were given and eventually the resident contacted the Trading Standards service.

Independent sources confirmed the resident was right to be concerned with much of the work carried out not being needed and the quality far below required standards.

Nelson Botton was questioned by Trading Standards officers but denied any wrongdoing in both cases. He stood by his opinion that both properties were in need of the repairs quoted for and refuted the reports made by independent professionals. When questioned over the use of the ‘Check A Trade’ logo on his advert he claimed he was previously a member and hadn’t realised the logo was still being used despite his lapsed membership.

Botton pleaded guilty to seven charges under The Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008. At Aylesbury Crown Court on Friday 28 November, Botton was sentenced to seven and a half months in prison. He was also given a restraining order for five years, meaning he cannot contact the two complainants, and was disqualified from being a company director for five years.

Mark Winn, Buckinghamshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing & Regulatory Services said: “Thanks to the efforts of our trading standards team this criminal will not be able to con any other innocent homeowners. The sheer audacity and scale of his deception defies belief and when challenged he used intimidation and threatening behaviour to get his way. He deliberately targeted vulnerable residents who placed their trust in him and he took full advantage for his own gain.”

Buckinghamshire & Surrey Trading Standards Service advice to anyone looking to hire a trader to carry out work for them is to make some simple checks before hiring them, including, if a trader is claiming that they are a member of any trade association, it is advisable to contact the trade association directly to ascertain whether they are a member and authorised to display the trade association’s logo on business literature.

On 7 and 8 December, visit Chiltern Open Air Museum to step back in time and find out about how Christmas was celebrated in the past.

The Museum’s collection of historic buildings will be decorated traditionally for Christmas with ivy, natural foliage, and candles. The 1940s Prefab will show how people celebrated a restrained wartime Christmas enlivened by make-do-and-mend decorations. The forge will be lit and the blacksmith busy hammering away making winter products. Tudor re-enactors will be bringing the site to life showing pre-Christmas preparations and visitors are invited to help them make traditional kissing boughs.

There will artisan craft stalls around the Museum full of locally made products as well as stalls from the traveling historical market. The Museum’s shop will be stocked with items that would make great gifts.

Local choirs will be providing some festive musical entertainment. You can take part in candle-making, listen to festive storytelling, take part in craft activities, see Father Christmas and have a ride on some festive ponies.

The event will run from 10am – 4pm. Pre-booking your tickets is advised. For further information visit www.coam.org.uk

Buckinghamshire Council campaign “Christmas Angels” highlights five local charities and encourages residents to donate where they can. The festive five includes: Heart of Bucks (Together Against Poverty), Inspire Bucks (Christmas Toy Appeal), Aylesbury Vineyard Storehouse, Chiltern Foodbank and One Can Trust.

Not all children are guaranteed a gift to open on Christmas morning, but that is where residents of Buckinghamshire can assist Inspire Bucks with their Christmas Gift Appeal. The appeal aims to ensure that some of the most disadvantaged local children and young people (ranging from babies to care leavers up to the age of 25) get at least one gift to open this Christmas.

Inspire Bucks works closely with council social workers, schools and food banks to identify recipients. Monetary donations are used to buy suitable gifts for the children and young people, ensuring everyone will receive at least one gift. Last year, the appeal supported over 4,000 children thanks to the support and generosity of Buckinghamshire residents.

The Together Against Poverty appeal, from Heart of Bucks, aims to raise funds to provide essentials such as clothing, food and heat to families and individuals experiencing significant hardship and distress in Buckinghamshire. Support will help individuals and families facing food, shelter, fuel or digital poverty access the immediate help they need, as well as help to turn their lives around and make a change for themselves and their families.

One Can Trust, Aylesbury Vineyard Storehouse and Chiltern Foodbank provide essential items including but not limited to emergency food parcels for local people on low incomes, benefits or who would otherwise find themselves in temporary hardship.

From giving hope to someone living in poverty in Buckinghamshire, or helping every child experience the magic of Christmas, to enabling local organisations to provide essential items and emergency food parcels to reduce food poverty – every donation, big or small, will make a difference to someone in need this winter.
