The Universities That Don’t Understand Academic Freedom | By Yascha Mounk

Leaders of prestigious institutions who can’t say whether advocating “the genocide of Jews” is allowed on campus seem to have a basic literacy problem with free speech.

The Ivy League Exposes Itself | The Commentary Magazine Podcast
John Podhoretz, Abe Greenwald, Matthew Continetti & Seth Mandel take up the prevarication and plain dishonesty of university presidents during the House committee hearing on campus anti-Semitism. One claims not to know about foreign funding and another doesn't think incitement to anti-Semitic violence is a conduct violation. For Harvard, UPenn, MIT, and others, this was a watershed moment. Give a listen.

Is Harvard a Critical Social Justice Madrassa? | Peter Boghossian & Rajiv Malhotra
In this conversation, Peter Boghossian and Rajiv Malhotra discuss anti-Semitism at Harvard and other Ivy League universities, Harvard’s cancellation of Hindu speakers, collaboration between leftist and Islamic radicals to undermine various civilizations they label “oppressive,” how China uses Harvard to undermine the U.S. and India, and much more.
Bestselling author Rajiv Malhotra is a physicist, computer scientist, and founder of Infinity Foundation, a Princeton-based non-profit specializing in civilization studies. His books include “The Power of Future Machines: Essays on Artificial Intelligence,” “Snakes in the Ganga” (with a forward by Peter Boghossian), and “Being Different: An Indian Challenge to Western Universalism.”

Safety First on Campus. Except for Jews.
That’s the approach taken by university administrators these days. On campuses across the country, “safety first” has birthed a whole new moral framework—one that treats rhetorical “microaggressions” as acts of violence.
It’s safety first when it comes to edgy Halloween costumes. It’s safety first when a professor writes an email in which she says, “Black Lives Matter but also, Everyone’s Life Matters.” And it’s safety first when a professor fails too many students in his class.
But when it comes to threats and calls for genocide against the Jews, it’s a different story. Not safety first, but anything goes.

We have established councils, university departments, and programs dedicated to the study of Islam and the Muslim world and to combat allegedly rampant "Islamophobia". But for all of this ---- how much do Americans really understand this religion which a quarter of the world practices?

Daniel Kahneman on Making Intelligent Decisions in a Chaotic World | Intelligence Squared
-----------------
Daniel Kahneman shot to fame in 2002 when he won the Nobel prize in economics for his work on the psychology of human judgment and decision-making. His first book, Thinking, Fast and Slow, was a worldwide bestseller and set out his revolutionary ideas about how human error and bias can be recognised and mitigated. Now Kahneman is back with an acclaimed follow-up, Noise: A Flaw in Human Judgment, in which he sets out how businesses and governments can make smarter, swifter and more accurate decisions in our increasingly frenetic world.

In May 2022 Kahneman came to the Intelligence Squared stage for a rare live event in the UK – his first since 2014 – alongside his co-author Olivier Sibony. Together they argued that the key to creating successful organisations lies in reducing ‘noise’, defined as unwanted variability in human judgment. They set out a strategy for how we can identify bias and human error in organisations and implement a noise reduction strategy to correct it. They also examined the rise of artificial intelligence and discussed what this will mean for the future of decision-making. Join Intelligence Squared for an evening of insight, understanding and a rare prescription for making coherent choices in a chaotic world.

Natural Rights at the Founding | Jud Campbell

Although no longer a part of our constitutional discourse, natural rights were central to American rights jurisprudence for well over a century. This talk will explore how the Founders thought about natural rights – where natural rights came from, what role they played in the constitutional design, and who got to define and enforce them – and why understanding that history remains relevant today.

Discussing American Democracy and a Fragile World Order with John M. Owen IV
------------------
Liberals believe that democracy is in trouble worldwide. In his book, the University of Virginia’s John M. Owen IV argues that liberalism has evolved in ways detrimental to its own survival. The way to ensure democracy’s survival in the United States is to reimagine liberalism as less about disruption and more about commitment and community. And to make the world safe from autocracy, America needs to counter moves by China and Russia.

Join AEI’s Colin Dueck for a conversation with Dr. Owen about Dr. Owen’s new book, The Ecology of Nations: American Democracy in a Fragile World Order (Yale University Press, 2023).
