Out There Podcast is EIGHT!
Out There - 2022 Year in Review
Turns out, we did a lot in 2022!
OMG OMG! We just won an international award!
The award is for Changing the World One Moment at a Time, and the episode that won is "America's Best Idea?" (which is all about how Americans could use national parks to learn our history and start righting the wrongs of the past).
A huge congrats to Sam Baker, who reported the story, and to everyone on the Out There team! I am SO proud of you all.
Lots to celebrate with this year's Public Media Journalists Association awards!!
- Out There took 2nd place for best narrative podcast (for our episode "The Ultimate Outdoorswoman")
- Our former intern @anmargaret.warner received 2nd place for best student-produced episode, for her story "Why Do We Stay?"
This is the first time we've received TWO awards from PMJA in one year. Congratulations all around!

It's easy to focus on shortcomings — to think about all the things you could have done better. But sometimes we need to take a moment to celebrate what we managed to accomplish, despite it all.
Here's a little look back at 2021, and a look forward to 2022.
Happy New Year!
On March 11, 2015, I made an excited post on Facebook. I was excited because Out There Podcast had been downloaded 300 times.
Six and a half years later, we have exceeded 2 million downloads. 🎉
What started as a one-woman show now has a vibrant team of talented individuals. We’ve collaborated with talented storytellers from across the globe; we’ve won multiple national awards; and we’ve worked hard to amplify voices that are often sidelined in outdoor media.
It’s not easy producing an independent podcast. I’m constantly overworked and overwhelmed, and we never have enough money. But sometimes it’s helpful to step back and look at what you’ve accomplished rather than dwelling on the obstacles.
Today, for International Podcast Day, I’d like to say thank you to everyone I’ve worked with and everyone who has listened to and supported the show. You are amazing, and you are the reason I’ve stuck with it this long! Thank you thank you thank you 🙏🏽
